Whether you order several appetizers and mix them or a large plate, I have yet to try anything on the menu that has disappointed me! Plus, bread comes with pretty much everything and it's that home-made, fluffy and wonderful pita that you just can't find anywhere else.
I highly recommend this place, it's the best!

The best concept ever, TWO HAPPY HOURS EVERY NIGHT! You heard correctly, every day they have a happy hour from 5-7pm.... BUT, Sunday-Wednesday they have a second one from 11pm-1am and Thursday-Saturday from 11:30pm-12:30am.
Now, I'm sure you're asking WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?! Well I'll tell you. It means $3 frozen margaritas, any flavour! These aren't just regular margaritas, they're some of the best I've ever had! Strong but tasty, and just the right texture of smooth and icy.
Although I recommend going to the bar to drink, The Heights also offers a beautiful roofdeck and better than average food, also affordable.
Up near Columbia University, expect a decent number of students to populate the bar, but it's not overwhelming as they tend to be some of the better-behaved university students in the city.

Depending on what you wand to accomplish, Fromex can either be very helpful, or very frustrating. There are about 9 or 10 locations throughout the city and they don't all offer the same services. Also, the degree of helpfulness among the employees is really a crapshoot.... some are great, some will ignore you. However, there is one service that they offer that I happen to think is the best deal in town:
*IF* you are shooting with a film camera and you want your pictures scanned and burned to a CD, they will develop your film and put your pictures in high resolution files on a CD for less than $10 including tax. If this is something you do often, you can join they annual club-card which gives you a 10-15% discount on their services.
Fromex also has the capacity to develop and print your black and white film, although I do believe they send all those orders to the UES location on 86th street. But given the little photo places all around the city where you never know what you'll get for their exorbitant prices, Fromex is a decent gamble.

Despite the bland image that the name "Rice" might conjure up, this restaurant is anything but! One of the more creative of the Asian-fusion themed restaurants, this quiet but popular place is vegetarian friendly and great fun! There's surprising originality in the menu and a great option of mixing and matching between entrées and accompanying rices.
The place is minuscule, but then again, so are the tabs! You won't spend much more than $20 on a meal for two including drinks. For dinnertime, expect to wait a bit. But they do offer shelter next door at their take-out location which has places to sit and groovy music.
I highly recommend Rice, a good time and it won't empty your wallet.

This brand new café/restaurant is the best thing to happen to 9th Avenue this year! It's a tiny but clean place called Empanada Mama which serves fantastically tasty empanadas at more than fair prices. Most empanadas range from $1.75-$3 depending on the filling, and the fillings range from all types of vegetables (Greek spinach and feta pie, broccoli and cheese, etc) to meats, seafood, and the ever popular dessert empanadas.
They also sell other types of tapas, blended fruit drinks, and some beer/wine type beverages. While there are some favourites, I haven't tried anything there I didn't like.
I don't eat out often, but this place I will keep going back to! Best empanadas in this hemisphere.....

Hi Gordon,
Maybe this is too forward, but I'm a freelance photographer (website is www.soleafoto.com BUT is under construction for about 2 weeks) and have experience with many types of shoots. I can send you samples if interested. I also used to work in an elementary school so I'm used to working with kids.
If you are interested, we might be a good match?
cheers,
Ashley
