Plum Tree Village in Roswell's historic district began with the remodeling of one home, which was built in the 1850s, and has expanded to include eight businesses. The buildings original architecture was influenced by the Queen Ann and Gothic Victorian styles, making this a great place for anyone who enjoys historic architecture. The shops include The Bilt-House (a Buckhead establishment), Metanoya Coffeehouse-Cafe, Plum Tree Salon, Plum Tree Yoga Center, SLM Studios/Gallery (Sandra Milton's Studio featuring her contemporary paintings and sculptures and visiting artists), Taylor Kinzel Gallery (bronze and metal sculpture and unique art jewelry), Uniquities (unique furnishings, oriental rugs, lamps, hand made pillows, etc.) and V.Originals (original home accessories). A great place to browse for a few hours.

Petland has registered and adopt-a-pet puppies and kittens, fresh and saltwater fish, a large selection of beautiful exotic birds and reptiles. They have little areas where you can interact with and get to know any pet you're interested in buying. The friendly sales associates are very helpful and have always been able to answer any questions we've had. Even if you're just looking for something to do with the kids, Petland is a great place to go.

When my son was going through his "Egypt phase," as so many boys do, it seems we went to the Carlos every week. The display of wonders of Ancient Egypt are fabulous but don't let that overshadow the other exhibits - the classical, African and Asian art galleries. Even the building is a gem.

When my nephew tried to start his own business, he choose Message On A Bottle as a way of doing some advertising. Message On A Bottle prints unique personalized labels and puts them on bottles of mountain spring water. My nephew handed them out at the ballgames his older brother coached. People loved them and he got a lot of business from it. Not only good for advertising your business, the bottled water can also be used as wedding favors or baby announcements.

Important places associated with Martin Luther King, Jr. and the American civil-rights movement line this half-mile stretch of Auburn Avenue - King's birth home and grave site, Ebenezer Baptist Church (where he worshiped and preached) and the Fire Station No. 6 Museum are the main historical attractions. Don't miss the visitor center, however. It offers spine-tingling exhibits, video displays and film presentations. Particularly poignant are eight life-sized statues of men and women, black and white, in a simulated Freedom March of the 1960s. You can stand among the figures and listen to the old spiritual songs. The experience is really quite mind boggling. You can take self-guided tours of all the buildings, except King's birth home, which requires preregistration at the visitor center. Tours usually fill up by noon so expect to wait several hours unless you sign up early. Your best bet is to sign up upon arriving and visit the other buildings in the meantime. The best times to visit are early on Sundays or on a weekday; October, November and December are the least busy months and summer is the busiest time of year.
