I have played golf at Newcastle many times (both Coal Creek and China Creek) and have eaten at the restaurant many times as well. The views from Newcastle are as good as it gets. The club house is also top notch in all respects. The courses are well kept and challenging with a reasonable pace of play. The greens fees are a bit high by comparison for the Pacific Northwest ($160 during peak times for Coal Creek, $110 for China Creek), but that's a matter of perspective. The only real downside to Newcastle Golf is the consistent horrendous service. The restaurant is touch and go and depends on how busy they are and which member of the wait staff you get. The golf course on the other hand is quite poorly run with respect to service to golfers. For $160 I have high expectations for service, with an organized approach to time management, filled refreshments, functioning water faucets, knowledgeable pro shop employees, etc. Unfortunately they are 1 for 10 with me on those items and many others. That said, the golf course is a great track and if you want to take someone from out of town for a wonderful view and some nice food then this is a good option. I suspect they will eventually get the service thing right, but they have a long way to go.

We have been frequenting the Whistle Stop Alehouse for nearly 10 years. The original location (across from the dinner train depot) was flush with history so we were afraid they would lose some of that character with the move, but the food is still great (actually better), the menu is bigger, and there are more seats for happy patrons. Expect a great beer selection, friendly people and great food. Jeff (the owner) will tell you they have great bacon, but that's not my thing. And yes, although it was originally a pub they are well setup for kids.

It's great to have another alternative on the Island. Bennett's offers three high quality meals a day and has a deli counter. The food is good and includes specialties from sister companies Pasta & Co. and Beecher's Handmade Cheese. Deli counter prices are comparable to what you see elsewhere, although Bennett's is a bit proud of the dine-in menu. All in all, the Island needs more alternatives and I, for one, am happy to see Bennett's here.

These guys make a great pie! The service is also quite good and relatively quick. Look for their specials that are usually attached to the menu. If you're looking for delivery, Sahara is a staple.

Seven Stars with its new location is a good option if you're looking for convenience. If you're looking for even more convenience, then have them deliver it--anywhere on the Island. Last time I did it was free and included a couple bonus spring rolls. I wouldn't take Chinese friends there since the International District is just 10 minutes away, but the convenience is hard to beat if you're looking for something easy.

Finally a good weekend breakfast option. The renovated Islander with its fancy bench seats, new bar and plasma TV are quite a contrast from the days of yore. The lunch and dinner menu is great. I have yet to have a bad meal there and the service is great. For those of you who can appreciate a harder pub tradition try the bangers and mash. Delicious! Best yet they have a weekend breakfast menu that is pretty darned good, and since it's a restaurant and not just a bar the kids can join you. Sorry Roanoke, but the Islander has you on that one.

Roberto's has good basic Italian food, including the daily specials which are always led by cheese bread and a cheesy dinner salad. The pizza is actually quite tasty. The service on the other hand is....well, not so good. After eating there 30+ times (yes, there are few options on Mercer Island) I can say that I have a good feel for the lack of service. They are typically slow to take your order, slow to bring the food, slow to refill the drinks and slow to take your money. That said, if you are in absolutely no rush and have a low service expectation then this is your place! :)
