Piedmont Environmental Center - Hiking Trails

Thursday, November 03, 2005
The PEC is free and open to the public during daylight hours. There is a center with a few animals and reptiles on display, information about the flora and fauna of the area, and a giant outdoor map of North Carolina. There are also occasional events, such as a wildflower sale and a Halloween trail walk. A professional naturalist is generally available to answer questions or handle pre-arranged kid's activities, like scout hikes or school field trips. However, the real jewel of the PEC is the walking trails through a variety of terrains. Even though the PEC is not far from the center of town, these trails feel like the middle of the forest, and can be hiked or run in anywhere from 20 minutes to a couple of hours. Leashed dogs are also allowed, so this is a great place to take Fido to get some outside exercise.
