The Original Pantry Cafe, located prominently on Figueroa, deserves almost landmark status in downtown Los Angeles. It's been around forever and is never closed. Because it's open 24/7, it's always a consistently reliable source of typical American diner food. The breakfast menu is definitely a popular attraction, and portions are big enough to fully satisfy munchies any time of the day.

El Cholo is an extremely popular Mexican food joint. After starting off with hot chips and salsa, traditional entrees range from fajitas to combination platters. Their margaritas are definitely popular as well.
The overall setting is just very warm and welcoming, great for families and large groups. Prices go fairly high for Mexican food in Los Angeles, but it's clean, and doesn't matter quite so much if you have a USC student ID on a weekday, which gives you 50% off your entree.

Focus started off very strong a few years ago because it was one of the first of the more classy plazas in the area. The bottom floor sells beauty products at a decent price, while upper levels sell fairly high-end clothing and tons of the typical Asian stuffed animals, accessories, etc. I personally think it's a good place to browse and windowshop, but there are plenty of better-priced places on Valley Blvd nowadays.

There are a lot of complaints about Hawaii Supermaket being too dirty. It's definitely not bad by Asian standards, however, and I don't know a better place to get fresh produce at a cheap price. During the summer, watermelon, mangoes in boxes, white peach, white nectarine, and oranges are incredibly cheap and absolutely delicious, and it's common to find rare Asian fruits like starfruit, lychees, pomegranates, and durian. All sorts of Asian foods and cookware are available at Hawaii Mkt as well.

On the corner of New and Valley, JR used to be a very popular place for lunch and dinner, with the typical hk-american style dishes like steaks and fried rice and noodles. A popular special was a special dish with half of a succulent lobster sauteed in green onion and ginger, served with a gravy-like sauce on chewy e-fu noodles. They just remodeled, changed ownership, and reopened, however, and management has got a lof of work to do...

I always go for the lunch combination specials, with any choice of 2 items: sashimi, california roll, teriyaki chicken, teriyaki beef, tempura, and many more. The fish is fresh, and the food is decently-priced. Last time I was there on a weekend, free dessert included a cute, small scoop of strawberry ice cream.

Monday thru Saturday, lunch special, which includes soup or salad and an entree, starts at just $4.50, which is just about unheard of these days. Commonly-ordered dishes include the Thai Purple BBQ Chicken, with a good amount of tender dark and white meat seasoned and bbq-ed to perfection and a sweet-and-sour honey sauce for dipping. Pad Thai is always a safe bet, considering the popular Pad Thai Tuesdays where a good-sized order with shrimp and chicken is just 3.99.

Bistango, located at the end of USC's Greek Row, is a popular spot for college students, whose choices vary from traditional pastas to salads, meats, and sandwiches. Free, freshly-baked bread is always a plus, and tastes best when dipped in the provided oil and vinegar. For those in a hurry, there's takeout, which is just as good as sit-in.
