My first visit to Pluto's on Scott was terrific! While at first glance, the menu might appear limited for this walk-along-the-food-stations-to-pick-up-your-food restaurant; however, that proved wrong when I realized I had many choices to vary the selections. For example, in ordering a Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad, I was given the option of adding 7 toppings of other vegetables and cheeses. Wow! The sandwiches looked terrific, and I almost regretted my choice when I arrived at the meat grill and vegetable station. Oh, my! The brussel sprouts looked gorgeous, and the grilled sweet potatoe mixture appeared really appetizing! Dying to go back again for lunch!

I've always found the library staff very pleasant at this branch. They serve such a diverse clientele and speak English, Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin, Chaozhou, Taishan, and Taiwanese), Russian, Vietnamese. To meet the needs of this community, this branch provides a wide variety of foreign language books, magazines, videos and even some DVDs. So if you want to brush up on your high school Russian, this is the place! While they only have 4 internet-enabled computers (with 3 for reservation), I have rarely found it difficult to get time on a PC. Also, either on staff or a volunteer (not sure), Joseph goes out of his way to assist you with kindness and attention. Good community library branch.

The "Press" is an extremely successful Catholic publishing company, but it is run on a warm and friendly scale by all involved. Located in a small San Francisco neighborhood, they publish not only books but videos, magazines, audio cassettes, and compact discs. I find the quality of the publications is high and the selection is extensive! What makes it unique, however, is the spirit of all the employees. They are Spirit-filled and caring in their dealings with the public and each other. Plus...most of them, I think, have met the Pope!! A great source for religious materials of all kinds! http://www.ignatius.com/index.aspx?SID=1&

The UCSF (Univ of CA San Francisco) University Store (formerly Bookstore) in Millberry Student Union has an extensive collection of medical books and study aids, of course to assist the students, but also lots of material of interest to the public. I've found great home health books just right for keeping me on track. Quite a selection of UCSF clothes, typical for college types, but also Third Street Kids Scrub Set so you can put that little aspiring 5-year-old doctor in the proper attire!!
Other notable services they provide are: 1) if you bring in an old mercury thermometer, they will exchange it for a new digital thermometer as part of a mercury products recycling program. What a good thing! I've taken in my elderly neighbors' old ones and returned new high tech ones into their hands; 2) recycling of
used batteries and toner cartridges.
Good stuff for our minds and the environment!

This Talbots Petites always has a wonderful collection of clothing. I especially like their dress slacks that are machine washable. I've bought the side-zip in nearly every color, and they are my staples while traveling. The staff is very friendly and helpful and never snooty, which can be the case for some of the other shops on El Paseo. You can really create a Talbots wardrobe from this store.
Lovely clothes and accessories; friendly staff

I really like Fancy Nails salon. It's so conveniently located near the popular Washington St/42nd St intersection and right behind A&W and Rite-Aid. The Vietnamese staff are friendly, skilled and welcome you with smiles. The staff cleans each pedicure spa after use, and the tools are popped into the sterilizer also. I love the great designs (flags, flowers, etc.) they do for the holidays on hands or feet. Reasonable prices.
Smiling staff; extensive nail designs; clean

The Palm Desert Public Library is an oasis in the desert! They have a good magazine collection, well-stocked new book section and lovely children's section. The extensive audiobook, video and DVD collections are wonderful for this small library. Since the distances are so great in the Coachella Valley, it is wonderful to have a book-on-tape or CD to while away the drive! They also have an innovative "free to take" area near the entrance, where you can drop off magazines/newsletters/Readers Digest books that you are finished reading. I love this! Also, the wait to use a computer (8-10?) is relatively short and signup (though low-tech handwritten sheet) is easy. The reference librarians are always helpful and friendly. Nice small-town feel to this library.
Pros: Good collection books on tape or CD; "free to take" zone
Cons: Sometimes grumpy front desk staff (overwhelmed?)

This well-designed store presents a terrific variety of products and specially-produced foods for the diabetic or those following a low-carb "way of life." The low-carb muffins are to die for, and they have a wonderful collection of Walden Farms salad dressings and sauces which I appreciate, since I love the Balsamic! They have great fresh baked breads and a candy collection for the sweet tooth. One of their best marketing tools is their tasting table, where you actually can sample a large variety of products you are unfamiliar with. I found some of my most favorite foods this way! The staff is friendly and helpful, and it is great fun just chatting with them about all the products.
Pros: Taste testing of products; friendly, helpful staff
Cons: I only get in to the store when I visit my folks!

Cornerstone is a wonderful church community. From their high-energy music-filled services and their specialized religious classes to the well-stocked bookstore, Cornerstone Cafe and community ministry programs, this church combines religious commitment with enthusiasm and caring. I do feel it is more suited to the very young...as the majority of the attendees appear to be in their early 20s and the music during the service is of such high (overwhelming) volume that middle-aged and older individuals may be uncomfortable. I left with a headache every single time I attended services (4-5 times) because of the loud music...and I wore earplugs during songs 3 of the 5 times! I value my hearing for work and personally and just couldn't risk continuing there. But what a great environment should they tone down the tunes.
Pros: Committed and caring pastor and staff; great programs; high-energy
Cons: Service music way too loud! Crushing to the eardrums!

I recently learned about the American Center for Law & Justice (ACLJ) and am so grateful for their support in legal matters concerning religious rights in America today and for providing education in this and other constitutional liberties areas. Their Legal Helpline (1-757-226-2489) is wonderful when I have a question about public schools and my rights. Even though I've never been able to get in, the call-in radio program (1-800-684-3110 from 12-12:30 PM EST/EDT) is informational and very helpful. I appreciate being able to use the petition call-in number (1-877-989-2255) to make my opinion known to my representatives in Washington. A great legal service.
Brilliant legal analysis; devoted staff; fights for underdog!
