Third Place is more than a bookstore, it's part of a large community gathering area in Lake Forest Park. A food court surrounds a variety of table types and sizes. You don't have to buy food to sit at the tables. Third Place puts on a whole calendar of events on the stage in this area, from author readings, to music groups, to magic shows.

The Bothell Library is part of the King County Library System. A medium-sized library, it carries a lot of newer books and provides lots of tables for studying or reading. The children's section is a bit smaller than many of the regional libraries' are. An especially nice feature is that each month, the staff puts out placards on the table that show the new covers of the most popular magazines. Open until 9:00 pm M-th and Sun.

Beware, if you're not of a certain age and a certain black-trenchcoat techno persuasion, you may initially feel a little out of it walking in the door of Minnie's, but really all are welcome. And they have some surpirsingly good food. Hamburgers, sandwiches, and breakfast anytime are the dominant specialties. But each of these has an upscale "twist" that makes it a little more special than the usual fare of its type.

The most important thing to know about Stella's is that it's open 24 hours. The restaurant resides next to the Metro Cinema, just off of NE 45th St. If it's late, and Denny's isn't your thing, you might want to check them out. Ostensibly Italian, but really offering a little bit of everything, you can get real food at any time of night.

Located in Columbia City, Fasica is a neighborhood joint that's been "found." Offering traditional Eithiopian dishes and combos, you eat with the injera bread, rather than utensils. The decor is a bit "divey," but the food is good (sometimes great), and the owners are very, very nice and accomodating. In fact, once we went to eat there in the late afternoon, not realizing that the restaurant closes between lunch and dinner. The owner happened to be coming by at the same time, and he insisted that we come in and eat, even though the restaurant is supposed to be closed at that time!

Located in Ravenna, on NE 65th, Bagel Oasis bakes their goods fresh on the premises. These are more traditional-style bagels with traditional flavors (think garlic, salt, egg, poppyseed, rather than sundried tomato feta). The bagels are a denser variety than you'll find in grocery stores and some other bagel places in Seattle. They are very filling. Sandwiches are also available and you can eat in or take out. However, the store isn't open in the evening.

Anthony's Pier 66 and The Bell Street Diner share a building, but they are actually two different restaurants with different menus. Anthony's is upstairs and the Bell Street Diner is downstairs (note: if you want to go to Anthony's, the hostess station is upstairs. The one just in the door is only for the Bell Street Diner). This review is on the Bell Street Diner. Don't be fooled by the name, this is definitely not a diner. It has the atmosphere of a casual "nice"-type restaurant, offering booths and tables inside, seasonal dining on the deck outside, and a long bar. The menu ranges from the less expensive fish and chips, hamburgers, etc. to a full, pricier seafood menu. It's great if you want to relax in a "nice" restaurant atmosphere without paying the price. I particularly love the ponzu salmon bowls - very generous portions of smoked salmon, jasmine rice, salad and a terrific sesame dressing (ask for extra on the side, it goes well with everything in the bowl).

Located near Roosevelt High School at 15th Ave NE and NE 65th, Rising Sun often has some great produce prices. It's worth passing by to see the deal of the day listed on the reader board. The "stand" (more like a half-inside, half-outside store) also sells seasonal items like pansies and pumpkins.
