The Long Beach Airport is like a step back into the past. It is a fraction of the size of LAX, and it is proportionately easier to navigate in and out of. I fly out of there whenever I can. Because it is a small facility with only a limited number of flights, that is not as often as I would like. But I really like flying out of there. The lounge is cool, too.

The Museum of Latin American Art hosts an impressive collection of paintings, drawings, and sculpture from all over the Americas. The building is full of fine art and is expanding to become even larger. They feature good programs as well, from various folk music and dance programs to a summer program where Mexican murals are projected outdoors. Seedy neighborhood, but worth a visit. The cafe enjoys a good reputation. Free on Fridays.

The Queen Mary is one of the landmark attractions of Long Beach, along with one of its most notorious debtors. The famed ocean liner is a neat place to visit, and it is a definite must to take out of town visitors to the observation deck for a drink. Admission is $10, but free after dark. Parking is somewhere around $8, but there are free shuttles from downtown LB, so that's a good option. The rooms are cool, still vintage but clean. They are small, but it is a trip to be on the boat.

It sure is cool, it usually gets pretty misty at night. But it is a really nice venue for a concert. It is nestled up hill in Griffith Park and the acoustics are very good. Capacity is somewhere around 6,000, so when really big acts play there, it feels very intimate. Parking is a drag, though. I usually park in Los Feliz and walk. Otherwise, it's great.

I worked for a summer at Cooper Stadium in Columbus, selling tickets for the Columbus Clippers. What a great summer job. I got to hang out at the stadium and watch games and see the team practice. They are the AAA afiliate of the Yankees, so some pretty good players have gone through there--Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, and Jorge Posada are all players I've seen in Clipper uniforms, while Andruw Jones, Livan Hernandez and Woody Williams are some of the major league players I've seen on visiting teams. The tickets are cheap and the atmosphere is fun.

LA Opera has been around for 20 years and has already established itself as an important world opera company. Placido Domingo is the director and a frequent performer and conductor. Kent Nagano is the outgoing principal conductor, and he will be missed. The company does a good mix of standard repertoire and some more daring productions. They perform at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, which is still in pretty good shape. It gets a little hot up at the top, though, so it's worth the extra money to sit downstairs if you have it.

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is a perfectly nice museum and is well worth visiting. That said, it's not really good enough considering we are talking about Los Angeles County. The holdings are interesting, but not spectacular. The programming is good, though, especially the Friday night jazz series in the courtyard and the Sundays Live chamber music series, both free. They attract and curate good exhibitions as well.

While I can't give the Museum of Neon Art an entirely glowing review, I will say it is worth paying a quick visit to if you are near it in downtown L.A and have at least half an hour to kill. The holdings are not that extensive, so you can walk through it real quickly. They include a lot of commerical neon art from various vintages, and they also have more modern neon fine art which is sometimes interesting. The gift shop is well worth paying a visit to as well.

The Long Beach Ice Dogs are the AA affiliate of the Montreal Canadians. They play at the Long Beach Arena, a medium-sized facility that is conveniently located in downtown LB, though a bit outdated. The team is usually fairly mediocre, but the games are fun and the prices are right. I usually go to a handful of games every year, but attendence seems to suffer by the presence of 2 NHL teams within a forty minute drive of city limts.

The Long Beach Breakers of the Golden State League have been out of business for a couple years, having left town under a cloud of debt. Fortunately for us in Long Beach, another minor league team has come and taken their place. The Long Beach Armada play in the Golden Baseball league from June to August. Their home is the same as the Breakers was, beautiful Blair Field in LB's recreation park. The level of play sloppier than in higher levels of pro ball, true, but the intimacy of the 1,000 seat park and the beautiful setting--I love all the trees behind the fences, especially when it gets foggy at night--help make up for it. And it's a whole lot more affordable than MLB, that's for sure.
