So i really enjoy good coffee and I was first drawn to Victrola because I had read about this new espresso machine company, Synesso, based in seattle and Victrola was one of the first cafes to install Synesso's 'uber' espresso machines (www.synesso.com/)
my first experience was so-so....yes the coffee was great...but it was more the experience that I just didn't jive with. The cashier and barista seemed a bit pretentious and rude......and it took a good 5 minutes to get my espresso....yes there were 5-6 people in front of me....but it seemed very odd indeed.
but i figured i'd give it another try and i've been back 4-5 times, but it's always the same experience......which is unfortunate as the coffee is great......but there are lots of great coffee shops and roasters in seattle.....that offer a much better experience.
on one instance i was ordering a sandwich and the cashier/barista had a pissed off attitude that they had to grill the sandwich.....and then when he delivered it......it was the wrong one.....so he was even more pissed........at what i have no idea, but it's unfortunate that i've had this same type of experience on several occasions.
So, if i'm on 15th and have 15 min to kill...i might hit Victrola or head down to Ladro (which usually has very nice baristas and great coffee as well)......or I find myself many times willing to walk on down to 19th and hit FUEL which is about as non-pretentious as you can get and has great coffee.
but if you're in the mood for some pretentiousness...then you know exactly where to head.
andiamo!

we stumbled on Hana after a friend told us they had the best Katsu Curry he's ever had, which isn't a common dish for a Japanese restaurant to be known for. As we entered for the first time we noticed lots of Japanese customers and yes, the owner/sushi chef is also Japanese. (as a general rule if the sushi chef is not native Japanese, then you better stick to the cucumber roll and water). Not only is their katsu curry amazing (i'd suggest getting the curry on the side though) they also have some of the best tempura in Seattle. Tempura is supposed to be light in color and not greasy which means they use fresh oil and you can really tell in the taste. Their sushi is decent as well and very reasonable! you can't compare it to a Saito or Nishino, but it's very fresh.....a step up from BlueC.
their prices are very reasonable and the service is great.......overall a great value!.............so do yourself a favor and get some real miso, green tea and sake in you.....you'll feel much better.

Leroy is a great guy and will help get you setup and even alters the pants while you wait. It's a little tricky to find as the storefront is small, but just keep your eye out for the amazing suits in the window.
So, if you need a litttle something different for your next 'outing', be sure to drop in and see what Leroy's got on hand. Be sure to ask him what he's got in the back room as well since not everything is on display. And of course he can special order anything like that red rabbit's fur full length jacket you've been eyeing all these years.
and the prices are very reasonable. Blah to george zimmerman.........Leroy is your man!

Virginia Inn used to be one of our favorite spots, but on our most recent visit it seems that there are new owners and the experience was unfortunately...... not great. They've updated a few things, new paint, etc. the menu (food/bar) is basically the same on the surface but the service was terrible. We ordered one of our favorite dishes (brie app) and it was a very disappointing. (lower quality brie along with skimpy servings of apple slices and bread) I ordered a 'hot toddy' and the didn't have any honey. Instead of asking me if i wanted a different drink, they just served it with table sugar............= not tasty.
In the past the service at Virginia Inn was stellar, but this time there were all new faces and the service was not only unattentive, but several of the servers were rather rude.
we want the old owners BACK!!!!!

if you're looking for some exercise the Sodo Arena Sports is a decent field with the new "uber" indoor turf you see now (husky, seahawks stadium). it's pretty convenient to get to if you're coming from downtown or anywhere on the west side. they have all sorts of leagues and levels of play, so dust off them boots and get the blood flowing.
if you're on the east side, their facility in redmond is brand new and VERY nice. 3 indoor fields with a 'club house' for kids bday parties or there's a small bar for a pint after the game.

we recently used Cascade for an inner city move and they were on time and very professional. They even were able to obtain parking permits and put out 'no parking' signs the night before so that we didn't have any issues during the move. This is especially critical in the city where parking is brutal.
The quote/rate was fair and they went a little over, but it was definitely worth it. They hustled, were careful and I'd definitely use them again. best $ i've ever spent .....and my lower back (and friends) thank me for it:)

only thing worse than the actual moving boxes part of relocating is finding a new dentist. I've had 10 or so dentists over my life and Dr. Mairani is the best by far. Bottom line, he's honest and does very good work.
ever gone to a new dentist only to have them say, "oh, you have 2 cavities and you also need a gum graph"......when your last dentist of 4 yrs never mentioned anything like this? Dentists are in business, so use common sense.
Mairani's work is also top notch and i've had several dentists comment on my fillings. "Your previous dentist did some great work here".
I've seiously contemplated flying back to SF just so i can see Dr. Mairani.....yes....he's IS that good.
ok, not to sound like some xbox fanboy who sleeps out for the Halo2 launch, but finding an honest dentist (or any professional for that matter) is a very hard thing.
you don't think he's good.....email and your next pint is on me.
ps. keep flossing

I work in SF on a regular basis and stay in hotels quite a bit usually targeting the $100-$150/night. Carlton just completed a $5mil renovation and the rooms are very clean. One annoying thing is that there is free internet in the lobby, but they charge you extra from internet in the rooms. If you get a room that "includes internet" you'll simply be paying $10-$15 more per day for the same room without internet.
It's pretty annoying especially how inexpensive it is with wifi to get the rooms wired.
some comparables i've stayed in, Diva, kensington park, commodore, union square hotel, pickwick. Carlton is definitely cleaner and nicer than any of these, which are in the similar price range.
location is great as well where you're a quick walk to union sq (10 min) but also can hit polk st and other parts of the city away from union sq.
get there.

The Exercise Company located in the basement of The Smith Tower is small, but very nice.
It's mostly professionals in the building and you never have to wait for any of the machines. Eric Olsen is one of the founders and is a great trainer.
they have showers/lockers and it's a very clean gym. plenty of running/bike machines, weight machines and tvs:)
www.exercisecompany.com
if you're in the area, this is definitely the best, small niche gym in downtown. rates are reasonable as well.
