My 70 year-old parents have made the Watertown their primary place to stay when they come from out of town to visit our family. While I think it's really classified as a "Business Hotel", it borders on "Boutique". The building is newly constructed with great modern touches. The rooms are well insulated (for sound) and super clean. My folks love the simple breakfast in the lounge - fresh fruit, cereals, etc.. and they offer wine in the evening. The staff bake chocolate chip cookies all afternoon. Free bikes are available as well - you're only two blocks from the Burke Gilman trail. It's definately the best hotel near the UW.
Overall, it's the amenities and little touches that add up at the Watertown. Well worth it.

There are two main reasons we go to Portage Bay Cafe - the early hours on the weekend (8am) and the pancake bar. Get there early, this place fills up quickly. Order a pancake (buttermilk or rice flour) and start glopping on the toppings - you could feed a family with just one trip to the bar!
Their other brunch items are usually pretty good, including some pretty inventive omlette specials. We haven't had the courage to try the "Banana's Foster challah french toast with myers rum caramel sauce and sauteed bananas".

Suzy Myers and Marge Mansfield have been guiding the births of thousands of children in the Seattle area over the last 30 years. If you are considering a non-hospital birth scenario, you should definately meet them. They are awesome, well connected and sensitive to your decisions. While Columbia City might be a little out of the way, they also work out of the Community Birthing Center in Montlake.
With Swedish and other powerful business interests attempting to put the kybosh on midwifery (hey - they can make loads off of planned c-sections), a home or birth center birth is still an option.

We really like Dr. David Springer at Wallingford Pediatrics. He was one of the most progressive doctors we interviewed prior to our first child. He will suggest naturopathic remedies and definately won't overmedicate or over innoculate. He is very respectful of our mixed ethnicity. His practice extends into his own MPH research as well. Our midwives love him too, since he's got an incredibly realistic and open viewpoint.
The office also has a lactation consultant.
David was recently rewarded for his best practices:

We've been dining at Mandalay for 6 years or so and Erik and Janny have made a unique place. The dishes have generally been consistent, flavorful and spicy - better than most of the local Malaysian and Thai restaurants. We recommend the mussles or spiced lamb appetizers and the Cape Chicken and Malay Lamb curries. However, the changes over the last 3 years have been difficult - painful - for us. We understand that they are under some great competitive pressure, but their move from individualized plates to family style, with rice as a separate item, has confused us. We haven't even tried their wonderful soup since it stopped being served as a part of the standard set meal. As a result of these changes the servers have taken to longer explanations of "how we've changed".
Ah well - my rant. Those who haven't tried Mandalay probably wouldn't even notice and will be blown away by the food.
Beware of the spice with kids. Go for mild.

I'm not an expert when it comes to Indian food, but we've found that Taste of India on Roosevelt is consistently good and definately worth a try. It can be very popular as well, with people waiting outside the door. The management is very attentive and the service is surprising (maybe even overstaffed). This is our favorite Indian take-out and dine-in. Parking can be difficult and you may need to cross the street or find a side street.

The mole poblano is piquant, bitter and nutty. It's complex, maybe even an acquired taste, but it's wonderful.
The restaurant is family run and laid back - don't expect attentive service and don't ask too many questions. The owner is nice when they get to know you. They have one old high chair and no boosters.

Do you ever get a sinking feeling when you walk into Toys 'R' Us? Then you should visit Top Ten Toys in Greenwood. It's an awesome store full of educational, classic and unique toys and games. It's one of the few really good independent toy stores around and the selection is great. You won't find much high technology or violent stuff here.

The Meridian Playground is a fun place to take the kids. There's enough room to play organized games and the equipment is all pretty new. Great details with sculptures and quotations from well known childrens books (check out the lifesize bronze Carl dog).
Always consider bringing a second set of clothes in the summer. A water spout above the sandbox will be on and kids will get soaked and muddy within the first five minutes.
Like most of the neighborhood parks, SOME dog owners violate the law and use it as an off-leash area (there's a sanctioned off-leash area in Woodland Park). Give 'em a good tongue lashing if you have the chance.
