One of the great street foods in NYC is the Jamaican patty--in multiple forms. My preference is vegetable (and Christie's has an interesting contrast to some others in the city), but others like chicken and beef. There's also a good array of Jamaican entrees and cakes and drinks. This is a little triangle of a place on Flatbush, and there's often a line, but it moves rapidly. Prices are a little better than comparable places in Manhattan.

The former "Long Island Historical Society" (remember, Brooklyn was once part of Long Island) has recently gotten a makeover, and the building outside and inside is enormously appealing. The Historical Society sponsors a good array of lectures, tours, and other special events, and sells several good books and guides to Brooklyn. The changing exhibits are well worth a visit, especially if you're a member (as I am). However, I should point out that the actual amount of exhibit space isn't so large, so some of the exhibits are a bit small.

The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is more than an orchestral hall--it's a hydra-headed entity with a hall for music/opera/theater productions, an art house cinema (BAM Rose Cinema), and an associated theater a block away (BAM Harvey). The movies are a good deal--the place is comfortable, usually not too crowded, and quite clean. BAM is well-located just a block from the Atlantic Avenue/Pacific Street transit hub.

Ozzie's occupies an old pharmacy (check out the intact cabinets) at the corner of Lincoln Place and 7th Avenue in the northern section of Park Slope. It's got a friendly ambiance, a good selection of coffee and accompaniments, and art on the walls--a good neighborhood place. Sometimes it seems like half of Park Slope is slacking there. If you're heading to or from the Q/B trains on 7th or the 2/3 trains at Grand Army Plaza, Ozzie's is there for you.

That Venetian palace on 8th Avenue in Park Slope? It's the Montauk Club, named for the Montauk Indians, and once the club of Brooklyn's elite, at the turn of the century. Now the club only controls the first two floors of the building; the others are sold/rented out. There's less reason to take food/drink at an urban club these days, so membership has diminished. While I am not a member myself, I've enjoyed visiting, on days when the club is open for lectures or exhibitions, and I've eaten there with a friend who's a member. And the place is available to be rented out for parties and functions. Worth a visit--it's a nice trip into old Brooklyn.

One of the coolest--if not the quietest--times to visit the museum is the first Saturday of every month, when admission is free from 5-11 pm. There's an eclectic lineup of gallery talks, films, and music--some of the activities may require you to wait on line for a free ticket. There's food and drink, and an enormous cross-section of Brooklynites. It's a great opportunity to pop through the museum, as well, and remind yourself of your favorite galleries.

The Williamsburg Art & Historical Center was once the Kings County Savings Bank, built in 1868. For the last decade, it's been a nonprofit gallery, and the building seems to be in perpetual renovation. Don't expect air conditioning in summer or full heat in winter, but do expect an eclectic lineup of shows every six weeks in season. The web site could use some updating, but my understanding is that, after further renovations to the building, shows will resume in January 2006. It's well worth a visit--make sure you look at the medallions on the back wall that honor the artisans who worked on this building, with its unusual Second Empire-style mansard roof. One of the pioneers on the now-emerged restaurant strip of Fifth Avenue in Park Slope. A well-chosen, if not extensive menu, based on available market ingredients. A decently-priced wine list, with an option for carafes of house white or house red. Tables are close together, but people are friendly. No reservations, so come early, or you'll wait at the wine bar next door. I had heard they didn't take credit cards a while back, but they do now.

Some people will only eat ice cream, but there are lots of people--remember "Sex and the City"--who want the sensation of ice cream without all the calories. So what if the flavor of this soft serve frozen dessert dissipates quickly--at least you get the sensation of licking something that reminds you of chocolate ice cream. The company has recently been battling with city officials about its calorie claims; there's recently been a settlement. See http://www.tastidlite.com/pages/heres_the_real_scoop.pdf

Maggie Moo's has a cheerful ambiance and friendly staff--the ice cream is plenty rich, including the fresh-packed pints to go in the freezer case. It's a great location on the main drag of Park Slope, 7th Avenue, and while it has a bit of an emerging-franchise feel, it's a worthwhile resource for ice cream lovers and also grownups wanting to organize parties for their kids.
