this place has every kind of shape and every kind of style in natural stone beads. i love especially their selection of turquoise which i haven't seen the likes of in any other brick-and-mortar store. prices are quite reasonable, especially considering that their selection is so vast that you're bound to find quite a few gems (pun intended). they also have beautiful and wide-ranging pearl strands, and the selection of stringing materials and jewelry parts is pretty good too. the staff is sort of cold and a little weird, but who needs staff? you do it all yourself really.

i come here for all ribbon, button, and other such needs because their selection is simply unbeatable. they have every possible kind of color, style, fabric, width, and pattern that you could ever dream of, and the prices are amazingly low for a store that i bet could gouge through the roof (after all, what they have no one else stocks). there's nowhere better in all of manhattan, and now that they are expanding the store, i don't think anyone could even catch up enough to be a distant second place.

this place pretends to be a nice bead store, and the space really is beautifully designed, but honestly, you can't only offer twenty pathetic styles of beads, mark them up four thousand percent and then pretend to be a credit to the bead industry. i was incredibly disappointed also by the strangely condescending tone of the salesperson, who somehow refused to believe that yes, i am a regular bead store customer, and yes, i have actually made jewelry already. she proceeded to attempt to show me how to string beads anyway (um, yeah, you put the string through the hole, highly complex).

there's jewelry, blown glass, crafted wooden household decor, and did i mention the jewelry? some really amazingly beautful pieces that would look lovely and unique on anyone - i just wish they were more affordable! the pieces are made by local artists and quite a few of them are so gorgeous that it's sad to leave the store without having bought something. the collection changes frequently, so i recommend going often to see the new works - it's really worth it just for the visual beauty fix.

this is always a convenient, timely, safe, and courteous ride. only once did we try to take a regular cab to get to the airport in manhattan, and boy was it a disaster. from then on we've always called to arrange a tel aviv cab ahead of time and they are amazingly always on time both to pick up and to get you there - traffic or no traffic. the drivers are much more normal/relaxed/capable than the regular new york cabbies, at least in terms of avoiding near death experiences, and the cars are clean and comfortable when you're stressed about the traveling itself (i always am).

ever see people wearing what look like incredibly comfortable, but also incredibly stylish shoes? things that look like the must have been designed in europe or japan somewhere? not air jordans? well, this is the store where you can get them. they have the latest greatest offerings from all the companies that actually care whether you will be crippled at age 40 from wearing high heels that pinch your feet all day long and are working to create alternatives that don't look like uggs. seriously, excellent shoes, and a knowledgeable and pretty friendly staff.

another wonderful little gift store that has unusual, funky designs. they have a jewelry department and a household department, and both feature the work of local designers and artists. the person who buys for the store has a really great eye - every time i go in, i like pretty much a good eighty percent of everything i see, which is a high percentage. as far as service goes, my mom got her wedding rings there and they were incredibly helpful with figuring out sizing, cleaning the rings through the years, and re-sandblasting them to restore their original finish.

i was really surprised to find a store like this in the mall - after all, it has a relatively unusual collection of jewelry, home decor things, and other crafty/arty objects perfect for anyone whose ideal item doesn't come from the gap. but the store exists in both the court and the plaza sides of the mall, and their selection is constantly changing and evolving to the point that i make sure i stop by every time i find myself in the mall in order to pick up a few items to save as gifts for whatever occasion might arise.

the name is strange and i guess intentionally kind of dirty-sounding, but what this store sells is slightly upmarket beanbag chairs, beanbag beds, and beanbags in other shapes that defy characterization. basically, it's a place that has leather and suede and velvet beanbags that pretend to be acceptable furniture. maybe if you are still in high school. maybe if you live in your college dorm. but really, never ever in a house! this is just a misguided idea.

... and a knowledgeable and wonderful staff. i tried on a zillion pairs of glasses, looking for ones that were the most lightweight, and in the area, only this store carried the ones i ended up getting (not only super lightweight, but also flexible and not made out of glass - not even the lenses). the staff worked with me for an hour, never getting annoyed at my inability to make decisions and to constantly second-guess myself. they also didn't do that frustrating thing of offering glasses to try on that had features i clearly said i didn't want (so many stores do just that!).
