I was in NYC over the Thanksgiving Holiday and was staying with a friend from the Upper Bronx. He took me out to eat at Coogan's up in Washington Heights...let me tell you I was not disappointed!
For dinner that Friday night I opted for the Shepherd's Pie...a very tasty meat and potatoes kind of dish. They serve it to you nice and hot. I had washed that down with a glass of a microbrew they had which definitely hit the spot. The price wasn't bad as well as it cost $9.95...
Next day for an encore we went back for their brunch...we both had the big plate of eggs, sausage, pancakes, etc etc etc for $11.95. Coffee was seperate but was worth it.
A definite find in the heart of NY for sure!!

I was in Hyde Park at the University of Chicago for an event this evening and was looking for a place to eat...I really didn't feel like having Italian (i.e. Giordano's or Leona's both of which are in the area) and I was looking for a place close to the Border's in the area. Lo and behold I found Valois Cafeteria which looked cozy enough.
I parked and went in and decided upon a Roast Beef special....for $5.75 I got a couple generous slices of roast beef along with mashed potato and a choice of vegetable (I had corn on the cob) along with 2 big pieces of cornbread....YUM!! it was very good and satisfied my appetite. With a cup of coffee it came to $7.20 but was well worth it....if ever in the area I am definitely going to go to this place again.

Chicago is very well known for its Italian cuisine..including the deep dish pizzas and the Italian Beef sandwiches with sweet peppers and dipped. Well at Ricobene's, they have Breaded Steak Sandwich that can be definitely classified as a great Italian sandwich.
Ricobene's has several locations in the Chciago area and are famous not only for their pizzas but also for their Breaded Steak Sandwiches. Generally the sandwiches come on Italian bread smothered in tomato sauce along with peppers as an option (hot or sweet). For an extra you can also get cheese on this sandwich. Oh yeah they have the regular sized sandwich along with a jumbo steak sandwich as well.
So for a great night out and for some good food, try Ricobene's. They also have great desserts as well including Italian Ice!

Recently I was out and about and was looking for something different for dinner....well I had a taste for a Zel's Roast Beef and where I was going....lo and behold there was one. Zel's is a small chain of roast beef restaurants in Northwest Indiana. Unfortunately the one that was closest to where I live closed since last year so I had to been to one in awhile.
Anyway I ordered a simple roast beef sandwich with pickles and mozzarella with fries and a drink. It came out to a little over $7 but was worth every penny. Their roast beef has a great taste to it and coupled with the roll and the cheese it makes a great sandwich. In addition, they had my favorite kind of pickles, the small bread and butter chips and they had them with the ketchup and relish and all so I was able to get some extra there.
So if you're in NW Indiana and have a taste for roast beef but don't want to go to Arby's, check out Zel's. They also have great homemade milkshakes you can get here as well.

A friend of mine wanted to go out for lunch today and wanted a decent burger. We didn't feel like driving too far so didn't hit Culver's but instead decided to go to Schoop's Burgers, a local chain to the South Suburbs of Chicago and NW Indiana.
Their burgers are great....my friend got a double cheeseburger and onion rings with a shake and I got a Swiss Mushroom burger with fries and a Mr Pibb. I believe they use steakburgers too.
The service, however, left a lot to be desired. Two different waitresses waited on us....one took the order while the other gave us the food and drinks. Then we had to remind them of the drinks we ordered. FInally they screwed up with the checks. We had asked for seperate checks but one showed up...turned out to be the wrong one but in the end we did get the checks.
I don't think I'll be going back to this location anytime soon because of the service. I might check out their other locations for sure. Their prices could be a bit lower too.

OK....you're looking for a place to get takeout seafood...Red Lobster isn't going to cut it nor are the neighborhood bars....so what do you do? Go like I go to Calumet Fisheries, a neighborhood fish house which has been there for quite a number of years.
You can either get your fish fried to go or you can pick up fresh (and smoked as well) and make it yourself. They also feature their own smoke house.
The meals are excellent...a few pieces of fish, fries, cole slaw, and their homemade cocktail sauce in either hot or mild. Certain fish only come a la carte such as smelt. Recent additions include crab cakes that you can get individually or as a meal.
Their prices are pretty reasonably too....for $10 you can get a good meal to go and in most cases you don't have to wait all that long (even when the store is very crowded).
This is a place that is very much recommended by this user!!

If you are looking for a great place to eat and crave Polish cuisine, check out Mabenka's restaurant.
Recently I went there with a friend as this was the first time in awhile that I had dined at this location. We both ordered the Polish Special which included a breaded veal cutlet, dumplings, a link of smoked sausage, and sauerkraut....all were very tasty. In addition to the main course, you also got a soup (and/or salad), bread, and if you got the dinner you also got a dessert.
For just over $9 apiece, this was well worth getting. Only thing to watch out is if you get soft drinks, there are no free refills like there are most places. This is in a good location too as its close to Ford City Shopping Mall near 79th and Cicero.

I was at Salerno's recently for a surprise birthday party. I had been there once before about 5 years ago and really liked their food. Well I definitely was not disappointed this time.
This time I decided to get a mixture of meat and cheese Tortellini in red sauce....very generous portions for the price! In addition, they give you a choice of soup or salad and bread with the parmesan/oil mixture....yummy!!
So if you're looking for a fairly reasonably priced local Italian restaurant and are west of the Chicago Loop, you might want to give this place a try.

I've been actually going into the Sprint Stores recently to pay my cell phone bill. Last month I was working downtown Chicago so went to a location in that area. This month I went to the closest Sprint Store which is in Lansing, Illinois.
I went in to pay my bill and couldn't help but notice the help all standing around doing nothing. When I said I wanted to pay my bill, the guy (tymaine or something like that) gave me a look like why was I bugging him. I did get the bill paid but I don't think I'll be going back to this Sprint Store to pay my cell phone bills in the near future. They need to learn proper Customer Service for everyone.

I come from a Polish Family and although we are pretty Americanized, we do like the fresh Polish Sausage (not smoked like Ekrich or Scott Petersen) for holiday time. In the past few years we've had problems getting it or finding the sausage with the closest taste to homemade. We may have found it at this place, Joe and Franks.
Joe and Franks is a small deli in Bridgeview off of 87th and Ridgeland and very Polish. Not only do they have an extensive array of meats but they have other Polish delacacies too such as pierogis and globacki and if you look hard enough they do sell fresh chicken noodle soup and borscht (red and white). Among the other groceries they also have a good selection of imported Polish products such as chocolates and cookies.
So if you're looking for something homemade and fresh (sausage and sauerkraut rock!) check this place out...it was very crowded the day I went in there but it was well worth the wait!
