...is having the Brick Store as your neighborhood pub. Yes, the beer selection is fantastic. Let's not slight that. How wonderful is it to walk into a pub and have over a dozen beers on tap -- and none of them of the Bud or Coors variety? Brick Store gets beers that few else in Atlanta can serve, and they are served in the correct glasses. (There's also an enormous selection of bottled beer, but that's not my own preference.)
Then there's the food. No, it's not gourmet. But it's much better than the usal pub food, and it's consistently prepared well. Fish and chips; burgers; sandwiches, a couple of salads. That's what you get here -- and that's all you get. But you know what you are getting -- and you'll enjoy it.
But what I appreciate most about the Brick Store is the staff. You would think this group of indie-twenty-somethings would sneer at the parents and kids, the old and the not-so-hip who come in. But no. They are, quite simply, one of most accommodating waitstaff around. (Including the staff at places that are supposed to be family friendly.) I've been going to the Brick Store for years, and this has been true the whole time. My hat's off to the person who hires them.
Being at the Brick Store will make you want to live in Decatur, if only so you can walk home after having one pint too many.

This is an unpretentious corner restaurant that, as another reviewer says, will save you a trip to Buford Highway. The pho and the grilled pork are my favorites, but I don't think you can go wrong with any of the soups or soup bowls. The family who runs the restaurant are friendly and eager to please, and they will modify their dishes to taste without a lot of hassle. You won't find as many surprises here as you might elsewhere, but you never leave disappointed.

Java Monkey is that independent coffee house that we are always complaining we can't find. The atmosphere is quite mellow -- not so in-your-face hip that yuppie moms and dads (or moms and moms, being Decatur) can't sit down next to the Kant-reading-grad-students. There's both an outside patio, and a shut-in one that is shaded in the summer and heated by a fire in the winter. The coffee is terrific -- and unformly so -- especially the blends that JM makes themselves. And while the sandwiches are a little steeply priced, they are also delicious. You get a sense that you belong to a community here, and that you are investing in the community by choosing to spend your money here. Since I've become one of the stroller set, I no longer get to stay at night, when the place becomes the site of performances and the wine bar opens up. But I'll be back as soon as I can.

This would be a perfectly fine taco joint if it weren't for the crowd. The tacos that everyone raves about are really quite... fine. Nothing special, and certainly nothing that you couldn't get for a dollar from a corner cart of a southwestern city. The chips are serviceable, but nothing to rave about; the margaritas are syrupy; and the salsas are average. I wouldn't dissuade anyone from eating the food there, but I think that the popularity of this restaurant has to be a sign of one of two things: Either Atlantans have incredibly uninformed palates when it comes to Mexican food. Or they like to follow the crowds -- to have their eating choice validated by masses of other people. And I think the latter explanation is right. (Atlantans have enough dining options to know better than this food is really terrific.) People come and stand in line for these tacos because other people are standing in line for them. If you need to feel like you are part of the crowd, then this place is for you. For those with a little more independence, you'll find equal (or maybe even better) fare elsewhere.

I can never understand why more people don't eat at Noodle. The rice and noodle bowls substantial, and consistently spiced. The vegetables are quite fresh. For seven to nine dollars an entree, you can't ask for too much more. There's a decent beverage selection, and the staff is friendly and helpful. Moreover, the restaurant has both inside and outside dining spaces so that you can almost always find a table. In fact, the restaurant is usually half-empty even on weekend nights. Which brings me back to the question of why more people don't eat here. Perhaps it's not as trendy as some of the other names on the street, but the food is actually as good, if not better.
