Whenever I go to Cal's I can be assured that their friendly and attentive staff will have the answers I need. You are greeted as soon as you enter the shop and directed to the right department. It seems like the employees are experts in their field and they always have what I am looking for. So far I have only purchased a lens, high-end camera bag, and some lens covers there, but am very happy with everything. They can be a little pricy when it comes to equipment, but I don't mind paying a little extra for the service and their no hassle returns policy. They also develop film and retouch old photos there.

I found One World when I was looking for a place to purchase charcoal and flavored tobacco for my husband's hookah. The had some off-brand charcoals, which we discovered when we used them, tasted like fireworks. The flavored tobacco was not the best quality either. I think they cater mostly to the "herb smoker" crowd as they had a number of glass and metal pipes, etc. If all you smoke is a hooka now and then, I'd find someplace else to buy your supplies.

If you make beaded jewelry and you haven't discovered the Bead Source yet, you truly are missing out! Their selection is vastly superior to anything you would find at a store such as Michael's. They have the largest, most diverse selection of beads I have seen in L.A. They also have very unique beads, such as one-of-a-kind and hand made beads from all over the world. The prices vary depending on what type of bead they are, but are generally reasonable. They also sell large quantities at wholesale price.

Stan's was a place I hit up multiple times a week when I was working and going to school in Westwood. They always have the freshest, tastiest doughnuts around (and this was pre-Krispy Creme!). My favorites were the doughnut holes (with sprinkles) and the pretzel shapped ones (I don't think they tasted any better than the other ones, I just liked the shape!). Their prices are very reasonable as well.

I've seen many shows at the Troubadour over the years - everything from country to punk and had an enjoyable evening every time. The tickets are usually pretty reasonable (I've seen some shows there for $12) and the events are all ages (that can be either good or bad depending on what you're there to see!). I usually head up to the balcony to get the best view of the stage. They have bench seating up there and the whole venue is general admission. I've heard they also have a "loft" area for all access people but I've never been in there.

The first time I went to Domiano's was a 3am after a night of bars and clubs in Hollywood. That was quite possibly the best single slice of pizza I've had since homemade. Unlike NY style pizza, Domiano's makes it nice a thick. They also have a complete menu of other Italian dishes such as gnocci (which was also top notch). And the best part, they stay open until something like 4:30 am! They do delivery as well, so if you're in the area I would highly recommend it.

When you're done clubbing in Los Angeles and you're still somewhat sober, head over to Canter's from some good ol' slice of "greasy spoon" pie. Beyond the pie, the best thing about Canter's is just people watching or the waitresses! There are some waitresses that have been there for longer than I've been alive and they get to talking about "the old days", it's really quite a treat. Canter's is "old school" L.A., and you don't really see tourist types there, just those L.A. locals that know where to get a good piece of pie at 2am!

First, the drawbacks - it's usually crowded, and parking is $6. Other than those two things though, The Lucky Strikes Lanes is one of the hippest allies in L.A. And unlike most bowling allies, the food isn't half bad! A game will run you between $5 and $7 depending on what time you're there. Weekends are packed, so I found the best time to go is on a weekday if you can. Another stand-out feature of LSL is the art showcased on video screens at the end of each lane.

This was one of my fav hang outs when I lived in L.A. With tons of red vinyl, walls that look like lava rock and a definite tiki theme prevailing. It's like you've entered another little world. They have half price drink specials usually from 8:30 - 10pm. They have a tiny stage where lounge acts play. I saw Combustible Edison there once. The food is your typical lounge type fare, but the drinks are not bad at all. It's all about the ambience here.

Aaron's is where everyone who was anyone went to buy their used vinyl (records), indie music, top hits, etc. before Amoeba came to town. You can find the rare hard-to-get item, or the brand new hot CD. I recommend going and just diving into the bins as you might just come across some lost gem that you never thought you would ever see again! Many times I went there for a specific item and walked out with 5 other things. They also purchase used CDs, vinyl, etc. They don't give the best prices, but they do give a good amount of store credit. The only drawback is a lot of the employees have big time attitudes.
