If you're near Redwood City, drop in Whole Foods for lunch. They have a huge selection of pre-made sandwiches and salads. Go over to the bakery section to pick a dessert--the super expensive desserts are cut into individual portions and sold at reasonable prices! They have a big choice of hot food from the steam tables and a GIANT salad bar. The soups (there are usually 3 or 4 of them) are top-notch too. You don't have to grocery shop, just eat lunch there!

They also carry items you don't find anywhere else, such as stove blacking, oil lamps, and bib overalls. This place is owned by refugees from Palo Alto, so it is very sophisticated (check out the book selection) as well as very country.
