After reading great reviews of Zula, we made it our Sat. night destination. It's a trendy place, but apparently that isn't enough to draw in any customers. The restaurant was dead and did not pick up at all even later in the night. We had a great waiter, very knowledgeable about the wines and food that Zula had to offer. And truthfully, the food was good, but not at the prices they were charging for it. Especially since I had to send my pork chop back for further cooking. I don't know whether it was the hefty bill or the library-like atmosphere, but I do not think I will be back at Zula.

Cyclone Anaya's is number one when it comes to good atmosphere. It's a tex-mex restaurant with a trendy touch. Young crowd and the bar on weekend nights can be hopping. However, I found the food to be just average. Drinks, too. The prices are not cheap, so I was expecting a tastier meal and margarita than what I got. The parking can be tight, but they valet for free. And service was good. But, in the end, I think I would rather enjoy my fajitas, even if it isn't in poshest of places.
*note - This review is for the restaurant on Durham.

My husband and I had a great experience at Cafe Annie. It was probably the fanciest dining experience we've had since we arrived 6 months ago and definitely the most expensive one. (We were using a gift certificate.) Service was wonderful, friendly but not too pushy. Atmosphere, wine, and appetizers were all good. We were really dazzled by our entrées. My husband ordered cinnamon roasted quail and I had the coffee roasted filet. Both were delicious and so interesting, like nothing we had tried before. Reservations are a must. We needed them a week ahead of time, for a late Tuesday supper! We will definitely keep this place on our list of places to celebrate special occasions. In the mean time, I want to check out Bar Annie for a more relaxed atmosphere and menu. I've heard their french fries are to die for!

I wouldn't have thought of writing a review about Central Market until my father came to town and just loved the place. He loves to cook and was enamored with the selection of food he found there. I'll admit that I was even impressed. You can find fresh fruits and veggies of every possible variety, an immaculate meat/seafood counter, wines, fresh-ground coffees, a bakery, candy counter, extensive deli, olive bar, and prepared food section. A little like Whole Foods, but on a larger scale. Go hungry because they often have lots of samples to try. A trip to Central Market will run you a few more bucks than your typical Kroger trip, and you won't find generic things like Coca-Cola or paper products, but the food is fantastic. My father made 3 trips during his five day visit! I can't complain because one night he made Chicken Cacciatore and roasted purple Peruvian potatoes.

We enjoyed our visit to The Painted Lady Inn in San Antonio. Each of the rooms is decorated differently and named after some historical figure. We stayed in the Andy Warhol room. The room was spacious enough, very clean and comfortable. Like most B & B's, my favorite part was the breakfast. It was served in your room rather than a dining room, and it was delicious. It really was like having breakfast in bed! The innkeepers were polite and helpful when you needed them, but scarce when you were looking for privacy. Other perks include a rooftop hot tub and comfy, cozy robes. If I could change one thing, it would be to move The Painted Lady closer to the River Walk Area. It is definitely walking distance but located in a quiet, business neighborhood. At night, it makes for a rather dark walk back from the River Walk to the inn.

The men and women who work at Luke's Locker are experts on all things athletic. When I was in the market for a new pair of running sneakers, I decided to check them out. First of all, they had the largest selection of sneakers I had seen after an exhausting search at the mall. The sneaker wall was even a little daunting until a very helpful salesman was able to guide me in the right direction. After a little walk up and down the store, he was able to tell me what kind of shoe would work the best for me and then recommend different brands, elaborating on the pros and cons of each. He even gave me directions to some running trails around town. I received the same treatment on another occasion when I was shopping for shirts. Who would have thought there would be so much to know about moisture-wicking shirts?! My one complaint is that they are a bit expensive. I might pay a little extra for sneakers, but I think I'll shop for athletic wear somewhere less expensive.

When my kitty was not feeling herself, I began a quick search to find a vet. I came across the Cat Doctor and was able to make an appointment for that day. Dr. Caroline Oeben runs this small, cat-only practice, and she did a great job with my kitty. She gave me plenty of time to explain my cat's ailments and performed a thorough exam before deciding to run some blood tests. I really appreciated how she estimated the cost of these tests before doing them. This avoided "sticker shock" at the check-out counter. After the results were in, which only took about 10 minutes, Dr. Oeben carefully explained what they meant and how we can manage to make my pet feel much more comfortable. It is clear that Dr. Oeben loves animals from the gentle and loving care she gives them. Of course, my cat is feeling much better. She's snoozing away!

As a relocated Yankee, I'm always on the lookout for good pizza. When I heard that Star Pizza was THE place to go for good pizza, I was there. We had great service, but sadly, I was disappointed with the pizza. I don't know exactly what was different. Maybe it was the not-so-crispy crust or the very-blah tomato sauce, but it just wasn't the same. I did give it a second try, ordering a to-go pie, but experienced the same results. Except this time, the crust tasted a lot like the cardboard box it was carried in. I will continue my quest for good pizza in Houston.

I've been to Charlie's twice, and left happy both times. I always struggle to find a good salon, but when I read rav reviews of this place, I decided to try it. It is not a particulary fancy salon. It is simply, but pleasantly decorated, and staff is very friendly, not a bit snooty. Prices are average, about $45ish for a haircut and blow dry. My first visit was for a haircut, and I was thrilled to find hairdressers that actually knew how to cut curly hair. You know it's a good haircut when your locks are still cooperating weeks afterward. Charlie's was also able to fix a highlighting job gone bad. My hairdresser turned my bleached skunk stripes into something much more natural and attractive. As long as my hair keeps growing, I will keep going to Charlie's.

It's never fun to board our cats when we go away, for them or for us. However, I feel a little better leaving them in good hands at the Cat's Pause. It is a small, cat-only kennel run by a bona fide cat lover. We have 2 cats so the "Texan suite" suits them just fine. Their "suite" is always clean both when I drop them off and pick them up. The owner allows some creature comforts from home, even encourages it. I like that she spends time with all the cats. (She has a chair in their room and watches TV with them.) I've never had a problem making a reservation, but she does fill up for Thanksgiving and Christmas in advance. Note: Usually, payment is made when you pick up your animal, but for these two holidays, it's a pre-pay deal. You can also arrange for an assortment of cat grooming while your cat is being boarded. I met the groomer, and he is very friendly. He was shaving a cat and the cat wasn't scratching his eyes out. Impressive.
