I belong to a federal credit union in LA, but there isn't a branch near me in Long Beach. The LBS credit union on 10th is the closest federal credit union to me, and federal credit unions are supposed to provide some of the same services to members of other credit unions. LBS will do this as the law mandates it, but there is always some kind of a hassle about it. They almost invariably want to put a hold on the checks I present for deposit, even when they are payroll checks and/or are for small amounts. The branch on Atlantic and San Antonio is better, but by that point I may as well go to downtown LA. Actually, most of the time it is ends up being easier to go to my home agency 30 miles away rather than deal with this sourpuss institution down the street from me.

Pet Partners carries a large selection of pet products at acceptable prices, but I don't enjoy shopping there and seldom give them my business. The store is really too small for all of the goods and services they are attempting to purvey, and the staff is too condescending, almost hectoring, when they talk to you. The hours aren't bad, and they do have a lot of merchandise, so I do sometimes go there. Just not if I can help it.

Cal Bowl is a terrible place to bowl. What few balls there are are all in terrible shape--I never found one that I really liked, they were all to big or too small, and they were all chipped--and other equipment is run down, too. The building itself doesn't seem that old, so the upkeep going into the place must be minimal. Worst of all, though, the patrons there are not serious about the game. I'm not a regular bowler any more and I'm not trying to be all high horse about it, but things like bowlers in adjacent lanes not respecting basic bowling etiquette really ruins your night at the lanes. The only good thing I can say is that beer is cheap there, but when the bar turns into a karaoke club it is time to go home.

I worked here for a couple years in college. It's a great library, and I was proud to be a part of it. But I know all the dirty little secrets of it, too. Let's just say if you don't need any of the books there, avoid deck 8. Just don't go there. Also, be careful on 2a. But do go. It's a great library, an old and worn but majestic building with a huge collection including some special holdings.

Most of the Columbus Metropolitan Library branches have a meeting room. You should be able to register for one if you purposes are not for profit. You may have to put up a deposit against damages, but I don't believe there is an actual fee for using the room. They are in separate rooms, so it's not like you are going to be interfering with the people who are in the stacks trying to read or using the PCs. Plus, you'll be in the library and get to check out the books and audiovisual collections, which are quite good.

It's been about a decade since I lived in Columbus, though I've been back several times. Quite a lot has changed, the city has been cleaned up a lot. The cool neighborhood when I was there was North Campus, just north of OSU and just south of Clintonville. Clintonville was more of a neighborhood to own a home, and North Campus more for older students and full-time bohemians. One of the things that made it cool was the nexus of the Blue Danube Restaurant, the nightclub Stache & Little Brother's, Dick's Den (another bar) and Monkey's Retreat, an underground comix and book store. Monkey's is a great source for underground literature, and the people there are great.
RIght around the time I moved, Stache's and Monkey's got evicted from that location and they moved to the Short North/Garden District area. That neighborhood is pretty cool in terms of hanging around--good music clubs, galleries, dining--but it used to be really seedy, and I can't think that it has been totally gentrified. Of course, if you are from SF, you will be used to that. Victorian Village is just west of there, and has some really nice homes. Like Clintonville, it offers access to a hip neighborhood without being seedy itself. German Village is a nice area, close to downtown, but Victorian Village splits the difference between downtown and campus and you will want to spend time in both areas. Victorian Village has Goodale Park in the middle of it, too, so that's a nice thing to have.
If you want something that is a little more suburban, Clintonville is a good choice and you should also look at Grandview, just a few miles west of Victorian Village. Grandview has a nice little downtown with cool shops and restaurants while keeping a wholesome midwestern town feel. The best pizza place in town--Rottolos--and the best liquor store--Gentile's--are there. There is also Iuka Ravine, which is a really pretty little oasis just east of campus. The Ravine is safe, but you might want to be careful walking more than a couple blocks in any direction there.
That's the rundown. I literally cannot endorse any other parts of town, unless you are young enough not to mind living in the loud neighborhood immediately off-campus. But any of those places should be good.

I'm a huge Parliament-Funkadelic fan. I love their music, and I've always dug George Clinton's crazy hair. I always wanted hair like that. Well, I was talking about that to somebody, and they said if I really wanted to look like that I should go to Purple Circle in Los Feliz. They do really creative things with hair. I got colorful weaves like George and eventually got a dread perm there--with the weaves in my naturally curly hair, I couldn't really comb it but with their help I could at least get the locks to form coherently. I went there for a couple years and they always did fun things with my hair. It's expensive, expect to pay at least $50 and probably more, but they are nice and really know what they are doing.

The Los Angeles Baroque Orchestra is often referred to as a well-kept secret in Los Angeles, but I actually think their profile is deservedly low. I'm not going to totally disparage them, they serve a purpose by performing the baroque repertoire and they aren't all bad. But, man, I'll never forget seeing them at the Watercourt in downtown LA when they played Handel's "Water Music." Striving to be authentic, they used period French horns that were valveless rather than the kind that have been refined since Handel's day. Now, I admire their attempt to recreate the music the way it was written, but the horn players were not able to play the instruments in tune. It defeated the purpose; Handel didn't write the horn parts to be flat, I'm pretty sure, and I think playing them that way is a greater sin than using modern instruments would've been. That was a free show and it was still entertaining, but I can't imagine paying to hear this orchestra.

I lived down the street from Rubbish for five years. All I can say is they are true to their word. The store is full of its titular product. Expensive rubbish, at that. They mostly carry furniture from the 60s and 70s that you would expect to see in a Stanley Kubrick movie from that time period. If you want space-age kitsch, this is a good place to shop; but, for the kind of money they want, you could buy quality antique furniture instead.

Rolling Stones, all the way. I saw them at the Hollywood Bowl, which is my favorite place in L.A to see a big concert. The Stones still sounded good, too. Rough, but they made you want to move. The sound was excellent, and the venue is beautiful. The bandshell is attractive and you can't beat the location, right in the Hollywood Hills, one of a small handful of natural ampitheaters in the US. No disrepect to the Beatles, a great band, but they have been done for 35 years, and Paul McCartney is pretty corny left to his own devices. I love Ringo, but what can you say? The guy starred in Caveman.
