The best source of Chinese Dim Sum in the OC inarguably comes from the Cerritos area. That's not practical if you live in South County. Irvine has a two excellent locations for Dim Sum, but if you want the real stuff, head over to China Garden on Jeffrey and Walnut. You may have to wait an hour or more if you arrive at peak times, but the wait is worth it. Carts filled with platefuls of dumplings and rolls zigzag between the customer-filled tables, and waiters carry trays right out of the kitchen to add to the mouth-watering mix. Unless you flag down the waiters and trays, you're likely to miss out on the goodies. The place is quite noisy; but that's in the spirit of celebration and Chinese good eats.

Japanese anime, books, and memorabilia isn't cheap, and you'll pay a pretty penny at some of the more well established outlets like Kinokuniya. Unless you hit the conventions or eBay, you won't be getting much of a bargain. That is, unless you're in Costa Mesa and stop at Book Off in the Marukai shopping center. Book Off's got a large selection of new and used j-pop, CDs, DVDs, literature, and lots of anime. One row is now dedicated to English language books, and while their selection is a bit eclectic, it's quite a bit cheaper than its competitor across the street. Book Off is open at 8:00 seven days a week, and if you're a big fan of all things Japanese, you'll want at least an hour to browse the collection.

I started coming to this restaurant after my husband introduced me to it, and now it's a regular lunch break stop for my work buddies. They have reasonably priced combination specials, awesome sushi, and a comfortable, courteous, and low-key atmosphere. Everything is so fresh and they really take care to make a masterpiece out of the presentation.

While they don't have the best ramen around, Ebisu does make up for it with atmosphere and chic. They specialize in a variety of ramen dishes. When you come during lunch, they have three lunch specials that start at $6.95. All of these combos come with a drink and salad. Combo A is accompanied by ramen in shoyu broth, fried rice, and two pieces of gyoza...enough so you get a sense of what Ebisu is all about. You don't leave feeling hungry. There is a children's menu, and other combinations, but it's the lunch to me that really hits the spot.

If you've never tried Shabu Shabu, then you'll want your first experience here. Once you sit down, your order is taken immediately, and you're given thinly sliced meat, veggies, noodles, a couple of cubes of tofu, and you're ready. Cook all these in a pot of boiling water, dip it in their sauces, and voilร ! California Shabu Shabu is the best in Orange County, better than the one at the Block in Orange. If you come during dinner, expect to wait. Lunchtime is less busy, and although you're getting smaller portions, you leave the restaurant very happy and very full!

Dr. Noda goes the extra step with each patient - always thorough, never one to cut corners. Patients can leave feeling they've been given a competent exam. His old-fashioned attention to detail and service alone warrants a perfect rating. However, his office also carries a nice selection of frames, and the staff is friendly and considerate also.

Plowboys is a small supermarket that packs a punch. They have a superb produce selection that is unmatched by any area markets. And the prices aren't that bad. There's also a separate fresh meats section. But that's about it. There are basic canned goods and dairy, but this market doesn't specialize in these items, and you'll probably get a better deal on these goods from a chain supermarket, but for meats and veggies, this is the place.

Svendsgaard's Lodge is a great place to stay for vacationers to Solvang. It's quiet, the rooms are well apportioned, and the rates quite reasonable compared to similar hotels in the area. The hotel lies closer to the eastern edge of the town, but guests still get a piece of the action here. Across the street lies Mission Santa Ynez ,and just a few yards away lies a bakery with the yummiest selection of pastries and Danish butter cookies. Outlet shops are kitty-corner from the hotel. The staff is generally friendly. With a pool, hot tub, and fireplaces in suites, there's plenty of space for budget-conscious families. Ample parking, with daily continental breakfasts. Make sure to get reservations early as space fills quickly.

This is a charming little amusement park for young children aged seven and under. The smaller scale amusement park rides give children a satisfying experience while allowing parents a more relaxed and less demanding pace than either Disneyland or Knott's Berry Farm can offer. Families can expect to spend a couple of hours here. The park has facilities for birthday parties. Tickets prices aren't prohibitive either. Parents may want to avoid the balloon ride that spins...it's nauseating.

If you're a film buff, this is the place for you. Book City carries everything for the Hollywood fan, from scripts and signed photos to cinematic histories on virtually everything. While the film and popular arts section is outstanding, I was pleasantly surprised to see that other sections were just as comprehensive. The one drawback to this great store is the pricing; it's way too high for the quality of some of the merchandise. The store also suffers from a lack of current titles. It's fun to look inside, but prohibitive in value to some.
