RISD (pronouced "riz-dee" or Rhode Island School of Design) has been around for 125 years refining artists and designers, stretching their imaginations, launching them into the world with the ability to create. Many RISD grads have produced products that we all benefit from and enjoy today. You can purchase items online from RISD at risd|works or in person at their beautiful Providence store, which features an annual collection of works by RISD alumni and faculty. Each item features a bio of the artist, which I really like, and when they attended RISD. They offer a variety of items from contemporary to folk, at affordable prices.
To me, owning something purchased directly from it's maker, so to speak, gives the item a feeling of being sacred. I cherish it for years to come. risd|works is perfect for those of us that don't want everything we own to be stamped, "Made in China".
If you're in the Providence area, you can also visit their storefront at 10 Westminster Street open M-S from 10-6 and on Sunday from 11-5. To view their website, visit them online at http://www.risdworks.com

Koo de Kir is a charming shop located in charming Beacon Hill at 65 Chestnut Street. Wallpaper and Travel + Leisure voted them "World's Best" for home accessories. "Improper Bostonian" honored them as "Boston's Best" home boutique three years in row. Doug Wilson from Trading Spaces even shopped there for his $50,000 room. Now it's your turn to check them out and cast your vote.
Koo de Kir is a stylish retail haven offering modern fresh homewares in chic Beacon Hill. For those of you that aren't in Boston, you can visit their online store (http://www.koodekir.com/) to shop their impressive selection (not as ahhh-inspiring as the real thing since their online selection is limited).
This stylish retail environment also offers interior design services, and a gift registry. You'll find merchandise that you've seen in Elle Decor, Shop etc., Breathe, Lucky, Domino, and all the other big glossies, so they're right in step with the latest trends.
I like Koo de Kir because they carry items to suit every budget, the location is excellent, and you'll always find something new to add to your favorites list. Plus, strolling along Charles Street with a latte in hand, stopping at The King + I for Thai, then hopping over to Koo de Kir for some retail therapy... it's far too perfect of a day to pass by.

Angela Adams rugs are, simply put, 2DIE4. Using hand tufted 100% New Zealand wool, sheared into undulating patterns, each design is a masterfully crafted work of art. Due to her talent with color and use of dynamic patterns, Angela Adams quickly became a leader in contemporary design. The result, love affairs formed by design affectionados everywhere, craving her beautiful rugs.
But wait...rugs aren't all that's in her collection lately. She's added glasses, handbags, paper products, planners, furniture, tile, bedding...she just keeps blowing minds left and right. I love her stylish accessories.
If you're in Portland, Maine you simply must visit her flagship store located at 273 Congress Street. If you're not planning to be in Maine anytime soon, visit her online shop at http://www.angelaadams.com/

Flashback. 80's Toto. Sing along with me, "All I wanna do when I wake up in the morning is see you eyes, Rosanna....
Fast Forward. 2006. Cute dishware by company called Rosanna. No relation to Toto song. Just felt a rocker chick moment and had to seize it before a live audience. (You are still live after that, right?) Now onto said plates.
I've been purchasing Rosanna dishware since 2001, so I have some say in the matter. First off, they are so ridiculously cute. They're like the cutest puppy looking up at you with big eyes cute. The plates are sold in sets of 4 for around $25 and come packaged in girly girl decorative boxes that look like little hat boxes. They are made of sturdy stoneware and are microwave, dishwasher, and leaving them dirty in your sink for weeks, safe. The Rosanna collection also features mugs, teapots, frosted glass tumblers, and so many more not-so-plain-jane dishware that you just have to check them out for yourself.
Design tip: Buy a shadow box that is deep enough for the plate. Paint, wallpaper, or cork the back interior of the box. You can even use a mirror. Then, with amazingly strong hot glue, glue one of the "Parisian Wallpaper" plates into the frame, centered. Viola! Very cool art under glass.
"Need you all the way. Rosanna yeah...."
Rosanna is located in the University Village at 2619 NE Village Lane in Seattle. You can also shop her collection online at http://www.rosannainc.com

Good news for the winged and multi-legged ones. Things are about to change, you're about to get some respect. LA based IGE (pronounced long E-gay), is showing bugs a little love by showcasing gilded silver insects on wool pillows cut from men's suiting material, part of her creepy by cool insect line of pillows. Available in brown or grey pin striped fabric, these pillows are cruelty-free for bugs and won't leave you with the creepy crawlies.
In fact, Helene Ige, Parson's grad and the designer behind IGE, carries distinctive furniture featuring unique laminate insects on furnishings such as tables, too. Her organic pop art approach gives a modern flair to old-school design.
When in LA, you can visit her store at 7382 Beverly Blvd., or you can visit her website at http://www.igedesign.com/ to inquire about stores in your area that sell her wares.

What's not to love about designer John Derian's handmade decoupage collection? I have a 12x20 tray with birds in varied shades of green, teal, and chocolate on a shelf leaning over my desk. I'll never part with it. His stunning eye for color and eccentric style inspires me. His work feels very French - his shop, like one you'd spot in Paris. Whether it's a paperweight or a tray, you'll find that owning one decoupage item is never enough. To meet the needs of a collector, John Derian also carries paperweights, coasters, lamps, imports, antiques, quilts, table linens, and a unique line of stationery, to name just a few. With images of red coral, blue birds, fancy insects, vintage botancials, and other designs inspired by days gone by, you're sure to find something that appeals to you and fits the mood of your space. Prices start at $20 for a decoupage coaster, with plates around $105, and trays starting around $50-60 .
You can shop his flagship store in NYC on 6 East Second Street (Between 2nd Avenue and The Bowery) or browse his collection online at http://www.johnderian.com/

Laurie Smith, best known as the southern Interior Designer on Trading Spaces with the fiery red hair and spitfire personality to match (love her!), has launched a collection of textiles sold at Hancock Fabrics. You can shop for them online, or if you're like me and need to see and touch fabric in person, you can visit the Hancock Fabrics nearest to you. In my case, it was in Fitchburg, MA.
The store is very disorganized, a total chaotic mess. I would never go back now that I've seen the Laurie Smith line and purchased many of her textiles in person - I'd spare myself the visit of trekking all the way out to Fitchburg and simply shop Hancock Fabrics online. The cashier held us up at the register for nearly 25 minutes (I timed it) sorting out a problem their register had 'talking' to the bank when we swiped our card. The manager surfaced about 10 minutes into the transaction with a very relaxed look on her face, like it wasn't a problem that we've been standing there already for 10 minutes. Another 10 minutes passed and things still weren't working properly. We offered to just go to the ATM and return with cash, but they explained that the transaction may have already gone through to the credit card company so we needed to stick around. After 25 minutes, I grew restless and they let us leave without even signing for the transaction. The purchase was over $180, I couldn't believe a manager would let someone walk out of the store without verifying a purchase was truly paid for. In the end, the money was deducted from our account, but my husband and I vowed to never return to this location.
In addition to the register madness, it took about 20-30 minutes until someone was free to assist me at the cutting table, also very frustrating.
The brick and mortar store aside, the website seems to be very easy to navigate and all of the Laurie Smith fabrics are sold online, so there's really no need to visit a store. Take it from me, the LS fabrics are lovely. I made window treatments and pillows from mine and couldn't be happier. Way to go, Laurie!
So, I'm mixed about how to rate this store - the actual store is horrible, the fabric from LS is great. So, I'll give it 3 stars. If I was rating this based on the store experience, I'd rate it a 2 (it would have been a 1 star shop had it not been for the terrific 20% sale they were running) and I'd give the LS fabrics a 5 because I love her color palette - green, chocolate, orange, violet, and yellow, inspired by 50's-70's design, it really pops.

Ever since I heard about Environment 337 last summer, I've been intrigued by them. Their online store is really unique, and their storefront in Brooklyn is even better. Side point: Doesn't it appear as though more and more business owners are opening up shop in Brooklyn lately, or is it me? I say, Way to go Brooklyn!
Anyway, their website downright rocks and by far, has the smartest array of unique products that I've seen in a long time. I like how small they are compared to some of these online behemoths that take weeks of scrolling to figure out exactly which of the 5,000 pillow covers you really want.
Environment 337 is chic and simple. I like it. Shows that good things do come in small, odd, interesting little packages. Take the Berton Ridley doll they sell, made entirely of buttons. Certain to strike up quite the conversation displayed on your cherished Room + Board sofa, the Berton Ridley button doll is both creepy and cute all rolled into one little colorful man. Sorta reminds me of a guy I once dated...
Located online at http://www.e337.com/ and in Brooklyn on 337 Smith Street (F train to Carroll Street Station exit rear of train from Manhattan, 1/2 block on the right)
