Union restaurant deserves more credit than it's been getting lately. We discovered Union when we were living in temporary housing downtown and visited their bar frequently. They make great martini's and the bar is small and quaint. The restaurant we were a bit skeptical about but were pleasantly surprised by the food. They offer a pre-fixe menu for $50 plus another $30 if you want wine pairings. It's a great deal for the 7 courses you get. Their wine selection is top notch and the sommelier is very knowledgeable. For those of you with Herb Farm on your list, I'd pick Union first. It's significantly more economical and delivers even better fare.
The sad part about this restaurant is that lately it's been nearly empty. Construction in and around 1st and Union isn't helping and each time we've been we feel like it could be our last visit. If you haven't been and are looking for a solid gourmet experience, check it out. As soon as the Seattle art Museum and Ritz (I think) are finished with construction, this will be a much better spot. I only hope they can pay the rent until then.

Vios in North Capital hill has a great pit for kids and also has good food. I'm not so sure it's kid focused as much as it is a place that doesn't force parents to eat only cheese pizza and finger food. I like this place because you can select your wine off of their shelf and they'll cork it for you and you don't pay the typical 50-100% mark-up that most restaurants charge. The pit is in the corner of the restaurant and has toys and seating all around the outside so you can enjoy your meal while your little one plays. As far as food, I recommend the lamb chops and hummus plate. Very tasty.

Less than 2 hours from Seattle, Steven's pass is a great day ski trip. With recent snowfall the mountain had a nice layer of fresh powder on top of groomed trails which made for fast enjoyable runs. The only drawback is that the mountain doesn't offer too many challenges in terms of varied terrain-you'll probably need to head to a bigger resort for that. The facilities however were on par with larger resorts. They had a few casual full service restaurants which was nice so you don't have to fight it out for space lik most of the typical cafeteria style establishments at ski resorts.

I recently visited Anton's Hair Company in Bellevue with a friend who was in need of a wig (due to upcoming chemo treatments). It's generally not good news when you need to make a trip to Anton's but he makes an unpleasant experience as nice as possible. Anton himself is from a long line of wig makers and his expertise shows. He now has his son working with him and the two of them do amazing work. He first schedules a consultation (before you lose or need to shave your hair) and examines the texture and color of your hair. He tries to use as much of your original hair in the wig as possible and then uses donors' real hair to fill in the gaps. He is also very knowledgeable about the chemo process and was able to tell my friend exactly when she'd lose her hair based on the drug she was going to be on. He recommends shaving your head before it starts to fall out as that seems to be less tramatic plus he can then use as much of it as possible.
Well the final results were amazing. You'd never know my friend had a wig and after getting it she went to her regular hair salon to get it styled while she was wearing it and the hairdresser didn't even know it was a wig. I would highly recommend Anton's Hair Company for all your wig needs!

After years of faithfully patronizing Teriyaki Bowl in Madison Park, I give Eastlake Teriyaki just 3 stars. While it does the job for lunch, the quality does not live up to my Teriyaki expectations....
After years of faithfully patronizing Teriyaki Bowl in Madison Park, I give Eastlake Teriyaki just 3 stars. While it does the job for lunch, the quality does not live up to my Teriyaki expectations. I've had the chicken and beef Teriyaki and both options lack the flavor and quality I've seen at other establishments.

My favorite dishes on a recent trip were their signature croquetas (appetizer) and the tenderloin & lamb from the carne selections. We skipped dessert and opted instead for a cheese plate which is an a la carte selection with a heavy focus on goat cheeses.
The only drawback would be price. I found it a little expensive for what you got. Tenderloin (tapas style-about 3-4 ounces) was about $17 and you need 2-3 tapas per person depending on how hungry you are. A few tapas and your bill gets steep. Fortunately the wine selection was big and they have many moderate bottles which balanced things out a little.

I really enjoy going to Latona by Green Lake. The menu is a bit broader than standard pub fare including tacos (chicken, beef or pork), duck confit salad and beef pot pie. I especially like their greek plate with hummus, kalamata olives feta, roasted red peppers and more. On a recent visit I ordered the burger which was good and served with a fresh salad--not greasy at all.
Oh and the beer selection is great and they rotate new selections and specials regularly.

I visited the derm center at the UW Roosevelt campus recently for a general derm check up. I was randomly referred to Dr. Nghiem through the UW admin which is always a little scary but he was great and thorough. I wanted a general skin evaluation to see how much trouble I was in from all those sunburns as a kid and he was very thorough and professional. Additionally he brought with him 2 residents which some people would be put off by but I really enjoy teaching facilities because as he explained what he was looking at to the residents, I was able to also jump in ask questions and overall had a better understanding of my own skin. As a side note, I asked the nurse when I checked in what Dr. Nghiem's reputation was and she said that while he was new to UW, someone had flown from LA that day just to see him so it seems his reputation is solid.

This past weekend I was on a hunt to find some new ski boots. I thought I was hitting the sales appropriately but quickly realized that most of the decent outfitters were low on inventory. I started first at REI and had excellent service despite being very busy. The sales woman was very knowledgeable and even wrote down the styles she felt would be best for my foot that they didn't carry or had run out of. I next hit Fiorini's which was completely sold out of my size-although they were very helpful. I begrudgingly crossed I-90 (520 was closed) and went to Sturtevant's. They had plenty of inventory in my size so I was able to find a pair of boots I was happy with but the sales person was only moderately helpful. He really couldn't tell me what the boots should feel like and kept defering to me saying "it's really up to you". I was looking for him to give me parameters to better make my decision (let's face it, ski boots aren't comfortable in general right?). Anyway, despite finding a boot that fit, I gave them a 3 rating based on service.

Teriyaki Bowl is a place that my husband and I get take out from nearly every week. It's convenient (located on Madison and Lake Washington BLVD) and has quality chicken and beef. I usually get the chicken and beef combination which comes with a small side salad and plenty of meet. I especially like their new menu which features many different teriyaki options including noodles, nice and meat and seafood dishes.
