We live very near Thai One On, and it's become our default Thai place. My daughter thinks they have the best calamari in town, and I really like some of their salads. The interior has a slightly over-the-top feel, but does makes you forget you're on Lake City Way. They also deliver! We still hit Siam on Broadway when we want something more transcendent, but we're grateful that Thai One On is nearby.

I've always been impressed with the great variety of produce at Rising Sun. It would be nice if there were more organics, but it's an excellent place to buy items that aren't heavily sprayed anyway (onions, broccoli, bananas in particular). Best of all, I often walk away with a couple of big bags for under $10. I make a point of stopping here on the way to Whole Foods to see what I can pick up on the cheap.

We rent from this Enterprise office when we need to, mostly because it's close to our house, but the staff at this North Seattle office is also just very friendly and helpful. I've called and gotten a car with 15 minutes' notice at an excellent rate. If you're in N. Seattle and don't want to go downtown to pick up a car, I highly recommend Enterprise.

My experience over eight years of going here is that the sandwiches are good, the pies are great, and the cakes are *awful.* We got pies to go for our wedding rehearsal dinner (a barbecue) and they were just unbelievable--big, sweet berries, flaky crust, everything you ever wanted in a pie. So a year or two later, I went there to get my husband's 39th birthday cake, a carrot cake. It was beautifully decorated, looked scrumptious--and was oily and tasteless. For some reason, they don't (or didn't, anyway) use cream cheese frosting on their carrot cakes (I mean, what other kind is there???). We ate a few bites of it and tossed the rest. Yet I can't totally hold it against them--it's a nice place to hang if you're at Green Lake. Just get your birthday cakes somewhere else.

I really, really like the coffee at Zoka, but the tables are always all taken at the one in Tangletown. Imagine my delight when they opened a new one even closer to my house. UZ has the same terrific coffee, excellent baristas (they do foam art like you wouldn't believe), and fab sandwiches/bakery items. The wi-fi is free, and no one hassles you if you stay a long time. It's definitely one of my go-to places when I want to give a visitor a taste of Seattle culture.

I've been a fan of Kabul for 10 years. I think I've tried everything on the menu, but am especially fond of their badenjan borani (sauteed eggplant, served with or without meat) and qorma i-sabzi (rice with spinach and scallions, also served with or without meat--try it with lamb). Everything tastes rich and hearty, like it's been simmering on the back of the stove for hours, but nothing is overly filling. For dessert, I recommend the firni (custard with rosewater and cardamom) and a small pot of cardamom tea. The atmosphere is intimate and warm--a great "date" restaurant.

I had them build some steps at a rental house I own. They did a very neat, professional job, and I'm glad I used them even though it was fairly pricey. They came when they said they would, they were done when they said they would be, and they cleaned up their mess without me having to make a bunch of phone calls. The owner is indeed very friendly, and has a nice portfolio. If the job had been bigger, I might have shopped around more for a better price, but as it is, I'm quite satisfied.

I switched to Dr. Murphy when I was pregnant because I wanted a dentist I could take the whole family to. He is a fairly conservative dentist--by which I mean he doesn't recommend a lot of drastic work or purely cosmetic-type treatments. This was a welcome change from my previous dentist, who kept trying to file down my teeth (which looked fine, by the way) without my permission. Dr. Murphy is a chatty, friendly guy, has a very positive focus, and is gentle and approving with children. His receptionists, assistants and hygienists are all terrific and very professional. My daughter loves going to the dentist--can't ask for better than that.

This is where we end up when it's raining, when our 6-year-old is cranky, and when we're just hungry as heck and have 8 pm theater tickets. It's one of Seattle's great unheralded restaurants, in my opinion -- the menu and wine list are varied and interesting, they'll make substitutions readily, they have nice inexpensive side dishes that work well for kids, and the waitstaff is knowledgeable and incredibly friendly. Seafood dishes are always delicious here. Ask to start with the roasted head of garlic!

I have been having my facials and brow waxing/tinting here for the last couple of years, and recently started getting my hair cut and colored here also. Michelle is terrific--I can't believe how good my brows look when she is finished with them. Nicole has only done my hair once, but did a great job and I will be returning to her soon. One thing I really like is that there isn't a lot of pointless waiting around--they're ready for you when you arrive and get you in and out fast. I also love the fact that it's an Aveda salon and they have the full range of Aveda products, plus a lot of very pretty jewelry and accessories. Best of all, parking is EASY and FREE, not $8-10 like it is downtown! And the neighborhood is fun--when you're done with your services, you can go next door for sushi or across the street for coffee.
