Diddy Reise is a staple in a Bruin's diet. Living in Westwood or just visiting UCLA is never complete with out a trip to this popular student hang-out. For just one dollar Diddy Reise offers your choice of any of the following three specials: three cookies - any combination, any combination of two cookies/brownies with a glass of milk, or the ultimate - the Diddy Reise ice cream sandwich. Here the customer gets his or her choice of two freshly baked cookies - again any combination including chocolate chip, peanut butter, chocolate chip-walnut, cinnamon sugar, white chocolate chip-macadamia nut, etc - with a large scoop of any flavor of their many various Dreyer's ice cream flavors. This treat is the perfect match to a movie, a night out, or just a late night craving. And they are open late. Lines can get long during busy hours - i.e. the just after dinner rush - however, with many employees, quick and easy ordering, and a cash only policy, the line moves very quickly. They also offer several meals including cheap hot dogs for example. In my many times to Diddy Reise, I have only seen one person order anything but an ice cream sandwich. They are the ultimate treat for just a dollar.

Who could turn down a Krispy Kreme Donut? Chris Rock joked that if customers found out Krispy Kreme had drugs in them, we would simply go "I knew something was up; those were too good." Well, he was right. These donuts are simply delicious and irrestible. When you immediately see them you know you want one. And they proudly show them off - from their doughy start - to there finish under the icing machine. This is a nice feature of a Krispy Kreme Shop. It becomes like an event. You follow them down the conveyer belt towards their ultimate destination - your mouth. They have many different varieties - and all should be tried - however, the classic Original Glazed is a great stand-by. If you do pass by and their florescent "Hot Light" is lit advertising that their donuts are "Hot Now" definately stop by. You are guaranteed to have a free sample of the delicious pastry. Then freely decide which one(s) you want. This is the hard part. Definately get a drink to go with it. Chocolate or regular milk is always a great compliment. The donuts are different from the standard traditional donut to which most are familiar. Yet this different take at a traditional treat, is a welcomed departure. After trying a Krispy Kreme, you may not want any other type.

Why "The Best Summer Venue In Los Angeles!" Well, simply, where else are you offered the incredible quality of sound of the Los Angeles Philarmonic set in front of a beautiful back-drop, and at the extremely low starting price of a dollar?! That's right, tickets for the back rows of the Hollywood Bowl begin at a dollar. For just one buck you get to hear one of the nation's - the world's greatest orchestras perform music from many greats such as Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, Mendelsohn, Hayden, and many more. The line-up for the Hollywood Bowl summer events also includes contemporary acts. This past season they had Brian Wilson. The year before that Phoenix performed along with Sondre Lerche. Sigur Ros has also performed. The Dave Brubeck Quartet with The Ramsey Lewis Trio. Opera Divas and Tenors. Many of the greatest performers in music perform at the Hollywood Bowl, and admission to most shows begins at just one dollar. Some shows are a steeper ... ready for it ... three dollars, but these events include great extra feeatures such as their grand fireworks show on July Fourth. They also often do Movie Nights where great Hollywood film composers visit to conduct their great compositions in front of a great projection of film clips. There are also the occasionaly sing-a-long film nights. Two years ago, there was a complete production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream along with the Los Angeles Philarmonic performing the work of Mendelsohn. Also, a great feature of the Hollywood Bowl is the setting; patrons are sitting in front of a great view of the Hollywood Hills - including the Hollywood Sign. Performances begin and run mainly through sunset adding a nice visual feature. Do bring a blanket or a jacket, because it will get cold. The other great bonus is that the Bowl welcomes and in fact encourages guests to bring their own picnic baskets for food and wine. Bring some food, eat, listen to great music, and enjoy. Also, if parking is too much of a hassel, the Hollywood Bowl offers several shuttles for two dollars from several set Park-And-Go lots located around Los Angeles. Definately look into spending next summer at the Hollywood Bowl.

For a great markety offering food (often organic) at incredible quality - shop at Whole Foods. The prices reflect the quality, so there is some to a lot of price inflation to the food's mainstream supermarket counterparts; however, they do have great selection. As far as store prepared food, Whole Foods offers some of the best. I absolutely recommend going in for a meal from the deli, sushi bar, teryiaki counter, pizza station, or extensive salad bar. They offer some great harder to find foods in the peak of their form. The prepared food is always delicious. For produce, not all of the food is organic, but a good portion is. Their produce is again, somewhat to much higher priced than that at a large supermarket. They do offer great items in bulk as well - such as beans, grains, oats, etc. Definately stop by Whole Foods for a quick bite for lunch there or to take out. It will definately satisfy.

The Westwood Farmer's Market offers some great fresh produce - some of which is at great discounted prices. Not all the food is organic, however, plenty is. Also, there is much more than just great produce. There are plenty of great prepared dishes from various international regions. Asian and South American food are someo of the highlights. Most of the people working the Westwood Farmer's Market are extremely helpful and friendly. You are often able and encouraged to sample the various produce. I believe the Westwood Farmer's Market lasts from about one o'clock in the afternoon until sundown. That is plenty of time to set aside and schedule a visit. In season produce is of course a plus. Not only is produce in season at the peak of taste, it is also at some of the best prices around town. If you question it, there is a Ralphs directly adjacent to the Westwood Farmer's Market. Go in and compare price of in season produce. The Farmer's Market is a nice afternoon experience with great food.

If visiting or living in Los Angeles a trip to the LA Farmers' Market on 3rd and Fairfax is an incredible way to spend the afternoon or evening. It boasts many little, one of a kind, food stands offering delicious and authentic food from all parts of the world - the Middle East, New Orleans, Korea, French (awesome crepes), Mexican, etc. Also, the market has some great butchers (the long one on the East end is great and has pretty good prices), candies and treats (the ice cream always is so fragrant), and great produce. Also, in season produce is always priced better than any other chain market around. Check ahead if the Farmers' Market is having any special performances (during the summer they often do night musical performances that make the evening even more fun). Finally, the market is located right next to the Grove - a nice compliment to the market. The Grove has many big chain shops - clothing including Banana Republic and Lucky Jeans and other shops including an Apple Store and a huge Barnes and Nobles - as well as a nice movie theatre. It also is just a nice walk around the beautiful fountains or neat old trolley that rolls up and down the Grove. Overall, it is a fun day trip for all.

The best movie house in Los Angeles. The Bridge in Culver City gives the Arclight a close run, however, I always end up picking the Arclight over all others. The incredible seating - with more than ample room, the beautiful picture and unbelievable sound quality, the delicious carmel popcorn, the great selection of movies (ranging from big budget blockbusters to extremely limited releases), the special event screenings, and above all, the Arclight Cinemrama Dome. The Cinerama Dome offers the greatest movie viewing experience in Los Angeles. Better than an I-Max, the Dome offers a wider, surrounding visual experience. In addition to a more all-encompassing screen, the sound is unbelievable. The Dome is a separate building from the rest of the Arclight theatres, and therefore has is its own organism. Sound echoes throughout the Dome clearer and louder than anywhere else. The seats are all comfortable and good viewing. And the organization of ordering a specific seat location (like at a performing arts theatre or sporting event) provide a guaranteed seat together as a group. Do enroll in their Arclight Members program in order to receieve member points for all money spent at the theatre or online for tickets. Eventually these points can be exchanged for concessions or tickets. All around a great way to experience a great movie.

For local suburb theatres, the Edwards in Calabasas is a great place for a movie. It offers great stadium seating, various screens with different types of movies, great sounds, great picture quality. The theatre does have advertisements still. This is a big hassel for those who are anxious to get directly to the movie. A typical screening will hold several trailers as well as several commercials. The theatre is also located in the Calabasas Commons which is a great place to spend a night out. It has restaurants of various scale and price, a big Barnes and Noble book store, and other stores. There is also plenty of outdoor seating on benches and tables. The theatree is pretty clean and, again, does have good picture and sound quality. Also stadium seating is great to have. Ticket prices are expensive, however, they are no different than the average price of other theatres - about ten dollars. For a nice movie, go to the Calabasas Regal Movie Theatres.
