Once upon a time Brooklyn was full of breweries, then they left, and in the 90s the Brooklyn Brewery emerged. You can visit for happy hour on Friday night or during Saturday day, and on Saturday there are free afternoon tours on the hour, ending with free samples. To get beer, you buy tokens from the cashier near the entrance, then get on line. (It's a good idea to tip the beer bartender.) Once I was with a group and we wanted to go on the tour, but it had been canceled--so they gave us each two free tokens! It's a great way to sample the variety of beers. Just make sure you don't take the beer outside--you could get busted.

Only in Williamsburg? I dunno, but this is the great record store/performance space combo that is hard to find elsewhere. There's a great selection of music, with knowledgeable staff, and a back room/bar/coffeeshop space that regularly hosts bands. It's not like a little stage in some kind of chain record store, it's almost like an indie nightclub. Very cool. A good place to visit (I do) after a stop at the Brooklyn Brewery for happy hour (Fri or Sat) and you need to satisfy your jones for music.

Galapagos is one of the mainstays of Williamsburg's open-late North Sixth Street. There's a pool at the entrance, a couple of bars, and a couple of performance spaces. I've heard rock bands and gone to readings--it's an unpretentious, friendly enough place. You can even watch from the street. Just down the block is the rock club North Six, and the 24-hour restaurant Anytime is in the other direction.

OK, so Whole Foods hasn't arrived yet, and it's "Park Slope" location is gonna be 3rd Avenue, which is actually Gowanus, so the much smaller Union Market has stepped into that niche. It's just down the block from the venerable Park Slope Food Coop, which has better prices and more selection, but the market seems busy enough, which suggests that there are lots of people who aren't coop members, and maybe even coop members don't always want to brave the lines. The quality is good and the prices are, as expected, not cheap, but you're not in the bodega that once occupied the space either.

Hunan Delight is nothing fancy, but they're consistently fast, good, and inexpensive. The lunch special is a bargain, especially the takeout/delivery version (portions seem a little bigger). You can get brown rice as an option for no extra charge. There's a whole menu of vegetarian options, with mock meat. It's probably healthier--if a little less authentic--than a lot of places in Chinatown.

Arecibo (named for a town in Puerto Rico) is a long-established business on Fifth Avenue in Park Slope, long before gentrification. The car service is prompt, and the prices are a little better than some others in the area. (Always get a price quote first.) I wouldn't say the cars are the latest model--you get what you pay for--but if you're not taking a long trip or you don't have a delicate grandma in your party, Arecibo's worth consideration.

I've used Northside several times and while it's certainly not the fanciest car service, it's completely reliable. You can walk into the office on Bedford Avenue and they'll have a car in a minute, or you can call them from any location--even standing on the street-and they'll be there quick. Just make sure, as with all car services, to get a price quote before the car arrives.

On an obscure side street in Williamsburg, in the back of the driveway, there's a garden shed that is the... Holland Tunnel Gallery. (The owner is Dutch, and an artist who's lived there for years.) I've been stopping by periodically for about five years, they get a real diversity of shows--sometimes dozens of small pieces, sometimes a site specific sculpture. And a few years ago, they actually reproduced the gallery, in toto, in a Brooklyn-in-Florida exhibit at an art museum down there. It's only open weekends, and closed July/August.

This is part of a local chain of Jamaican fast food place, with patties (excellent portable food), dinners, cakes, drinks, and more. The decor is carnival-bright and the turnover pretty fast. I like this place because I'm a regular and the afternoon guy always knows my order. I'm partial to the vegetable patties, but there's chicken, beef, soya, and more--I also like the jerk chicken one. It's a good way to experience Caribbean culture without leaving the sidewalks of Gotham.

I'm not about to review Pratt as an educational institution, since I don't go there, but the campus is worth a visit. There's a great array of outdoor sculpture on the grounds and attached to the walls of buildings (my favorite: the "shovel mandala" made out of garden shovels). Several of the early buildings (late 19th century, early 20th) are classics. There are periodic art shows by the talented students. Oh, and ask one about the 'rumor' about the movie that was filmed at the Pratt library.
