Big on atmosphere

Friday, September 16, 2005
If you want a mellow, relatively quiet place for a hearty breakfast, or a dark, cozy corner with a large L-shaped booth for late night group hangs, this is a great place. And if you want to take your dad or grandma out for a simplicity-inspired blast from the past, it's perfect. Astro is a Silver Lake fixture and a great example of "Googie Architecture." It harkens back to another time, for sure. The food won't win any awards, but the omelettes are hearty (and huge), and although I'm a vegetarian, I hear the burgers are pretty decent. Prices are a little high for what you get, but then again, most of these retro diners are doing that these days. I guess you pay for the ambience!
