Bierkraft seems to have every exotic beer imaginable in its cases, and you can buy them one at a time to test them out. A nice way to 'splurge' without spending too much money. On the other side of the store, there's a case with some tremendous gourmet chocolates (including some made in Brooklyn). They're not cheap, but buy a dozen, have them wrapped nicely, and you have a very, very nice gift. The store also has cheeses, other gourmet foods, etc., and periodic tastings.

Uncle Louie G's is a great place to visit on a warm day. The ice cream is fine, but I'm partial to the lower-calorie ices, which come in a multitude of flavors, contain actual mix-ins (Oreos, chocolate chips, etc.) and have cutesy fun names. What I especially like is that you can get two flavors in a small ices, so you don't have to choose just one/

OK, I don't order from Fresh Direct a lot (some friends do), but the couple of times I've done it, the prices have been decent, the quality of fresh food good if not great, and the variety of products excellent. But what truly shines with Fresh Direct is their delivery policy: they deliver within a two-hour window of opportunity! Given experiences with various utilities, we're used to waiting around for four hours or more. Fresh Direct cuts that in half. If only others would follow them...

Ok, Key Food is a local chain of supermarkets, so the food/presentation is reasonably standard--though there are some sections in this store that are clearly geared to the neighborhood. But the great thing about shopping here is the soundtrack--soul, 60s pop, etc. I don't know who's in charge, nor do I know where they get it from, but the music seems to be enjoyed by a lot of the customers.

The Transit Museum is one of the city's less-noticed gems. I always tell people from out of town to take a look. There's a great history of the transit system, including maps, photos, and fixtures, but go downstairs to the decommissioned subway station and see the enormous variety of old cars, including ones that were used on the elevated lines. Wicker seats! We've come a long way. There are also kid-friendly features, including an opportunity to sit in the cab of a (cut-off) bus.

Franny's is a huge hit, and I enjoyed the one meal I had there--fresh ingredients, well prepared. But it was quite expensive, if you have an appetizer and dessert and wine with your pizza, and the pizza itself is fairly skimpy. Of course you're paying for the quality, but I also walked away still hungry. If you bring a full wallet you won't be disappointed, but remember, pizza isn't cheap.

A lot of people don't know that there are three public library systems in NYC: Brooklyn, Queens, and New York (which has branches in Manhattan, Staten Island, and the Bronx). Brooklyn's central library has the largest collection in Brooklyn (though it's also good to check online to see if the book's available) and the most events. The second floor meeting room hosts a rich array of readings, meetings, and music. The construction outside in the plaza will yield a new, much superior underground auditorium. Make sure to check out the central first floor space for a rotating series of art exhibits, as well as the second floor display cases for more art.

The Brooklyn Lyceum is in a former bath house on a once forlorn corner of 4th Avenue--the western border of Park Slope, which is steadily gentrifying. I've watched the Lyceum evolve into two performace spaces, and a branch of Schnack is coming soon. The lineup is quite diverse: theater, movies, music, dance parties, community events. The building is still being renovated, including its facade, and the programming is still evolving. But it's good to see the Lyceum has not been converted into luxury apartments or retail and will remain an important local and area resource. See http://www.gowanus.com

Chango usually isn't that crowded, and they bring a nice heaping basket of free chips. The burrito comes with rice and beans, so you can really eat your meal of the day here. I've also been for Happy Hour--the drinks are good, and the chips are free, but it does tend to get mobbed. I wouldn't call it authentic Mexican, but that's not what they're going for. A decent value, for sure.

I've become a Mozzarelli's fanatic. Their slogan is "Wholesome Italian Foods," and they do serve entrees, calzones, etc. But I love pizza, and I've been looking for a healthier pizza I liked. The whole wheat crust is decent, but the multi-grain pizza is fantastic--there really is a difference when you eat a better crust and have some lower-fat cheese... the pizza "rush" is less, and the energy value is delivered more steadily. I just hope they franchise and/or others start offering this kind of pizza. Note that the pizza approaches $3 a slice, but I figure my health is well worth it.
