A short drive from Boston, Westport Mass is a beautiful undeveloped seaside location. It is also home to a fantastic restaurant, the Back Eddy. The restaurant sits on a small spit of land and abuts a local marina. The location gets your juices flowing for fresh, local seafood, and the Back Eddy does not disappoint. The decor is fresh and open and liberally uses bright colors reminiscent of the Caribbean.
The restaurant focuses on supporting not just the local fishermen, but produce growers, cheese makers and breweries.
Their chowder was rich and sublime with a Portuguese influence, salads were fresh and varied and very generous portions. Seafood entrées were delectable. I had local New Bedford sea scallops broiled in an apple wood smoked bacon and the flavor combination was outstanding. The scallops were incredibly fresh, and done to perfection. The grilled swordfish was also outstanding.
I enjoyed a glass of the local Westport Rivers Winery's chardonnay.
Overall a great dining experience and a true vacation feel, even for a one day road trip!

This time last year, I was at the French Open, and for the past several days, I have wished I was back in Paris. Fortunately a friend invited to me to dine at Petit Robert Bistro and from the moment I entered this divine and charming place, I was instantly swept back to my favorite Parisian bistro. I started with a mixed green salad with a tangy, but subtle, mustard vinaigrette. The fresh bread was a tip off that this establishment has deep roots in presenting a traditionally exquisite french dining experience. The small baguette was so crisp and fresh, I could have dined on bread alone. But being the glutton that I am, I could not resist ordering the calves liver with onions and bacon. I may only try this dish once a year, so it has been quite awhile since I have been able to savor a presentation as sublime as this. The spot on presentation indicates to me that all entrées would be beautifully prepared. (And while I love Brasserie Jo, let me say that their presentation of calves' liver is not even in the same league.) The steak frites that my friend ordered were outstanding. There are so many wonderful items on the menu that I can not wait to go back. Some very interesting seafood preparations will be the area I will focus on on my next visit, primarily the creamy lobster bisque and an item that featured scallops in their shell...Yum..
And, the service was outstanding!
This is a wonderful place for a first date, an anniversary and especially for couples who enjoy a great dining out experience.

Sorelle's has some of the best lunch food in the entire city. From homemade soups (I just had a Tuscan White Bean soup this week) to fresh salads and really great sandwich combinations, it does everything well. The staff is friendly and efficient and if you eat -in, it has Wi-Fi in the City Square location. (The original Sorelle's is in the Monument area of Charlestown.)
Preparations are always fresh and interesting. Among my favorite are the Asian Chicken Salad that comes with a delicious sesame dressing and a similar version in a whole wheat wrap called Peking Chicken. There are also varied daily specials in addition to the soups, such as Pizettas, Panini sandwiches, etc.
I am not a breakfast person, but they also offer breakfast and have great coffee and baked goods, such as scones.

Do not believe any of the breathlessly positive reviews of this establishment. It is so misguided on so many levels, I do not know even where to begin. So let me start with the food....I went with three friends and so we were able to sample several appetizers, salads, and entrees. The quesadilla was presented like a deep-fried flying saucer, and was so unappealing, it was left uneaten. On to the salads, we thought, and while adequate, they were so small for the price, that unfortunately, we were still hungry when our entrees arrived. The special of the evening was a London Broil. Someone sitting next to us ordered the same, and it looked good. So we gave it a try. It was presented to us maybe an hour after we ordered it, and was so rare, it was still raw. We sent it back, and this very expensive, off the menu special for the evening, was then returned to us as a heap of sliced meat in a pile on a small dish, totally absent of any of the side dishes initially presented, such a vegetables and potatoes. This was totally inexcusable. At this point, it was Please...get us out of here!!!
We sat at the bar, and I can only characterize the service as the Southie equivalent of Daryl, Daryl and Daryl..three bozos who were more into themselves than even trying to attempt to satisfy a customer.
To be fair, the only redeeming entrée was the burger, which I admit was quite good. But it was surely not enough to ever get me to set foot in this restaurant again.
Oh yes, and if someone should think, why didn't you approach the manager and tell him why you were so disappointed in your meal? ... Well, on my way to the ladies room, I encountered a heated shouting match between either one of the owners or manager and a kitchen person...again a very unprofessional display that totally summed up my evening. I wanted to scream!

Who would imagine that one of the most authentic Thai restaurants in Boston would be located in Charlestown? I enjoy many of the Thai restaurants in our city, but I think Chow Thai does the best with Duck ChoChee and many other traditional preparations, including a broad range of curries. While the owner is an American, I believe that his wife is Thai which accounts for the excellent preparations and flavorings. This is a low-key, but very homey and comfortable spot. It is well worth the trip to the beautiful main street area of Charlestown, near the Bunker Hill Monument and not far from "Old Ironsides" for some of the best Thai in the city.

If you love to cook, no doubt you will love this outpost of culinary nirvana in Chestnut Hill. It stocks everything any self respecting home chef covets. The staff is so knowledgeable and will lead you in the right direction based on their knowledge...not something they read in the catalog. I have gotten everything from small gratin dishes to extravagant coffee makers here. If you spend time in the kitchen and enjoy it, then take the next step and indulge yourself in the best made, highest quality kitchen accroutrements. It's a fun place to shop.

Boston restaurants sometime seem like second class citizens to New York restaurants, although thankfully this has been changing over the past several years. Meze is one restaurant in Boston that easily surpasses its New York counterparts. The decor is exciting, with an open kitchen and nicely laid out bar area. The menu has great variety with many small plates (Meze) that can be shared for a casual dinner with friends. For a special occasion, the entrees are outstanding. Lamb and seafood preparations are well structured and nicely presented. The wine list features some great Greek wine. You will feel like you are on vacation at this incredible restaurant.
The food is very high end, the best example being that a traditional Greek salad is presented with Heirloom tomatoes.

This little gem features an outstanding raw bar. It is such an attractive space that you want to settle in and spend as much time savoring the ambience as well as the excellent food. In addition to oysters from many different areas, the dinner entrees are outstanding. I really enjoyed a braised cod that was the featured special one evening. The wine list is well thought out to complement the outstanding seafood. It is entirely casual and a great place to bring out of town guests. It is a small spot, so try to go early before it fills up. Why even consider going to a blah Legal Seafood when there is a restaurant like this!

The season's over and I miss Fenway. I went to Game On last Sunday to watch the Patriots. It was the place to be and a totally fun experience. With over 80 TV's, you get caught up in the action and root together with other patrons. It's the next best thing to being at a game. The best part was that the food was so good. The menu has a broad range of items, and not just usual sports bar fare. Thin crust pizza, turkey reuben sandwiches, a fresh salad...and of course you can get a great burger. The Pats won, spring training is just around the corner, and Game On will become my home away from home for now.

This is a great neighborhood spot. It is casually elegant and serves wonderful food. The steak frite is worthy of any Parisian bistro and seafood preparations are outstanding. It should become a destination restaurant so those outside of Charlestown can enjoy this undiscovered gem. The owner is always present and works very hard to make sure his patrons are enjoying the food and ambiance. Put this on your list.
