This store sells everything for your pampered pooch--and I do mean everything. This is where I go to buy new and unique dog toys that neither I nor my dogs have ever seen before. I don't know if they field test their toys before they stock them, but every one I've bought here my dogs have gone wild over.
Like most boutique dog stores, their prices are a bit higher, but in terms of quality stock it's worth it. They also have plenty of parking with their own lot, so this may be the Portland dog store to buy your 40 lb. bags of kibble at.

They moved a couple of years ago and their store is now huge. They have a big selection of not only fish and inverts, but also supplies, food, and tanks. The fish here usually seem to be in pretty decent health. The store leans more toward the saltwater tank but I have found a few obscure loaches and cichlids here. The two big drawbacks are that their prices are kind of high on dry goods, and their staff is really hit or miss, so on some days you might get really bad customer service.

This is one of the best fish stores around. They have a great selection of very healthy fish. This is the only fish store (to my knowledge) that quarantines all of its fish before it puts them out for sale, so you are pretty much guaranteed to not bring home some nasty disease to your tank. They generally carry all of the usual suspects, as well as surprising you with some very unsual species once in a while. They also have one of the best selections of freshwater plants around.
The big downside to this store is that it's cramped and kind of scary. The floors sag in spots and it's very dark. But--the fish are in great health, and they almost always have very helpful, knowledgable staff here.

Dr. Beryl is an old school vet. He provides excellent care for a great price. He takes a very non-invasive approach to vet care. He was our dog's vet for a couple of years before we relocated, and we were visited him for both routine shots and borderline emergency situations. He was great in every context, and my dog always received exceptional care.
The front office staff could get rather flustered when it got busy.

This pet supply store has the best prices on premium pet food and supplies such as Advantage and Frontline. They have a wide range of accessories, too, such as collars, leashes, beds and toys. This store is more geared to cats and dogs than other kinds of pets. The staff can be kind of hit or miss sometimes, and the parking is always tight. But their prices make the hassle worth it.

In many respects, the Food Mill is just another over-priced natural food store. However, the bulk section is the real attraction here, espcially the bulk spices. This place has just about every spice, herb, pasta, flour, sugar--you name it--in bulk, all incredibly fresh and at fantastic prices. The Food Mill's homemade chocolate chip bars are another thing to check out--they're addictive, and a whole lot better than Chips Ahoy! The customer service can be pretty hit or miss here, and the parking is downright awful. However, if you need to restock your spice supply for a great price, this is a place you need to check out.

Or the kind of upscale food you just can't find at Safeway, but without paying Andronico's prices? Then head over to Farmer Joe's, which is tucked into a small lot on MacArthur Blvd. and 35th Street. This may be the best-kept secret in Oakland. The quality of the produce is better than just about anywhere else in the East Bay. They have a great bulk selection and a wide variety of packaged food items as well. The customer service is phenomenal--most of the staff will know everything about you, and I've been called at home when I forgot a bag of groceries on the counter.
There are a few drawbacks--it's a pretty small space for the number of people who come here, and sometimes parking can be tight. However, it's well worth these minor inconveniences. Farmer Joe's is a neighborhood institution. One trip here and you'll see why.

You can depend on finding very high quality clothing in great shape when you come here--this place will spoil you for all other used kids' clothing stores. They will also buy your good quality children's apparel, but only if it's in impeccable condition.
They provide excellent customer service, but be warned it can get busy if you come around lunchtime. The store is very well-organized and clean. Highly recommended for discriminating parents.
