This shop (which opened long after my youth) is very reminessent of 'head' shops I used to frequent back in the 60's and 70's.
Their selection of clothes, posters, shoes, music, inscense...everything you can imagine is GINORMOUS! Their staff is super friendly and I just cannot say enough good things about this store. Their selection is very diverse and ecclectic and it just must be seen to be believed. I highly reccomend Exchange Factor over places like Factor Five and Purple Haze.

Being a long-standing member of the "Counter Culture", I have visited Purple Haze both by myself and with my daughter (thought that would add to my "cool" factor and give me "street cred". Didn't work).
They do body piercing and sell all kinds of "water pipes" (ahem), and stickers and stuff like that, but I would really have to reccomend Exchange Factor on Rivers Avenue over Purple Haze. SEe my review on Exchange Factor, but Purple Haze seems like they're trying REALLY hard and just not succeeding. Go to Exchange Factor which has a larger selection, much more courteous staff (they don't treat old fogies like me like garbage!) and just better selection of stuff.

I looove Stardust Skate Center. I used to take my daughter there when she was younger and wasn't old enough to get into clubs. Then, even when she was old enough to go 'clubbing', she and her friends still prefered to start the evening off with a good skate before they went dancing (she told me nothing good occured at the clubs until after 10pm).
They have adult night for those who don't want to be considered 'geriatric' by the 16-and-younger crowds, and they sell a wide variety of skates and skate products. Very good place to take your kids for fun!

My wonderful daughter bought me a wonderful Scarab bracelet from here many years ago, which I still have.
Living in Charleston my whole life, Croghan's is THE place to go when you want to buy jewelery that will impress...it's the type of place where heirlooms are bought.
They're not a budget jewelry store by any means, and the only thing that prevents me from giving them 5 stars is that their sales staff can be rather..."snooty", I suppose, if you go into the store and don't look like you make at least $200k a year.
I had to take my bracelet in for repair and as I was waiting on service, they (the staff) were giving me looks out the corner of their eyes like I was going to rip the place off. Once they saw that I indeed had a peice of their jewelry and wanted a repair (to the tune of $150), they were more than happy to treat me like a customer instead of a potential criminal.
They should learn to not judge a book by its cover, and to not treat customers rudely based upon non "SOB" dress-style or looks

I've gone to Gerald's Tires since I've had a car (and that's been a looong time). Their mechanics and staff are THE friendliest and most professional I've ever seen.
They don't give you the run-around and will not tell you that you need new tires if you don't.
They're very courteous and treat their customers with respect (Something that's so rare these days). THey have numerous locations throughout the lowcountry and seem to be opening new offices all the time. Check the phone book for the location that's closest to you. You WILL not be disappointed in this bonafide Charleston Institution of Friendliness

I've used them for my alpha-numeric paging service for many years. The prices are decent and the staff is courteous and polite.
The only complaint I have is that the operators sometimes aren't the best spellers in the world, but I have asked that they put special notes on my account to specifically ask for spellings of names and addresses, which is kind of important for my business. They have a variety of services for your business needs.

I don't blame her. THey make the best benne wafers in Charleston and they're not terribly expensive.
They're located downtown in The Market so parking during the tourist season (read: year round) can be a little sketchy, but trust me--it's worth the circling around. They dont' just have benne wafers, but candied pecans and walnuts and all other kinds of wonderful sweets!

Jay and Ray are the guys you want to see if you need auto repairs that are honest and they don't jack up prices to make themselves a big fat pocket. Honestly!
They'll tell you what your problem is and tell you honestly how much it will cost to fix it. I've never been treated so courtesously by a mechanic in my life. They don't treat us females like we're dumb and don't know a wheel from an engine.

I don't mind the drive from Charleston to Columbia to go to this zoo. I've been to better Zoo's, of course, but for South Carolina this isn't too bad.
The only bad thing is that it seems that in all the years I've been going there (which are many years) it seems like all of the exhibits are never open all at the same time, which can be a bummer if you're planning on making a day trip out of it.
I like the rainforest exhibit, though. It rains in there and you can see alot of different wildlife.

There are many statues and other peices of artwork as well as amazing horticultural and wildlife as well.
Plan to spend a day there just walking around and viewing things. I found the sculpture to be amazing. It helps if you have a basic knowledge of greek & roman mythology because that's what alot of the artwork is based off of
