this is the place to go! archie mcphee's is the most fun little store. or stores, as there are now 2 of them on the same lot - a 'home' store and the 'everything else on earth' store.
the home store has garbage pails, shower curtains, clocks, animal statues, and all sorts of stuff for the house. the main store has the oddest of odds and ends, from meat-scented air fresheners to bacon wrapping paper to americal idol collectors cards and about a zillion other things. most items are very cheap - it once took us an hour to use up a $50 gift card! the store is just loads of fun, as is the staff.

let's start with the good - this place is way more than a mail dispatch, it's also a boutique with a ton of cute and eclectic items. from shoes to clothing to jewelry, cards, soaps, purses, etc. this store seems to have it all. the staff is nice and very helpful, and they are located in a convenient area (on queen anne ave).
BUT almost everything in the store is overpriced, and every time i am in there and have to deal with one of the owners (mother/daughter team), they are rude, moody, snobby, distant...take your pick. they act like it's my priviledge to be allowed to enter into their store. zero customer service on their part.

or a meal. or a cup of coffee.
child's play cafe is a new concept (and a new establishment) and one i hope catches on quickly. the simple explanation...it's a cafe that has a supervised play area for kids.
the longer one...it's a cafe that serves fresh, delicious food and has a nice selection - great sandwiches, salads, soups, desserts, etc. they also serve several different kids platters, including quesadillas, hot dogs, sandwiches, etc. and they all come with sides. they have an espresso machine so you can get your java fix. they ALSO have a large, supervised play area so you can drop your kid in the play 'room' and be able to enjoy a relaxing meal at a tall table where you can see your kid and/or comfy couches. they also have a small store with cute selections of gifts, puzzles, etc. there are several chairs that have been 'converted' to high chairs, and kid-sized tables too.
there are 2 play areas for toddlers and a seperate infants room. the toddler/kid part has great toys, including mats, kitchens, books, trucks, etc. the toys are all clean and in good shape.
finally, they have restrooms which are fully stocked with dipes and wipes!
call and make a reservation if you can - they can get pretty packed.

the people who work at pagliaccis all seem to love there job - i've never eaten at a sort-of fast food place where everyone seems so genuinely happy to be at work (ditto for the phone order takers). i love how they keep your last orders on file, so you can just say 'i want the salad i got last time' and they have that info right in front of them. their pizzas are always yummy, they don't charge for delivery, their prices are fair, and their pizzas arrive piping hot in 35-45 minutes.
some of their seasonal pizzas are weird, like pear primo, but they use fresh, seasonal ingredients and you can get a pizza made any way you want.

to be fair to them, i've tried their calzones several times. and every time they've fallen short.
where i come from, calzones are chock full of a nice, hot, squishy ricotta concoction that might also have other 'stuff' in it, like veggies, sausage, etc. and they burst open when you cut them. pete's calzones are chock full of mozzerella, very watery, too hard on the outside, and the veggies on the inside are bland.
they have good in-store service and great salads, so it's worth going there. just not for the calzones.

but their salads and subs rule! subs are hot or cold, have a good amount of 'meat' on them, good spices, etc. and their salads are also great - i often crave their chef salad.
call ahead for your order, as they are often busy.

they are still nice, still come on time, still bring their own stuff, etc. but the last few times they were here they did a sub-par job. once i walked in and didn't even realize that they had cleaned one of the levels of the house - it just wasn't all that clean, didn't smell fresh, etc. and last time they were here they failed to wipe off a dusty dining room table, didn't mop the kitchen, etc. t
luckily the woman who cleaned our home for years is back working, so rova is no longer working for me.
john and roxanna are terrific. they come on time, clean everything they can see, bring their own products, work quickly, and are nice. they often will do extra things like clean out/wipe down the inside of the fridge - even without being asked.
and once they had to cancel and i was in a rut - having 40 people over for a party in a few days. so they came over the day of the party to clean the house, and that's usually their day off.
very trustworthy, and i highly recommend.

years ago when hubby saw an indy coffee shop open between a starbucks and tully's, he laughed. now we know not to laugh - that's the only place we'll get our coffee. first and most importantly, their coffee is delish! doesn't taste like cardboard like some other places that shall remain nameless. secondly, their prices are fair. third, their baristas rock - there can be a line out the door and there's still not going to be a long wait for your drinks. and finally, they have amazing pastries, pie, etc!

not only does jak's serve prime beef at 1/2 the price of other steakhouses, but you will also get a salad, side dish and potato (or fries) along with it.
the place feels like a steakhouse - it's dim, dark booths, etc. they have a full bar and make a nice drink. but the whole reason to go there is the food! the salad will come so fast that you'll think they are serving it to the wrong table, and your entree with the sides will come before you're finished with the salad. the beef is perfectly seasoned and cooked and the sides are great too. (last time i waent the potato was the size of my arm!).
they are nice, friendly people who just seem to not want to charge $45+ for prime beef.
the only downside is that they don't take reservations so if you have a large party or go on a busy night, prepare to wait.
