Barbara's bookstore is a great place to scope out hot guys and check out really cool authors. They constantly have events going on where you can meet up-and-coming authors. I met Gregory Maguire and he signed all my books. They also have comfortable chairs and internet connections. However, the only downside is that they don't have many books for a bookstore. If you are looking for a specific book or edition, you probably won't be able to find it there. Call ahead if you're looking for a book since chances are, they won't have it. Great place to hang out in though...

I hate this place. They charge you twice as much as UPS for shipping and try to rip you off any way possible in printing or copying. I had to print 1 sheet of paper once and they charged me $5 for using the computer for like 2 seconds to print it and then they charged me for the paper and the printing. It is ridiculous but there aren't that many options here if you don't drive. I suggest everyone to just buy a good inkjet that takes $2 inks from the internet and avoid Postnet at all costs.

Japonica pushes the envelope with their radical creations in the sushi industry. Though not on the menu, their chef makes his own excellent sushi combinations that are just divine. We had a grilled pork sushi with avocado and a tinge of tabasco sauce that was just mind-numbingly brilliant. I'll admit that since they're new, their menu is a little sparse and parking is rare on taylor but if you manage to park your car, Japonica is completely worth it. The owner, Darren is very attentive adn this place is definitely worth checking out!

Kohan is one of the first (and probably many) sushi places on Halsted to go to. Their pre-made sushi available at the UIC convenience store is mediocre, which was why I doubted whether this place was good or not. I was blown away by this place. Despite the small size and the subtle decor, the food was impeccable- something comparable to higher end and "trendier" restaurants on the north side. I had the salmon tartar and the presentation was just so beautiful (it came in a martini glass with flowers and leaves). The fish was very fresh. My friend had Salmon Teriyaki and the portions were huge. It does get a little expensive but they offer student discounts during lunch and it is completely worth it.

I love house of sushi and noodles. The owner is so nice and the place just has a very homely, kitschy feel. The sushi is ample and the prices are cheap - less than $20 for all you can eat sushi- which is unfounded in Chicago. Though they've instigated strict strict rules for their buffet, the essence of sushi freedom is still there. The owner sometimes goes around taking your picture and its fun to see your picture on their sushi wall every so often. Customer service is superb. When we were waiting for a table, the owner gave us (and everyone else) free edamame (green beans) which were divine. I LOVE this place.

Jamba Juice is hot. No, really. Its totally awesomeonly hot. Its a great place to go to all year round. Some of the drinks are realyl gross but once you find the one you like, its almost magic. My favorite is the Orange Dream Machine. But the teas are very good as well as the wheatgrass (if wheatgrass could be good). Seating is ample but parking is at a premium. NIce place ot hang out during the summer.

Charles Ifergan has to be one of the most high end- yet affordable salons in Chicago. On par with Mario Tricoci and Vidal Sassoon, its work is amazing. But they offer tons of discounts and coupon specials. For my birthday, they sent $25 haircut coupons which were just very thoughtful. Their staff is amazing and their products are very nice. Its great place to go to prom or just to get pampered. It is a little hidden upstairs between 2 boutiques but once you find it, its great.

Hash Browns has got to be one of the greatest restaurants on Taylor Street right now- and the least expensive. We went there this morning to encounter some pretty different food- pork chop and sausage omelettes which turned out to be really good. Just FYI though, their hash browns aren't really hash browns. They're really more like carrots and their portions aren't as big as I would've liked. Also, they don't take credit card so be armed with cash when you go in. But a great place to go to overall...

I love the planetarium and all its exhibits. Its a really fun place for kids because there is a lot of exhibits and cool shows. I was there once ofr something called Sonic Vision where you stare at the ceiling while images and music project and the experience was just amazing. Its a beautiful place overall and I think one of the most underrated in Chicago.
My favorite time to go though, is when the Planetarium is closed, around midnight or so. We park on the street keeping an eye out for cops. But right next to the planetarium, a little above the lake is the perfect view of Navy Pier, the lake and the Chicago skyline.

As much as I loved Rave during my teen years, my clothes didn't even last those years. It may be cheap but the quality is absolutely terrible. The design on the shirts come off on the 1st wash and the fabric is made of a cheap synthetic material. I bought a coat there once and it was not warm at all because the fabric was so bad. The shirts snare and the threads start unraveling really fast. Though, for $3 a shirt, I don't know if anyone really cares.
