We didn't get a bargain basement price, but we feel it is in getting into the spirit of the season to buy our trees at the Dunshee House on Capitol Hill (near Group Health.) This fundraiser supplies most of their annual operating budget; they support folks with HIV/AIDS and have been around for a long time. They have two lots that are completely volunteer run. We bought a beautiful, large noble fir for $59 plus garland at a $1 a foot.

Visitng San Diego and had the good fortune of happening upon Skin Goddess on 3rd Avenue in Chula Vista. I wasn't sure what I was going to get, after all it was only $65 for a NINETY minute facial, the least I've paid in some years. Sofia was not only one of the most thorough estheticians I have known, she is likely the kindest. She is a skin godess. She is very passionate about her work, has a great heart- has strong fingers if you like your massage deep like I do- and my skn looks great. She doesn't advertise, word-of-mouth has sufficed for her business, and I can see why.

I went to Derby's on the strength of these reviews for a facial and eyebrow wax. Perhaps there are other better facialists but mine was not good at all(Stephanie.) Also, the environment left MUCH to be desired-I am surprised no one has described the grim grey and dull orange walls, fluorescent lighting and noise from the adjacent room! And the bad muzak on the tiny cd player was god-awful. All of that said, I still could have had a great experience with a good aesthetician. I like the products very much and the sequence of nearly 1/2 hour of face/neck/shoulder massage interspersed with the treatment was a good one. But this couldn't overcome the incredibly perfunctory, like-bad-sex, "techinical" massage and facial I received from S. I don't know if it is always this way or this was a bad day, but at one point I even laughed out loud just because it was sooo absurdly brusque in its execution.

I heard buzz about her through a couple of friends with great brows and then I finally went. Perfect experience with the uber-hip Angela (thought I was in Manhattan for a moment.) I would give her a perfect rating but perfect for me would mean I can go to her regularly but I think $25 for a brow wax is too much no matter how good you are. But if it is worth it to you, I would definitely give her a try.

Betty Jean is a top-notch healer-period. I have had a ton of massage in not-too-long life to deal with chronic pain and she is among the very best. Her rates are very reasonable at $65 an hour, though you give up the spa atmosphere in exchange for a somewhat noisy corner building office. The room itself is peaceful and she has a rotating art "gallery" in her office, but the street traffic is ever present. That said, if you are not just the occasional luxury-treatment massage person and actually want someone to help heal your body, I would definitely go to her rather than a Gene Juarez or some other salon type experience. Other truly excellent massage therapists are Lynne Compton on Capitol Hill and Valerie Olney in the Roosevelt area--both are far less costly than salon therapists and with Lynne and Valerie, because they work for a chirpopractor and naturopath respectively you may be able to bill insurance. Don't have numbers handy for either though.

I don't know about the porcelain specifically, but I couldn't hesitate to recommend these true professionals with a great chair-side manner and their excellente supporting staff. My husband, who is in his late 40's had all but given up on finding a great dentist experience, and after urging him to go to mine, he now looks forward to going there to "catch" up with our hygenist friend, Alizah, and the doc! So, it's a good place to begin anyway-best wishes, L
