Similar to the Bibelot stores, in the quality and uniqueness of it's gift selection, the Bibelot really shines in the variety of books, cds & other fun items they carry. The Bibelot is a great place to find a gift for anyone with discerning, intelligent or charming taste. They carry fun household items, as well as hard to find tongue in cheek books. Their selection of hard to find french toiletries is also of note.

If you have a thing for Middle Eastern food, you should check out the Holy Land Deli on Broadway in NE Minneapolis.
They have a daily buffet that is more than reasonably priced, and the food is authentic, tasty & exotic, with a good selection of delicacies.
Adjacent to the deli section is a grocery market where you can find just about anything you need to recreate the dishes at home, including a ton of spices, interesting canned goods & the best olive bar I've ever seen.
Definitely try one of their dozen varieties of hummos, their delicious pita chips or any of their oilves (from the olive bar). Holy Land is a fun cultural establishment bringing diversity & great food to NE Minne.

French Meadow bakery looks so inviting as you drive by, that everyone should stop in at least once. When you get inside, you'll find that the visual appeal of F.M. is carried over from their huge sign & tables outside to the charm inside.
Though the place is so aesthetically eyepopping, unfortunately the pastries are good, but not great. A little typical in their selection and taste, not outstanding, and like most high-end bakeries, typically high priced.
Their lunch menu is diverse, however, with great sandwiches and wraps.
The parking can be a pain, just due to location. But if you're looking for somewhere to hang out, look cool while reading a book, and not interested in being too culinarily challenged, F.M. is a good spot.

Figlio's is located in Calhoun Square, in Uptown, and offers a mix of pastas, salads & sandwiches that are traditional Nouveau Italian cuisine. Is that an oxymoron to say traditional nouveau??
Anyways, the atmosphere is great, with a very trendy, hip young crowd, and lot's of fun people watching onto Lake Street. The look inside is very elegant, yet casual, very American bistro, and it has a lot of great nooks to eat in.
Mon-Fri from 4-7 pm they have a great happy hour, with $2 drinks & mini appetizers. Their regular menu is moderately priced & the food is worth every cent.
As far as the cuisine goes, it's great. Not superb, but great. They have a ton of fun appetizers, with great fusion twists to select from. Their Baby Field Greens salad with cayenne pecans and dried cherries is DELICIOUS, and has inspired me to try it at home. My friend Nick swears by their Figlio BLT, saying the bacon is not overly salty, and perfectly cooked for being super thick. I have had their pizzas, which are ovenfired and delicious, and their Steak sandwich, which was a little tough, but delicious nonetheless.
Figlio's should DEFINITELY be checked out for happy hour - with only a $2 committment all around, why not. You'll probably find you love it, and add it to your repertoire of great places to eat in the Twin Cities!

A Baker's Wife pastry shop, on the corner of 28th Ave S & 42nd St in South Minneapolis, is by far, the best bakery in town.
This tiny gem, hidden in a mostly residential neighborhood, offers rich & tasty treats, with friendly service at affordable prices. Unlike other bakeries, which can give you one or the other, A Bakers Wife provides you with fresh, scrumptious, well executed pastries & breads without charging a ton. Their average pastry is only $1.28, for a treat that is more than double the size of something you'd find elsewhere.
Moreover, the quality of their baked goods is without fault. Especially noteworthy are their blueberry turnovers, their sour cherry cream cheese danishes, their caramel sticky buns & cinnamon rolls & their American tea cakes. All of these pastries are delightfully tasteful, about the size of Paul Bunyan's palm & fresh daily . The ingredients they use must be amazing, or the recipes flawless. Maybe they make these in small batches. I don't know - I just know this, they're loads better than anything you've tasted before.
Also worth mentioning are their donuts - both plain & cinnamon sugar. They're like fair style mini donuts, but without the grease. They are light years lighter & less greasy, but stil have that delicous, crispy on the outside, buttery on the inside taste.
Also worth mentioning is their customer service. The guy who owns the place is hilariously great. Every time I go in he's got a HUGE smile on his face, and I think he's truly happy to be there, baking and serving the neighborhood.
If you happen to be by the neighborhood, you should stop in and pick up a pastry - you'll never go anywhere else again.

Farrells Ice Cream Parlor is the stuff that childhood dreams are made of. I remember eating ice cream (sharing a banana split actually) with Joey Slaughter, at Farrells, when I was about 8.
Going back last year, I realized not much has changed. The decor is still the same - like a candy striper decorated the place, all red & white and very The Music Man -esque.
The ice cream selections haven't changed much either. You can still get The Trough. WOW!
If you were raised on Farrells then it's worth the trip back, if only to relive a bit of your childhood again.

I must say, for a student facility, they ROCK.
I will never go anywhere else for a hair color or cut again. And it's not just the super reasonable prices that make me rave about the Aveda Institute. It's the attention to detail, the communication skills of the staff & the meticulous & thorough job that they do!
I think that because the staff is all students, and their grades are depending on how good they do, the services are perfect! I have never been dissapointed with their color, and have found it richly hued, leaving my hair saturated, plump & glossy.
The cuts are always perfect, adding style & movement and precisely matched to my hair's texture.
The wait is long, once you get there (expect to be there at least 3-4 hours), and the facilities aren't spa quality or upscale. It is a school, and you have to remember that when you sit next to a plastic mannequin head with perm rollers in it. But if you are picky about getting what you ask for and receiving knowledgable input, check out the Aveda Institute.
Oh, did I mention the prices are fabulous too? About $40 for full color services, and only $12 for a cut.

Though the beauty services at this spa are truly lacking, the massage's at the Red Door Spa are amazing. Some of the best I've had.
I had the aromatherapy 90 minute massage at this salon, and the massage therapist was wonderful!! She mixed a blend of essential oils just to my specifications, and was not overly chatty. She used strong force when needed and was gentle in more tender spots, which displayed a knowledge of her clientielle and profession.
I've had manicures & hair color services at this salon, and I must say I was not impressed. The manicure was rushed, not properly executed, I was charged for a premier service, when what I received clearly wasn't. The manicurist didn't seem to know what she was doing, and I wondered if she was filling in for someone or what?
The hair coloring services were lackluster, though reasonably priced.
All in all, go there for the massages, and skip the rest. But do give the waiting room, complete with ivory leather sectional & faux fur throw a try, as it is relaxing pre & post massage.

I've had a bit of experience with this shop this summer, not as the bride, but as the bridesmaid. And here's what The Wedding Shoppe has going for them:
-An amazing selection of dresses
-A charming locale & store
-A great selection of accessories, from candle holders to shoes, for the bride & bridal party
-A wilingness to work with the "last minute bride", including the ability to rush order dresses
-Reasonable prices, compared to other Twin Cities bridal stores (the same dress at another store was $40 more!)
But here's what I found lacking
-tact in the salespeople... I'm not exactly a stick insect, and when we were trying on dresses, the sales person commented on my weight telling me "well, this dress will look good even on you honey", and then later saying "well, you may be heavy, but at least you're proportionate, that will help in alterations & sizing".
If you're looking for a shop that will serve you a nice cup of coffee, or give you bottled water, where the staff will charm you (even insincerely), and where the attitude is more contemporary then 1950's, this isn't the place for you.
BUT, if you need a wedding dress shop that is flexible, timely and has a great selection, then The Wedding Shoppe will work for you.
Just a tip though - their alterations department is STEEP! You're better off going elsewhere for your alterations.. AND, in the most recent wedding I was in, where we ordered the Bridesmaids dresses from there, ALL the dresses (all six of them) came in disproportionately too large. This meant that all the dresses needed altering. I'm no conspiracy theorist, but I do happen to believe that they purposely order the dresses way too large to ensure they need altering. Just a thought.

GTI Roseville 4 is Hiliarious! First of all, let me say
IT'S THE CHEAP SEATS - WHAT DO YOU EXPECT?
That being said, if you don't mind falling on your rear on a slew of broken seats, getting said rear covered in last week's pop & gunk, and then sitting with your knees pressed to your chest (that's if you can find an unbroken seat), check out the GTI.
Tuesdays are $1.00 movies, the rest of the time it's $2.00. Usually the movies are just out of the regular theaters, but pre-video release. They have snacks, but I've only ever had the Icees. And just because you get in cheap doesn't mean the food is.
GTI is great when you realized that you missed something in theater, and want to still catch it on the (relatively) big screen. Otherwise, if you're wanting a quality experience, stick to the Mall.
