Rimsky's is one of my favorite cafés in Portland, and the environment has much to do with its appeal.
The desserts and drinks are standard coffee-house fare, but the atmosphere is unparalleled. Most weekends there can be a bit of a wait, but in my opinion it is well worth it for the live music (often classical) and interesting co-coffeehouse inhabitants.
When friends from out of town visit, Rimsky's is often one of the first places I take them -- for me, it sums up so much of what I love about Portland.

Who ever thought a delicatessen could be so much fun?
Elephants recently moved to a larger location in Northwest Portland (with more parking!). There is now room to eat your meal, inside or out (weather permitting), and to enjoy the atmosphere of the deli while you do so.
The food is as amazing as ever, and there seems to be a greater selection of items (something for every taste). Most importantly, though, Elephant's retains its fun and light-hearted atmosphere. If you find yourself in Northwest Portland looking for a place to eat (or simply to snack on all sorts of goodies), Elephant's is a wonderful option whether you want to eat in or take your food to go.

I first encountered Moonstruck Chocolates a couple of years ago in Portland, OR, and was pleasantly surprised when they opened up in Chicago. Their chocolate truffles are absolutely amazing, and not only that, but there is a aesthetic to both the chocolate and the atmosphere of the café that is absolutely enticing.
In addition to their fabulous truffles (which, might I add, make excellent gifts), Moonstruck also has excellent desserts and coffees. If you are in the area, stop by and try a truffle or two (or three, or four ...). If you love chocolate, you will love Moonstruck.

The Snail is one of my favorite restaurants in Hyde Park. The food is delicious, and relatively inexpensive. Just about everything on the menu is delicious, and if you enjoy sweeter items, the lemon chicken is quite tasty.
Another appeal of the Snail is its cozy atmosphere and friendly service. You are sure to find students, other university members, and neighborhood locals packed into the restaurant on weekends, but the restaurant maintains an intimate feel.

Fox & Obel, a high-end grocery and cafe, is located in the Streeterville neighborhood of Chicago, close the Navy Pier. I consistently encounter excellent service and great produce and meats at the store, and I am particularly impressed by their fish quality.
The bakery is also excellent, and you will find yourself tempted by all the wonderful breads, pastries, and other goodies they make fresh.
If you are in the area and don't need groceries, but instead are interested in a quick meal, the cafe in the back of the store is pretty quick and delicious. The prices for cafe items also seem pretty reasonable.
