Who could resist a museum with world famous dinosaurs and casts of dinosaur footprints? If it's too crowded in the dino sections, scope out the gems and minerals, animals from Teddy Roosevelt's time in huge dioramas, look at what's living underground - giant depictions of ants and worms, as well as exhibits on Eskimo life, forests, etc etc. Lots to see and you can spend a full day roaming around here. Yes, there are sometimes lots of schoolkids but you can go to the less popular sections and still be entertained and of course, when you get tired, there's always IMAX movie to fall back on. Children's store could be upgraded with better quality goods but upstairs gift shop is chock full of interesting books and items.

Fun for tourists and native New Yorkers alike, Madame Tussauds wax museum is a clone of its famous London museum. It has a large display of its famous wax figures(Michael Jordan, the pope, presidents, celebrities) dressed in glamourous duds for you to prance around and take pictures with. You must take your time as you go through the rooms because it is over all too quickly - at least 1 - 2 hours- to make it worth the admission . Well worth the visit and don't forget to take your camera!

A grand museum on the edge of Central Park, the Metropolitan Museum of Art has a little something for everyone. If you're not into sculpture and paintings, you can still catch a look at Tiffany glass, walk by a famous Egyptian temple and mummies, view exquisite Chinese scrolls, etc etc. Great for a rainy day. Humungous lobby with coat check facility so you don't have to lug your stuff all over the museum - just stroll in comfort instead. Materials available for children as well or visit the museum site for interactive games etc. A little snooty but worth the dollar or two donation (the suggested donation is $15 but remember it is only suggested!)
Closed Mondays.

Fresh Direct's prices are comparable to the higher end supermarkets in Manhattan. It was great when they first broke into NYC and were offering rebates on the first and second delivery. I did hear some really scary stories about one of their deliverymen threatening a customer (he was since fired) after he delivered groceries there. However, have had no problems myself and delivery is on time and polite and groceries are packaged well. I have been very satisfied with their meat, wish their prepared foods tasted as good as they look on the web site.

This corner shop in downtown NYC has a fairly big selection of cards (including even Chinese New Year cards) and gifts. Right now they are having a 75% off after Christmas sale and you can get a good deal on boxed cards, Christmas plush, ribbon and paper, ornaments (there was one of the pope!)etc. A pack of about 25 paper plates, napkins, etc in a Christmas theme was only $3!!!! Nice quick service. Ample room to look around.

I needed announcements/invitations done and priced them at various printers throughout the city and found the best deal at G M Printing. Later, someone I trusted also gave this shop excellent reviews. Staff are polite and friendly and readily answer any questions and address your concerns over the phone and in person. They are also very quick and can do about 200 in under a week! Neat shop. Close to bus transportation near Bowery Street, not far from Chinatown.

St. John was the patron saint of Bohemia and this UES neighborhood church on the corner of First Avenue has a large Slovak following (there are regular masses in Slovakand English). Beautiful stained glass windows and beautifully decorated church. They still use real candles for the votives not those tacky electric timed ones. Audio system echoes at times and sometimes makes it difficult to understand. Sometimes, homeless are sleeping in the vestibule which can make the single worshipper somewhat apprehensive on entering.

The theater at MSG is a nice venue for theater productions like the recent Peter Pan with Cathy Rigby (wonderful!) and children's fare like Sesame Street Live. Best to get seats close up in orchestra so you can really see all the action. They do let you move to closer seats if no one comes for them. Several years back they had Christmas Carol here and did up the lobby in Victorian towns theme and it was really lovely and they sold nice well made ornaments. Now it has devolved into a circus-type atmosphere with vendors hawking popcorn, cotton candy etc at high prices before the show and during intermission. You are better off bringing your own treats for the kids or buying them nearby at KMart or Duane Reades. They also sell cheap toys and flashlights at high prices. Try also to get discount tickets since regular prices are fairly high. Booster seats available for the asking.

Conveniently located on 46th Street near the Lexington Avenue train lines, this is a very good place to find dress clothes for that special occasion - good selection of sports coats, suits and tuxedos (also available for rental - but worth purchasing if you intend to use it for several occasions) as well as the matching accessories - bowtie, vest, etc. Try to shop early since alterations take time and remember to tip the tailor. Excellent personal service. Try on everything including the shirt to make sure that is the look you want.
