If you don't want to spend all that money to watch a movie on the big screen this is the place to go. You won't be watching any premiers but who needs to keep up with the Jones' (my apologies to anyone named Jones). It's even a better alternative than waiting for the dvd release since it is cheaper than a rental. Also, you support your local theater the later you watch a movie on the big screen. There is a certain time limit in which most of the proceeds go to the movie company itself then afterward proceeds will start going towards the local theater. Then all the money you save on the ticket can go to all the overpriced food items.

This museum can appeal to all curious minds. First, they have a "static" exhibit. Basically the stuff that will always be there. The exhibits are very interactive and hands on. There are many different components like weather, math and nature. There is one area like a mini zoo to see some animals/insects/reptiles in a simulated habitat. Then there is another area for rotating/visiting exhibits. Outside is a playground which sports different musical implements that agree very loud but fun. As you walk further, there are farm animals like donkey, sheep, turkey, pigs, etc. It's nice but smelly at times. Then as you go further there is the area where you can take a train ride for a nominal fee. I didn't find it that exciting but the kids get a big kick out of it. There is also a cafe which I have not gone to yet. Then there is my favorite, the Butterfly house. Besides it housing a tropical climate where birds, butterflies and moths are there is a nice gift shop and also a display area with many different creepy creatures. It's the closest you'll ever want to get to one of those creatures. There are a lot of educational components to the exhibits. You can also have a birthday party there. My son has attended two and he has enjoyed them both.
I would have given them 4 stars if some of the exhibits were working. The kids play hard so I can imagine maintenance can be a nightmare.

My family and I have been trying to make it to downtown Raleigh on the first Friday of the month. This is when they have the ArtSpace open late, etc. Anyway, we ate our dinner at Vic's. It is a very charming restaurant with pretty murals on the wall. We ordered a cheese pizza (good), Caeser salad (great, my son who never eats salads ate it), fried calamari appetizer (good) and a pasta dish. I can't remember the name but it is on the bottom. (I believe it iis the same as the other poster). That was very delicious. My daughter dropped her pizza and began devouring the pasta instead! The wait help was great also. Everyone was very nice. It had a very nice homey atmosphere and it was great seeing the different patrons...families iwth small kids to couples on a date. Everyone seemed to be enjoying their warm food and warm company. I'd definitely go there again and try other dishes.
As for parking, if you do go during that first Friday night, there is a parking garage 1 block away from City Market across from the Exploris Museum for free. I'm not sure if it is the same during all evenings though.

The Pineapple Tea Room is a cute little place in historic downtown Apex. When you first enter you are greeted with a very large array of tea accessories, cute little knick knacks, and pineapple things. In the back is where you can have a cup of tea and treats. I had their scones with a peach white tea. Those scones were the best I have ever had. To get you more in the "high tea" mood are lady hats and fur stoles. If you want to have a bigger snack like a sandwich, they offer that if you schedule ahead. You also have a very wide variety of teas to choose from. The ladies there are helpful if you don't know where to start. You'll find great tea items/accessories for those who love tea.

The zoo is always a great idea for the family. We went on an overcast and cool day so the place wasn't crowded...which I liked. We got there late morning so many of the animals were in places we couldn't always see.
The zoo is sectioned off in regions. One end is Africa and the other is North America. You can park at either end and walk or take a tram to the opposite end. I believe it is about a 7 mile walk from one end to the other. From both sides it is an uphill walk so be prepared. They have booths at certain major exhibits that are for educational purposes.
The exhibits are very nice and they try to make it as natural as possible. The way the exhibits are actually allows you to be safely up close to the animals if they came near. They'll have special exhibits throughout the year also.
Gift shops are actually pretty nice and offer many different price points. Food is mediocre. I would recommend bringing your own picnic. Sometimes the restaurants or food places are closed too. They have single and double stroller rentals. Check out their website for the different events they hold and for info.

The Durham Bulls Athletic Park is just an all around great place. We get the mini plans each year for a great price. They also try to make the program better each year with different promotions. They have a policy that allows you to reuse unused tickets during the season. On many Friday nights, they have fireworks too.
There actually is a wide variety of foods to choose from besides the ever so popular hot dogs and beer. They have snow cones, pizza, Goodberry's, mexican, pretzels, bbq, fried chicken, nuts, etc. On some Thursday games, they have family feast night where certain food items are only $1.
The games are fun to watch but even better is the whole atmosphere. The stadium is not so big that it is overwhelming and it is small enough to make you feel like you're a part of the whole thing. Plus, if you get seats in the upper sections which is smart for those rainy days, it is not that far up...for those lazy folks! It's great for the family. Kids 5 and under go free too. Very affordable, you can save the money to buy food. There is also a little playground for kids besides other things for the kids. Wool E. Bull and Lucky the wonder dog are also favorites for children and adults.
Tickets are great for gifts and the whole area around there is developing very nicely with the tobacco warehouses.

I had my first 2 kids at the Durham Women's Clinic. I have always used the midwives there although you do see the doctors too in your prenatal visits. I believe they have significantly cut down on the midwifery services though. Both pregnancies/births had some kind of complication and the doctors and midwives were all very great. My kids are healthy and perfect! The staff is very personable. Their onsite phlebotemist/med tech. is the best. If you are afraid of needles, she is the one to go to. I never feel like anything is happening to me when she draws blood. You can tell the doctors genuinely care...they seem like uncles and aunts to me. My 2 complaints are 1. sometimes I have to wait a long time to be seen as they are busy and 2. sometimes some of the nurses seem grumpy (they're usually very nice) but they are more human to me that way. When we move back to Durham, they will definitely be my OB/GYN again. I would recommend them highly.

Grand Asia Market is a great place to find Asian and other "foreign" ingredients. It has items that I can't find at other asian markets so it makes more sense to just go there in a one stop shopping. They have a seafood department with fresh fish on ice and also live tilapia and catfish. Their live crabs are huge and very tasty. They also have cuts of meat you can't get at a regular grocery store. The meat prices are pretty good too. They have fresh noodles in the refrigerated section that are really good. If you want ramen, Sapporo Ichiban, is the best brand to buy. It is the most popular in Hawaii and people eat the hard noodles raw too. They're like tasty crackers. They also have a bakery with great cakes and tapioca drinks. They have an area where you can buy their freshly made tofu besides eating lunch there too. There are areas to buy chinese herbs and some odds and end furniture (not huge items) but some sizable. It is a great place to experience. I'd suggest looking for a tasty looking asian recipe online then make it a field trip to Grand Asia Market to find the ingredients.

I actually like the seemingly disorganized space they call Fisher Hawaii. They definitely have affordable prices and tons of them. I've always found the supplies I've needed there and they usually have a good array of choices. If your item you're looking for is something that isn't so common, your choices may not be that big though. Like the other posters, some items are old and have been there for awhile so you have to be careful what you pick up. Some things can be faded or very dusty. But the whole experience is actually fun too. They always have tons of specials and unusual items. It's like treasure hunting. The staff there are really nice and helpful too. Parking is limited but you can usually find one. I really like their selection of pens and mechanical pencils. I have one that I could not find anywhere else...wish I didn't lose it since I'm not in Hawaii anymore.

I love Dr. Herman. I had a little mutt that everyone called a big rat and I used to take him to one of those "chain" veterinarians. Those vets suggested my dog go through another surgery...he had some kind of infection in his mouth. He already had one and lost most of his teeth. A friend recommended Dr. Herman and when I took my dog there, I saw him do something I never saw him do anything else...be excited to go to the vet. He'd run ahead of me to the door. Inside, he was never very nervous with Dr. Herman or his staff. Dr. Herman treated him with antibiotics. I saved tons of money plus the agony of waiting through a surgery. When my dog had to be put down when I was 26 years old (I had him since I was 9 yrs old) his staff was very compassionate and his wife sat with me to try to comfort me. I have since then recommended many others to him and they all have appreciated his service.
