Spaceland is one of LA's premiere rock clubs. They book a variety of touring acts, mostly indie rock and avant gardists of various stripes, and many local artists have made their names there. I used to know everyone there, but time moves on...anyway, good club. Monday nights, when there is no cover, is a big scene that you should check out. One warning, if a major artist is playing there, the lines go around the block and you'll need to get there early.

The Echo is a cramped nightclub where up and coming and occasionally arrived bands come to play. The name is a pun in a few different ways; it's in Echo Park, and it is also the sister club of Spaceland, so it is kind of a play on that. Though it gets very crowded, one thing that allieviates it a little bit is the patio in back where you can get a little air. They also have a monthly one tasting out back that is quite an amusing event.

I have to admit, I'm not that crazy about the El Rey Theatre. Sure, it's old and the neon signage is cool; I just don't think all that much of it as a place to see shows. It has a great big dance floor, but a lot of the shoes that end up being held there aren't really dance shows. There aren't enough places to sit; if you don't get there early enough to stake one of the few seats there are out, count on getting your dogs tired. It's not bad, it is certainly more intimate than a hockey rink or something, I just think it's overrated. They could stand to lower the prices on beer, too. They gouge you.

The Wine Country is another of Southern California's great wine shops. They have a very good selection of wines from all over the world and a very generous attitude about tasting them. I was in there recently and they had several Napa cabernets open for tasting; the bottle prices ranged from $20-$45, yet they were open for self-pouring, you could have any three on the house, or if you wanted to taste the whole course it was only $5. They also sell gourmet food items, and the staff is very helpful.

Hi-Time is perhaps the best liquor store I've ever been in. They have a staggering selection of beer, wine and hard alcohol. The building is somewhat unassuming from the outside, but it has a basement stocked with thousands of bottles of wine and the main floor features a huge selection of liquors. The prices are very reasonable--some bottles are quite expensive, of course, but those are great wines. If you are looking for bargains, there are plenty of those as well.

Golden Apple Comics is kind of a middle-ground comic store, by which I mean they carry and pay about equal attention to both mainstream and underground/alternative comics. In my experience, most stores seem to focus on either one or the other heavily and only carry a token selection of the other, but Golden Apple seems to try and do both. They also stock comic related items such as statuary and are a decent bookstore if you are interested in popular and fringe popular subjects. It's a little bigger than is strictly comfortable, but that's how they can be so comprehensive.

Ozzie Dots stands out among vintage clothing stores. So many of them are overpriced and mediocre, but Ozzie Dots is very reasonable. Most of their items are inexpensive and when they aren't that's because it's a really quality item. Their inventory also features a lot of costumes and novelty items along with more straightforward vintage clothing. Definitely a good place to shop for Halloween or a costume party.

San Pedro is an old naval town at the Southern tip of Los Angeles, and this is an old Navy complex that has been converted into an art colony. A friend of mine leases a room in one of the old barracks which he has converted into a recording studio and rents out fairly cheaply to help him pay his rent there. Other barracks are open for art classes as well as for visual artists and other musicians. It's in a very cool location overlooking the town of Pedro, the Port of Los Angeles and the Pacific Ocean. A really neat place.

The Vista is a restored old movie theater in Los Feliz. They did a really good job with the restoration, and it is beautiful to look at and the seats are quite roomy. On the downside, the sound is way too loud and parking is impossible around there. If you live near there, you might just want to walk or take the bus. Also, on opening weekends, the lines for tickets get extremely long. But it is cool; when they showed the remastered A Hard Day's Night there, it was the one time I didn't mind the volume being cranked.

Grauman's Chinese Theatre turns a night of filmgoing into a real event. The Chinese motiff, with dragons and ornate decorations, adds a whole other dimension to the movie experience. It truly is larger than life, so it's best to see a fantastic movie there. I saw the first Lord of the Rings there, and the atmosphere of the place really helped me get into the film.
