Oh, did I mention, they're open 24 hours?

OK, I live in Elgin. Half the restaurants are BBQ's. So why go to Rudy's? I love their brisket. I love their sauce. I hate fat.

Their trimmed brisket IS SOOO GOOD! Always. Perfectly consistent. And their peppery sauce...mmmm.
This place is great fun (if you aren't into white tablecloths...or any tablecloths for that matter).
Stand in line and pick your meats, your sides, your drinks. Eat indoors or out at a picnic table. Smile. Enjoy yourself. Bring your friends. Talk to the people down the table that you've never met.
Fun, friendly, delicious.

OK, I'm not romantic. I'll admit it. It's a great place for a date but I've been married 13 years, so that's not much of a draw. Why go? Well, if I'm in that part of town, it's usually during the day (not evening). If it's a nice day out, it's great to be able to sit outside (with your dog even! yes, they are a "dog friendly" restaurant (on the patio only, of course)) and enjoy good service and bit of garlic (did I mention it's Italian?).
The pasta, the pizza, the service, it's all good!

It's a little fancier than most Austin restaurants (OK, that's not saying a lot), but still laid back. The food is delicious. It is a vegetarian restaurant, but a lot of us non-veggies go because the food is just that good. It's a delight to be able to get spicy Tex-Mex that's as good for you as it is tasteful.
Oh, and if you're a chocolate lover, save room for dessert!

OK, if you go for a 2 for 1 night, plan on reading the chronicle. Front to back. Guaranteed wait, but it's a fun place, good food, and a long time Austin classic.

First of all, I went on a Sunday. Bad choice. I asked at the counter (when I finally got to it) and they confirmed that yes, I came at the worst (busiest) time of the week. Well, it's popular for a reason anyway.
I ordered the asparagus eggs benedict. I really like eggs benedict and don't get a chance to have it very often. It came with home style (chunks) potatoes and black beans. It was a bit bland. Both the eggs benedict and the potatoes. Bummer.
My husband got a different dish (not a breakfast) and chose the mashers (mashed potatoes) for his side item. I snuck a forkful of the mashers and those alone are worth going back for!
One of the reasons I wanted to go there was that I was looking for a place to help socialize my rescued pooch and I'd heard that they are "dog friendly" (on the outside patio only, of course). I'd also heard that they'd stopped being "dog friendly" due to complaints.
When we were there, it was BUSY, but a couple of people arrived with dogs and a server brought water bowls out for them. Nice.
I'll have to go try it again and post an update. The desserts looked "to die for", so maybe I'll bring the dog (not on Sunday) and kick back with some coffee and dessert.

This is the original Kerbey Lane Cafe. It's an Austin atmosphere (don't bring out of towners that are afraid of body piercings). It's laid back. The food is really good. The veggie tacos are delicious (and I'm not a vegetarian). It's not necessarily fast, so go when you're not pressed for time.

;-)
The queso alone is worth coming in for (no meat). Really, really good!
It ain't fancy. Some of the stuff nailed to the walls may not have been dusted in this decade. But the food is great, and the atmosphere is Austin.

The atmosphere is interesting. The place is dripping in plants (I don't know that I'd take your aunt and uncle from the Midwest here to impress them). These guys were making smoothies when smoothies weren't cool (and they're still the best).
The desserts....well, I tried one once. I don't bother to save room any more.

This is a good, quick (well, if you aren't in the middle of the lunch rush) place to get a yummy veggie sandwich. The food is good. The desserts are great. If you are out and about, stop in for a cup of joe and a slice of espresso cheesecake (my favorite), mag 7 (chocolate chocolate cake with chunks of cheesecake), or the delicious carrot cake.
Watch out for the lady at the counter (the owner's mother). She can have a bit of a bark, but it just adds to the charm of the place.
