Long wait, maybe not worth it?

For those of us who loved the previous incarnation of the Boat Street Cafe (then actually on Boat Street in the University District), the past two years have been a long wait. I loved their sandwiches, brunch and bread pudding and could not wait until they found a new spot to open up in. The wait came to an end (finally) on October 21st 2005 when they opened their new location at the edge of Belltown and Queen Anne. I finally got to go there for lunch yesterday and I've got to say that the wait might not have been worth it. The new space is not anywhere near as wonderful as the old one, but no one really expected that it would be. What surprised me most was the staff - we were seated and given our menus. When we tried to order, we were told that they had forgotten to tell us that (at noon!) they were out of one of two hot items on the menu. Okay....so we ordered old favorites (although they did take one of my favorite sandwiches off the menu) and they were very good. After lunch, the moment I had been waiting for - we ordered bread pudding....only to be told that they were out of this as well! I know that new restaurants often take a while to figure out how much of any dish they should have on hand, but their bread pudding is their signature, and at noon (they only open at 10am!) they should not be out of it. And, if they are out of something, some warning would have been appreciated. I'll try again in a few weeks, and hopefully the kinks will have been worked out by then.
