Are you an Elliott Smith fan? Then you’ll probably enjoy this album from Heatmiser, Smith’s band before he went solo. Even though I really dug Heatmiser, this one slipped under my radar until recently when I heard "See You Later."
Said track includes everything I love about Elliott Smith—sadly beautiful pop songs with memorable hooks and Beatlesque harmonies. But then, this isn’t a Smith plug. You’re already a fan, right? I’m just hipping you to a great album you might have overlooked.
Cuts like "See You Later," "Plainclothes Man" and "Untitled/Half Right" are Smith classics. Plus, you get to hear Elliott rocking out in all the grunge/punk/pop glory that was Heatmiser.
I’d conclude by saying something about a "lost" Elliott Smith disc. But that would be disrespecting the rest of the band. So instead I’ll just say, pick up this kick-ass album from Heatmiser.

I’m glad I don’t have much experience with television repair places, but after going to teletron, I feel confident in giving them some props.
I have an older set and wasn't sure if it was better to replace or repair. The teletron guys were pleasant to deal with and seemed quite knowledgeable of my particular vintage.
they guessed to replace my set would be about $150 (it’s not a large screen) and to repair would be about $85. I choose the latter. one, to put off a purchase decision and two, teletron endorsed it as a quality set that had a lot of years left in it.
their turn-around was two days and their estimate was accurate. now I’m happily watching a clear picture with the knowledge I saved a few bucks and kept my tv out of a landfill for a few more years.

If you’re looking for cheap yoga, check out Mind and Body on 21st and Union. An hour of yoga there is just $5 and all classes are drop-in. I’m just beginning to practice regularly so I can’t speak for more serious students, but the instructors I’ve had have all been very good.
All ability classes are held Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. An intermediate class is held on Sundays. Come early to this one though, because it can get quite crowded. There's also a number of pilates classes offered throughout the week.
Hardcore yoga types might be left wanting more challenge or number of classes. But, if you’re just beginning or looking to get a good stretch in, Mind & Body is the spot.

Even I (the cooking challenged) can make a delicious home-made pizza with DeLaurenti’s frozen pizza dough. It’s available at their shop in the market and only costs a few bucks.
What you get is a palm-sized ball of dough that thaws in about an hour. Take a few minutes to stretch into a circular shape and you’re ready to add the toppings. This is where my expertise ends. But after the toppings, stick it in the oven for about 20 minutes or so.
And no matter what you put on top, you’re pizza is going to rock because the crust comes out fresh and flavorful in that slightly bready way. Plus, you just made it yourself so you know all the ingredients are super fresh.
You like pizza. Who doesn't? So try making it at home with DeLaurenti’s frozen pizza dough. It’s really easy.

Film fans should check out The Northwest Film Forum on 12th ave on Capitol Hill. First off, it’s a great space to see movies. The theater is carved out of an old warehouse building complete with exposed brick walls. And second, their selection of movies is definitely an alternative to the usual Hollywood fare. Actually, it’s even an alternative to the movies you might see at the Egyptian or Seven Gables.
TNFF is not strictly a theater. They bill themselves as a film collective complete with workshops and rental equipment. And as such, they feature filmmakers working outside the usual distribution channels. Plus, they’ll throw in some classics long gone from the big screen.
Their films usually run for about a week, so they always have something new coming up. Of course, this also means you have a short window to catch your movie of choice. I recently caught a documentary about the rock group, The Flaming Lips then missed a showing of Jack Nicholson’s Chinatown.
So if you’re looking for alternative film, I’d recommend keeping an eye on their calendar (it’s online). Chances are you’ll find something you won’t see in any other theater around town. And for post-movie discussions, there are plenty of great bars and cafes in the neighborhood.

I'm not qualified to verify these claims, but I will admit it's pretty tasty. and it's in a cool, laid back space on 3rd ave, right across from the bon. plus, if you want to get your smoke on, they have hookahs. visit in the evening and you might get in on some karaoke. c'mon, with a slogan like that it's worth a visit.

It’s a movie theatre. It’s a restaurant. It’s a cool neighborhood hangout. Central Cinema has opened a funky joint to watch films and slurp down pizza and beer.
The space is well designed for viewing and eating. Each pair of seats has a table in front in which to place your food and beverage. And the seating lay-out makes it easy for waitstaff to maneuver around with your order.
I will say the pizza is a work in progress. The dough was chewy and tasty, but the toppings were average and there was a distinct lack of cheese and sauce. On the plus side, the beer was cold and delicious. Especially when paired with gourmet popcorn. Ours was covered in brewer’s yeast.
The film selections are second run, and tend to lean toward the alternative/cult/classic side. Most show for a week or less, so make sure you check their website to know what’s coming.
If you go, consider arriving a little early to get a good seat and place your order. We arrived late and had to sit in the front row while waiting half the movie for our food to show up. (They did placate us with popcorn.)
Movie and beer has long been a winning combination. Now you can have both at Central Cinema.

check out this tiny shop for a funky selection of shoes and outstanding customer service. I came for the blundstone boots, and despite (or maybe because of) a total monopoly of the seattle market, 5 doors up provided an excellent shopping experience
I was really struck by how pressure-free and cool the staff was. blundstones fit a little different than most shoes, and 5 doors up has a generous return policy and encourage you to wear the boots around the house before committing to a size
they carry many more styles besides blundstones, and all seem to fall into that classic/stylish/comfortable category
If I was able to score my shoes on sale, I would have given 5 doors up five stars. but just as well, I’d recommend them to anyone looking for some new kicks

If you have a sneaker fetish like I do, savor a trip to Sneaker City on Pike Street. True, vintage sneakers have gotten so popular these days you can buy them at any mall. But, to gaze at Sneaker City’s cramped selection of new and old school Nikes, Adidas, Pumas, New Balance, even Timberlands is a treat for any aficionado.
Plus, the place has a great vibe. You can tell their customers love their sneakers by listening to the passionate discussions of color, trim, make and model.
I would say their prices are in line with what you would find anywhere. And many of the vintage kicks are marked "on sale" with $5 taken off the listed price.
So take your sneaker buying habit to this hole-in-the-wall, mom-n-pop operation. You’re guaranteed to find the latest Jordans, the oldest Jordans and everything in between. Conveniently, if you need something to compliment your newly purchased Air Force 1’s, Leroy’s Men’s Clothing is just down the street.
