I have to write about the Hable Construction girls. In my opinion, they're both the best thing since french toast, Paris in the summer, and jeans that make your butt look good. I'm not exactly sure how they moved to NYC and became these amazing textile artists, but they did it and not only do they rock when it comes to textile design, but they rock it out so we can all take part in purchasing. They design bags, pillows (wool felt applique, linen, jacquards, canvas) throws, fabric by the yard, stretched canvases...
You can shop them online at http://www.hableconstruction.com or visit their brick and mortar location in NYC. Great store, expensive, but if you can afford a $200 pillow you will have entered heaven's gate because the store is stocked with gorgeous felted and linen pillows that seem to have dropped from some candy-covered planet of all things amazingly cute. You can pick up good buys for under $100, like some of their totes and sale items, along with excellent garden glovers in perky patterns and really fun little hable goodies that will keep your apartment fresh and trendy.
The best part, they refresh their line each Spring and Fall, so there's always new goodies that you can save up for. My next purchase will be a Hable felt pillow. I'm just not sure which one to select, they must have 50+ cute styles. If you want to learn more about Hable Construction, or view my latest obsession in felt, visit their store.
By the way, I am quite serious when I say that I have to save for a mere pillow, but after you see them, you may understand why they're must-haves and worth every tall latte mocha you have to sacrifice to own one.

Did you watch Will & Grace the other night? It was a re-run so you may recall. At Karen's wacky birthday party, Will fussed over how much he loves to pickle food yet no one appreciates all the work he suffers to do it (a guest spit his pickled shrimp out behind the fireplace screen, ut oh). He mentioned having to locate a barrel for the pickling process, and how amazingly hard it is to buy a barrel these days. Along these lines, he then added, "I'd go to Crate & Barrel to buy a barrel, but of course, they don't carry those, and they certainly don't carry crates either. Remind me to tell them the next time they decide to open a store, they should just name it ottomans + wicker crap!". It was quite funny, especially since he is such a drama queen. But, the whole thing got me thinking, why would you name a store after items you don't even sell? Maybe because everything comes from China in either a crate or a barrel, perhaps?
Then, enter The Container Store. They actually sell containers (who'd have thunk it?) of all shapes and sizes, colors and errr....languages! Check out a fresh buy that I spotted in the store called, "Translations" , a bright wastebasket covered with genuine Japanese newspapers - each one is truly one-of-a-kind. How's that for eco-conscious shopping. For $24.99, can you pass it by? There's also a magnet board, to boot. Wait, do you hear that? A song coming on... "I think I'm turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese, I really think so!"
The Container Store seems to stock every possible container that you'll ever need in life, outside of a casket. The store is amazingly well laid out and just fun on a bun! Heck, I bet they even have crates and barrels for our poor friend, Will. Gosh, he was in such a pickle.

Have you visited Urban Mercantile lately? Located in the city of cable cars and Alcatraz, this San Francisco based store offers the rest of us e-commerce so we can shop online. Their website is a sublime haven for shoppers craving refined modern household goods. Sumptuous linens, ceramics and glass are just a few of their offerings. I like the the graphic pillow in muted tones of taupe and powder blue on muslin, silk screen printed by the hands of Kevin Harris. Did you see the Keokeo (Hawaiian term for muslin) glass vases and bowls? They are hand-crafted by Daniel Wooddell. The pomegranate ceramics created by Whitney Smith are another favorite. Artist Lina Felicia renders enticing graphics in brown and white on these hand silk screened toss pillows. Visit them live at 85 Carl Street or online at http://www.urbanmercantile.com/

Virgin Megastore (the old Tower Records to the locals) is a great store - with 3 floors of music and excellent live performances in their cafe on the 3rd floor on the weekends from local Berklee students and others in the area. The techno/house section is my favorite on the 2nd floor in the left corner behind the escalators, great assortment and when you catch a sale, the prices are great. I also love the international selection on the 3rd floor, although I wish they stocked more Italian, Turkish and French pop music, I was still happy to see some of my favorites like Thailia, Nek, Laura Pausini, Paris Combo, etc. Virgin has a lot of DVDs, some gifts and a light assortment of books, although their book section isn't arranged or stocked too well. Over all, I'm really happy with the store and love the listening stations - great!
(edited 12/20: this store closed to be replaced by best buy. so sad)

With aisles of foods from Europe, a quaint deli, loads of fresh fruit and flowers and chocolates from Germany, I love shopping at DeLuca's on Charles Street in Boston. It's so European, I felt like I was back in time... The prices are also good for city shopping and it's in a great location. Don't miss their kinder eggs in from Germany - crack the chocolate shell for a toy surprise inside - they're near the cash register!

With home accessories and stationery from floor to ceiling, Black Ink is a haven for those of us that love to linger over beautiful little things. With two Boston area locations (Beacon Hill Boston and Harvard Square Cambridge), and a sister store, MUT in Cambridge, Black Ink delivers products dripping with sweetness, satisfaction wrapped in bright candy colors on every shelf. We loved their books, like my favorite, Japan Houses mixed in with yummy cards from egg press and snow + graham. If you're ever in Boston you can add this shop to your 'must shop' list.

I've long been a fan of designer Kerry Cassill textiles. Her collection, easily spotted by the paisley symbol used on the tags on all of her work, has a strong Indian influence that is simply stunning. Her collection developed with this theme in mind due to an inspirational trip to Paris, where she spotted Indian fabrics and fell head over heels with their rich colors and patterns. She then ventured to India to learn more, and this is when her career in textile design took flight. Today, she is a popular designer with a huge following of fans that adore her patterns, like myself.
You can view her designs online or visit her store, lala, located in beautiful Laguna Beach, CA. While in Laguna, make sure you reserve time to stroll around to browse all the stores around lala, break for lunch, and don't miss the postcard perfect ocean views.

You know what they say, when daddy says no, head straight to moma. Okay, so you're an adult now. Let's translate that to the here and now. In this case, daddy is your husband telling you how you can't afford that new Chloe shirt, and moma is the perfect retail therapy fix for pouting females (also a great place to buy husband a sweet gift which may change his mind about the chloe shirt).
The MoMa store (Museum of Modern Art) is located online, via catalog, and in 3 NYC locations. MoMa carries items for everyone that range from staplers to watches. You can count on them for items that are well designed, make for excellent gifting (hint hint), and just plain look cool. Don't miss their big 60% sale, the orange lamp and rolling storage bench shown are a few steals, amongst many others. 'Nuff said.

Located at 38 North Main Street in downtown Concord New Hampshire, Interior Additions doesn't disappoint. The shop owner, Susan Phillipson, is very nice and decorates the store just wonderfully. Interior Additions features an eclectic array of beautiful home furnishings from sofas to rugs along with accessories like ceramics and art. Really nice modern glassware and garden accessories, too. When you step inside, you are whisked away to a coastal village in France since the store has a modern beach vibe to it. Very clean simple lines and non-complicated patterns and decor. Great prices. A real must-see.
