Harold's Lighting in Wallingford is a great place to look for lamps, lights, lampshades, and a few other fun things (I noticed a great fireplace screen).
Apparently, Harold's has been in the business since 1957.
In addition to selling lamps, lights, and lampshades, they do repair and have all kinds of other lighting-related services.
I was really impressed with the selection and the prices were very good for the quality.
They are located right on 45th in the heart of Wallingford.

This is one of the first places I go to find a gift. As an added bonus, the two shops adjacent have some of the best cards and gifts in Seattle.
The owners have great taste and really manage to cull the best.

Don't even think about going to Sleep Country or any of those other sleezy places.
I bought my mattress at Better Bilt Furniture and I love it. Both the mattress and the price were great.
The mattress that you loved at Macy's or wherever you saw it will be so much less expensive through Better Bilt that you will be shocked. They can order pretty much any mattress you want, or you can buy one of the half dozen that they keep in the back of their warehouse for you to try out. They keep a selection of mattresses they think are best. I bought one of those.
These guys are hidden away in a warehouse just a block or two off of Nickerson at the base of Queen Anne (relatively near the Fremont bridge).
In contrast to the "used car salesman" approach at most mattress stores, they are so low-pressure at Better Bilt that they ignored me completely until I asked for assistance. Once I asked, I got great advice from the most knowledgeble man I had yet encountered.
They have great mattresses for fantastic prices.
They also have all kinds of furniture, carpeting, etc. The quality and prices are great for everything. They don't advertise at all and most of the people there are designers since they are "in the loop" and know these best places to shop.

I have never used Reliable Movers.
I am posting this because no one seems to ever have a good experience with movers and this is the one and only moving company that has ever received a glowing recommendation from anyone I know.
A friend recommended them to me AFTER my move, so I have not tried them. This is who I would call if I were moving.
If anyone uses them, please post a report about your experience. It sure would be nice to hear a recommendation for a moving company.
Thanks

I would recommend them to move boxes and furniture, but in a controlled environment. Please don't trust them with your heirlooms or your perfectly organized collection of anything.
Starving Students works like a referal service (day labor). It is the luck of the draw who you get on your job.
They did some packing for me - it involved stuffing any random thing into or on top of a box and covering it in tape. When the boxes were covered in tape, that was okay, but mostly they covered my things in tape. I am donating a lot of things I planned to keep before they got all crammed and taped.
They charge by the hour from the time they leave their garage to the time they arrive back, so you will pay less if you live near their office and if you give them very specific driving directions or have them follow you in your car from place A to B. Don't expect them to have any tools - even a map or a box cutter.
Think of them like U-haul if hiring strong guys with the truck were one of the extra options. I was worried that they would be slow since they are paid by the hour, but they were lightening fast.
I have no idea about most of the people who work for starving students The two guys who came to my house were nice, respectful, honest, and fast. They envisioned their job as quickly moving things from A to B. They clearly do not own things that need special care and did not seem to understand the concept.
These guys were not students, but the company would be perfect to hire if you are a starving student.
If you are thinking of moving yourself, be sure to consider the $50+/day for U-haul, the time you will spend, and the inevitable back pain.
But also check out any movers before you hire them.
Starving Student's service was mediocre - much better than Graebel movers, who charge a fortune.

Wine snobs will love the choices they have made and laypeople will enjoy the friendly reception to naive questions.
I even brought my Swiss friends here when they were seeking specialty wines to use for, and drink with, fondue. They were quite happy with the place.

Dana's refers people to clean your house - or do anything else within reason.
If you are stuck and need someone to meet the cable guy, or you need help unpacking after a move, or whatever - you can call Dana's.
You can hire someone for a one-time service or set up a regular housecleaning service.
Because it is a referal service, it may possibly attract people who are not planning to do this forever, but at least when someone leaves, Dana's calls and has a new person all picked out, which takes away all the hassle.
It also means you can schedule a regular service (weekly, monthly), and then make any changes you want when you are traveling, having a party - whatever. Dana's will find that person a filler job so that his/her income is not harmed by your schedule.
They charge for four or eight hours of work (8-noon or 1 - 5) and ask that you leave a list of priorities.
You can be home or not. Most people are not home when the person comes.
We have used three different people through Dana's and all three have been great.
I was told by a friend that they are the cheapest in the business. I don't know whether that is true. They charge about $75 for four hours, depending on where you live and how often you use their services.

Whenever I want a car, I just call or go online and book a car near me to use for the number of hours I would like to use it.
It is a whole lot cheaper than owning another car, as you do not pay for gas, insurance, or maintenance. The cars are all new and clean.
You just pick one up at the place where you reserved it and then leave it at the same place.
When I am out and realize that I will not get it back by the appointed time, I just call and extend the time. As long as no one else has reserved that time, you can extend it. So far, I have been able to extend the time every time.

When I went to buy a mattress, I discovered a whole, sleezy world out there. Why do people make fun of used car salesman when mattress salesman are so much worse?
Then I found Better Bilt Furniture. A no-frills warehouse hidden at the northern base on Queen Anne (near SPU & Fremont bridge). I bought a fantastically comfortable mattress for about a tenth of the price charged by those sleazy chain stores.
When you walk into Better Bilt, expect them to just let you wander. They are so opposed to the hard sell, that they will probably ignore you completely until you ask someone for assistance. It is a refreshing change.
They sell all kinds of furniture, upholstery, mattresses, carpeting, etc.
