Our son was having his first portrait day at school. Bad thing was, his hair was awful....it was getting longish and shaggy. Definitely not what I wanted for his school portrait.
Being as we were busy running other errands, we had gone into this one strip mall. And that turned out to be a blessing.
We found this little, out of the way barber shop that offered hairstyles for $7. I was a bit hesitant...that seemed to cheap to be any good, but we thought we would take the chance.
So we walked in, the place was virtually empty. There were three barbers, only one of which was working on someone.
They were all very nice and friendly, and they had our son sit up in a booster seat on the big barber chair. He did everything the barber told him to do, how to hold his head etc.
I couldnt believe how much hair they took off his head! But he looked awesome! Best haircut he had ever gotten. The barber he had was faster than any I had seen before!
The barber was very friendly, courteous, and really knew what he was doing.
Everyone has been complimenting him...cant wait to see the portraits!

Our son was turning 5, and our car club wanted to have a party for him...we thought we had everything, but upon closer inspection, we knew we didnt have nearly enough of the themed items for his party...
We didnt have much time, or much money, but this was a special bday so we made a mad dash for Party City.
We were out doing shopping for various other things, and we happened to be in El Cajon at the time, so we decided to drop in to the Party City there. I usually dont like going there, because it tends to be crowded, very picked over, and rarely has what I need. This time Party City was exceptional.
We found everything we were still missing, including confetti, various sized paper plates and napkins with the theme we were having. Also tons of party favours in the same theme...that made it all the more special! Everything to give our party that extra special touch!

This past month has been real busy for us. Our son's birthday, our "back to the 70's party", our son starting school, etc.
There were many things we needed, but didn't know where to go. Thank God, Halloween is right around the corner, or we really would have had a problem...our 70's party was having a skit of the blues brothers, well, thats easy for adults to do, but what about a 4 year old? How would you dress up a 4 year old to look like a blues brother? Well, you need to head to Party City!
They had everything we needed. A complete Blues Brothers kit (hat, tie, sunglasses with attached sideburns, harmonica, etc.). And his daddy found all he needed to dress up as well...the hat, sunglasses etc.
And we found all the party supplies for our son's bday too...it was going to be a "Cars" themed party...we found everything there...
We had been looking around for a lunch box for our son, and just couldnt find anything that we really liked...the very last place I would look for one would be at a place like Party City, but they had them...any kind of design you could think of...so it made it hard to choose...the best thing of all, is that yes they had the design we wanted, and it was even cheaper than anywhere else we had looked!
You can bet, Party City will top our list of places to go when we need to find something a little off the beaten track!

I have to admit, Ive tried several places, and several types of margaritas, but to be honest, the place that makes the best margaritas is .....Applebees! They make an outstanding top shelf margarita, they also make the best Peach margaritas. They have loads of different kinds, and always add more...better than any bar I have been in, and better than any Mexican restaurant. The drinks are smooth, not too sweet, not too sour. They do pack a nice punch tho! They make both regular and frozen/blended...the frozen/blended ones are the best. And if you are in the mood for a real treat...try their frozen mudslides....to die for!

We moved into this apartment complex nearly two years ago. The surrounding area is beautiful, the people are friendly. And the prices werent that bad...but now that I've been here a while, I can see the move was a bad one.
The apartment is cockroach infested. When we first moved in, we made a list of things that needed fixing...it took them nearly a year, and several complaints, before they ever came to fix any of it. The maintenance people are idiots. They have to come back two or three times before they can fix something properly.
The paint they used in this place sucks, it peels, leaving big ugly splotches on the walls, and they didnt even paint the entire apartment before we moved in.
You cant use the jacuzzi, because kids (and adults) fill it up with bubble bath. Can rarely use the pool itself because the older kids and adults are not careful about the smaller children and they get very rough with their poolside activities. Not to mention the drunk adults that always hang out around the pool, etc.
Plus, there is a known registered child molester in the complex...this was brought to managements attention, and they did nothing at all.
There is a so called "dog run" at these apartments, which is small, it is poorly maintained (when its maintained at all). A tenant, that is tired of all the other dogs messing in there and the owners that dont clean up after their dogs, goes in there like once a week to clean it, because it is so nasty. And it is just as bad a few hours later. THe management will do nothing about it, saying its not their responsibility to maintain it.
Drug use and public drinking run rampant in the dog run area. On more than one occasion, when we took our dog down to the dog run late at night, we would find glass drug vials, etc lying in the dog run, bottles and cans everywhere, etc.
Its hard to get the police to do anything because the management wont do anything about it. And this is such a small town, we dont have our own police or fire departments...we share another cities departments, so it takes longer for them to get here when they are called.
There is no onsite managment. Complaints are filed and pretty much ignored.
And with all these problems...they still think its ok to raise the rent every 6 months.
So all in all, not a very nice place to live.

Until this year, I really paid no attention to the grade schools in California. My little boy started Kindergarten 3 weeks ago, at Lindo Park School.
I have to admit, this school is a lot different than any other school I have had any dealings with, at any grade level.
Never before have I met such a great group of teachers, teachers that truly do care about their students. Ones that take the time to get to know the students and their parents.
The Principal of this school, Ms. Ginger Van Zant, is wonderful! She's eager to get to meet the parents, students, etc. She shows a true interest in the children and families attending classes at her school. She's always looking for ways to make the school better, and making the school safer and more enjoyable for the students there.
The school is well maintained, quite safe, peaceful, and well run.
It is mainly run on common sense, not a lot of over the top rules as so many other schools are.
My son is having the time of his life at this school. He adores his teacher, Ms. Nicki Lustig, and he adores Ms. VanZant.
This school also thoroughly enjoys and welcomes parent volunteers, which I plan to do very shortly. And the PTA is wonderful. I can remember no one wanting to be a pta member back when I was in school because all they did was ask for money and never did anything for the school or its students...but this PTA is different. And I can happily say that my fiance and I are proud members of this schools PTA!

This past weekend, 9/16/2006, proved to have the perfect weather for a Chili Cook Off in Lakeside, CA. The cookoff was to benefit the renovation of the Lakeside VFW/AMVETS hall. The building is old, and needs to be brought up to code or it will have to be brought down.
Approximately 10 different groups showed up for this charitable event. We all had a blast! Great chili, some better than others. A lot of friendly ribbing between the groups. Including some friendly ballot box stuffing and a little bribing of the judges, but no real complaints. It was all in fun.
There was a great turn out, had a blow up hulk bounce around booth for the kids and had some great raffle prizes. This was also to benefit the El Capitan High School band, being as they were having a bake sale as well.
I didnt win a prize, but I did get rave reviews and lots of repeat customers for my chili!

My family lives on a shoestring budget...it's never easy to make ends meet. We have to cut corners every way we can...and that isnt always easy, especially since I love to cook and bake, and I love to prepare healthy foods for my family.
Shopping at major chains is out of the question, they are just too expensive.
I can feed my family of four for less than $100 per month, just by pinching my pennies and shopping at our 99cents only stores. We have at least 3 of these stores to choose from in our surrounding communities...the prices are awesome, nothing is ever over 99cents, and many items are two or three for 99cents. I get all my canned foods there, most of my fresh produce is gotten there. I even get some meats there.
And they have items that the major chains dont carry...like clothes, and yes, Im not ashamed to admit I get some of my son's clothes there and he absolutely loves them! They have a great selection of toys, bath products, kitchen products, gift ideas, holiday ideas, makeup, etc...its not just food!
These are like your old time mercantile stores used to be like, but money goes a lot further at these stores than it did in the old days!
I dont know how I ever managed to survive before I found out about these stores.

I live in a real small rural town, in San Diego county, there isnt much going on around here. This town is so small we dont even have our own police or fire department. The only major stores we have around here, are Vons and Albertsons (and the various famous fast food chains). Its mainly a lot of mom and pop shops, etc.
We just had a great little market open up right down the street from us. Its called Harvest Farms Market. Its very small, in comparison to all the chain markets, but they have weekly sales. And their every day prices are very comparable to the chain stores...most of the time even cheaper!
They have great deals on meat of all kinds, great produce, friendly knowledgeable staff. They even have an in store "restaurant" that has some pretty decent food at good prices.
This place has just replaced most of the other stores I used to shop at...why go to another town to get one or two items, when its all right here?!!
We had a chili cookoff this past weekend, and I found every thing I needed right here in this store, and I paid a lot less than the major chains, and I didnt have to waste gas travelling to another town to get everything.

What can I say? Walmart is always a great place to shop...well usually. Normally I get great service, great prices, well stocked shelves, etc.
Well I was in the market for a cook top/camp site stove. Preferably with two burners. One that wouldn't break my bank, or my back.
This was kind of a last minute deal...we were having a charity chili cookoff, and i needed a cook stove and fast, one that would accomodate two large stock pots, and I had a real set budget of how much I could afford.
I had looked all over Lakeside and El Cajon, without much success. Everywhere I went, it was way out of my price range, and all looked too small to accomodate what I needed.
So, since I had to do some other shopping, I was going to be near the Walmart in Santee, the only Walmart I rarely go to since it hardly ever has the things I need.
This time I lucked out. It had the perfect cook stove, small, compact, great price, easy to find, big enough for exactly what i needed! I guess maybe I better come back to this store a little more often!
