The first time I went to Chipotle's, it was to burn a coupon a friend had. First impressions...a little bit of modern industrial feel. Corrugated steel. Sealed plywood. Cool. Then you get to the front of the line to order. Hmmm...free range pork...interesting. I don't normally like pork much, but I'd like to try one that may have had a better than average life....
It's Delicious! Very moist. Yummy. The ingredients are fresh, the place is spotless, the servers are friendly. I gotta come back here again.
At the end of the day I'm waiting on my commuting partner and pondering the "free range" pork. Is it really "free range"? Does it just have access to a door for a few minutes a day? Gotta be a website....
WOW!!! Now I really love this place! Yes, the free range pork is really free range and that's actually why it's so moist and yummy. The pigs are outdoors (or in deeply bedded pens) so they build up more of a fat layer against the elements. I'm not one for eating fat and I didn't taste (or worse yet, feel) any when eating my burrito. It was just moist and especially tasty!
Cool place, good food, and a company worth cheering about (they also have a page with pictures of all the office dogs at their business office). I did write and ask "why not free range chicken and beef?" The response was that at the moment, there is not enough of a supply to stock all their restaurants year 'round, but they're working on it!

For us sushi buffs, our cravings tend to hit the old wallet pretty hard. But, if you aren't craving a specific sushi treat, just need a general fix, this is a great place to go! Ther are usually 12-16 to choose from, all fresh, some actual fish, lol. Don't forget the wasabi and pickled ginger...mmmm ginger....
If you like to taste your wasabi, I would recommend getting a scoop of it and using a soup or desert bowl to mix it with the soy sauce you'll find on your table. They have a pre-mixed version, but it's weak at best. They have numerous delicious dishes besides the sushi, so go there hungry and enjoy the many treats!

This Chili's is in front of a Home Depot. The parking can be a little difficult if you want to actually get next to the building. Weekend evenings you can expect a wait. It's a great choice, though, for a good meal in Bastrop, especially if you're not an "adventurous" type and don't want to take a chance with the non-franchised restaurants in town.

They have suprisingly good fish, and sometimes the steak is excellent, but sometimes it's full of grisle and fat, and much less enjoyable to eat. They have "all you can eat" steak night (it changes on occasion, so call and check first -- it's been on Thursday nights), which is usually worth while, and comes with potatoes, salad, and Texas toast. There's no non-smoking section, so if you're allergic, come early in the evening.

Most of the food is good here. The weekday specials are great (go Friday for their meatloaf, yum!). The chili is canned Wolf Brand, so steer clear of that. They went completely non-smoking a year or two ago (it's a small, single room, so for those of us that are allergic, this was a momentous occasion). They are wireless hot-spot, so you can sit and stay a while, but if you're a coffee buff, be forewarned that it's what you'd expect in a little town cafe - folger's or some such.

This is the original. It's a big place and usually has a good crowd. I (and most locals, apparently) prefer Meyer's down the road for a couple of reasons. First of all, Southside (unless it's changed in the last couple of years) only serves "four-leggeds". That is to say, no chicken or turkey, just cow and pig. Second, they charge you extra for each slice of bread. Maybe Meyer's has me spoiled.

This is an older Sonic and the building is a little run down which leaves you wondering about the cleanliness in there.... If you go, stay in your car.

The original "Elgin Hot Sausage" is served on the other end of town at Southside Market, but most Elgin residents prefer Meyer's. They have fantastic smoked turkey breast. Their beef sausage and pork garlic sausage are delicious. The brisket....depends on the day. If you order the lean brisket, you may be pleased or disappointed. Ask to have a look at it before they cut it. Sometimes it is lean, sometimes it is fatty. It tastes the same, I suppose, but I just can't stand the texture.
I order meat by the pound (not by the plate or sandwich). It's a much better deal. It comes with pickles, onions, and white bread (if you want them) and you can make your own wrap or sandwich. There are plenty of tables - mostly wooden "picnic table" type, but heavier duty; antique farm implements and signs on the walls (plus a few stuffed critters); and a TV in the side room if you need to keep an eye on the game. The sauce is sweet and there's an extra "hot" sauce bottle with some kind of oily mixture that you can add to it as well. My husband uses it, but I don't think that it has enough flavor to make it worth bothering with.
The place is clean and well lighted, and the folks are friendly. It can get mighty crowded on the weekend and you may have a good wait to get to the meat counter, but you can always read the newspaper clippings that are framed and hung on the walls.
