The Evergreen State Fair in Monroe runs the last weekend in July. Much smaller than the Puyallup Western Washington Fair, it has all the same type of attractions at a much easier, more manageable size. You won't have a problem here fighting crowds or finding a bench to take a break. However, you will find the usual rides, exhibits, animals, food, etc. A large field adjacent to the fairgrounds offers ample parking at a price (about $8, I think). You can either walk across to the fairgrounds or take the free shuttle.

If you are in the mood for soup, you might want to try out this small, rustic soup house in the Ravenna/View Ridge neighborhood. Nana's offers about half a dozen different soups each day. If your unsure which to choose, ask for a sample. Actually, I haven't particularly cared for the soup I've tried. However, I had an excellent grilled veggie sandwich there. There are probably about half a dozen wooden tables for eating on-premises.

If you are looking for a party or wedding band, you can't go wrong with the Craig Lawrence Band. We hired them for our wedding, and they sounded sensational. They really helped make the party. They know how to read the crowd and mix songs to keep the dance floor packed. They also did a great job of incorporating our special requests and will learn new music to accomodate your special dances.

My mother brought my wedding bouquet here to have it freeze dried after the wedding. Apparently, many people also like to have funeral flowers freeze dried. Simone runs the business out of a workshop in her yard. When I went to pick up the bouquet, she seemed very knowledgable and informative. In order to freeze-dry the flowers, she has to disassemble the bouquet, process the flowers individually, and then reassemble the bouqet. I thought she did a skilled job of reassembling the bouquet. The problem was that the flowers that were in the bouquet were not a type and color that freeze-dry well. In fact, the orange calla lillies were now brown and the bouquet looked pretty depressing. I don't fault Simone for this, it's the nature of the flowers, I think. However, I think she probably should have mentioned to my mother the likelihood that the bouqet would not come out well. Still, she did not pressure me to purchase any of the special mounting displays, she gave me lots of information how to keep the bouquet bug free, and I took it home in a box.

Don't be put off by the name - which sounds like a place you might not want your neighbors to see you frequenting. This is actually a cleaners. It was recommended to me by the store where I bought my wedding dress for wedding dress cleaning and storage. The price seemed about the same as elsewhere (i.e., expensive), and everything went fine. It's hard to know, however, if the dress was cleaned well because when you have a dress cleaned and stored, you can't open it until your ready to use it again. Otherwise, you have to have it re-packaged.

I really believe that credit unions are, in general, a much better place to bank than commercial banks. In order to join the Washington State Employees Credit Union you must be a state employee or have a family member who is one. Once you are a member, it doesn't matter if you are no longer employed by the state. With the exception of their mortgage department, I have always been very happy to do my banking at WSECU. There are no fees for checking or savings accounts, interest is comparable to commercial banks, and members are shareholders in the business. I highly recommend it.

Auto Consultants NW is not actually an auto dealer, but more like an auto broker. They offer the service of finding the type of car you request at the price level you request. They work with both new and used car markets. I think one's experience would be very dependent upon the partiular sales person you work with. Unfortunately, the salesperson we worked with no longer works there. You make an appointment and tell the salesperson all of your requirements and your price range. You put down a deposit and sign a contract that states if they find you a car that meets your specifications, you will buy it. We purchased a car in very good condition, with a maintainence record and a newer model than expected for less than the listings I saw on the web for "For Sale By Owner" cars (and less than blue book value). My mechanic is very skeptical of these type of businesses, but both times I have bought a car through them, he can't find anything wrong with them (insist on having the car inspected by your mechanic before buying), and they both ran great.

Our assessment of Ben Bridge (downtown location) is that your experience with the store will be most dependent on the salesperson you happen to work with. We were lucky enough to get a great salesperson (I believe her name was Jennifer) who was very knowledgable, patient, helpful and not pushy at all. We had some problems getting the ring sized right, but she assured us that they would keep trying until it was right. I do have reservations about the skill of the person who sizes the ring, though. And the other salespeople we dealt with on subsequent visits to pick up the resized ring were not so good. If we had had one of them helping us initially, I don't think we would have been very confident about buying from Ben Bridge.
