Pancakes and breakfast skillets are popular choices at this always-busy place. The casual decor, bench-style booth seats and big tables encourage folks to tuck in, although the crowds on weekends can set a hectic pace. Nice touches include an insulated coffee pitcher at every table, keeping refills within easy reach. Fully cooked whole rotisserie chicken is available for takeout.

Stanley's front room is a bar with several booths, tall tables with old chrome and leather bar stools, satellite- and cable-fed TVs and a jukebox. The adjacent dining room is an abrupt leap into the family den, decorated with photos, quilts, bowling trophies and children's drawings. This is a popular family restaurant, with a special kids' menu. On Saturday and Sunday there's an all-you-can-eat brunch buffet for $10.95.

Moderately priced Italian food served in a faux Italian country-house setting, a bit incongruous in the 900 N. Michigan building, but nevertheless a convenient spot for a meal after shopping. In addition to pizzas, salads and pasta dishes, look for seasonally influenced daily specials. I've been here about 3 times now and twice I've gotten the daily special. I think that is a good choice to pick.

This place is surprisingly upscale for a neighborhood tavern off the beaten track. The rooms' historic feel (the building is over a century old) was enhanced by a 1979 renovation. The kitchen features standard bar appetizers, salads, sandwiches and an entree list tailored to meat and potato lovers. The bar serves a full range of liquors and a modest selection of bottled and draft beers. The laid-back surroundings make the saloon a popular destination for dates and groups of friends. For better or worse, televisions positioned in the bar, dining room and two-table pool room ensure access to sporting events no matter where you are.

Seasonal seafood is flown in daily from the Atlantic, the Gulf and the Pacific Coast to this popular River North spot. Many of the restaurant's fish and seafood suppliers are pictured on the walls of Shaw's Oyster Bar (formerly Blue Crab Lounge), a New Orleans-themed oyster bar with old blues and torch recordings on the sound system. The Bar seats about 120; the main dining room, pricier and more formal, seats 250. Special attractions include "Oyster Hour" 4:30-6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday; winemaker dinners pairing seafood with wines; and the weeklong "Royster with the Oyster" festival in October.

The Hunt Club is the kind of all-purpose restaurant/bar -- with high-visibility outdoor seating -- that makes Division Street and its environs attractive to young people. The spot offers bars on three different levels, pool tables downstairs, cigars and an unshocking menu of salads, pizza, sandwiches and pasta. For watching sports, including boxing matches, Big Ten games and other special events broadcast via satellite, there are 16 television monitors and one big screen.

Cite has sweeping 360-degree skyline views from the 70th floor of Lake Point Tower. Michael Dean Hazen (ex-Rushmore and Phil and Lou's and most recently, Philadelphia's Continental Mid-Town) returned to Chicago mid-May as executive chef of Cite. The former French-inspired menu is now contemporary American with French influences, and Hazen will be changing the menu frequently to incorporate seasonal items. Look for appetizer choices like pan-roasted foie gras with chocolate, cherries and coffee aroma, and entrees like a surf, turf and "earth" combo of filet mignon, butter poached Maine lobster and truffled mashed potatoes or a pan-seared king salmon with pink shrimp succotash, sweet corn essence and basil oil. Entrée prices are now $10-$20 lower than on the former menu (there are still a la carte and prix fixe options). As for service, expect the same fine-dining attention, but the formal "dome" covered plate service and flaming tableside desserts are no more.

Although it's from the folks behind Basil Leaf Cafe, the cute Italian spot across the street, owner Sean Tehrani tells us this spot will not have a pasta focus. The grocery will feature organic products, premium olive oils and vinegars, about 30 artisan and farmstead cheeses, 80 international wines with a price range of $12-$130, Belgian beers (with some organic offerings), house-baked breads, and a variety of olives and antipasti. Other edibles will include salads, made-to-order sandwiches and individual-sized thin-crust pizzas with gourmet toppings like potatoes and rosemary. There will also be heat-and-eat entrees like venison in port wine sauce with mushrooms (other off-the-beaten-path game offerings will include buffalo, ostrich and pheasant). Delivery will begin a few weeks after the doors open. Wine tastings are slated to begin this fall.

The menu changes seasonally, but favorites such as the breakfast burrito (cilantro-jalapeno tortilla filled with guacamole and scrambled eggs) and the Oreo cookie flapjacks remain on the menu. Made-to-order eggs and omelets are always available for the breakfast traditionalist. The lunch menu offers several sandwiches, like a maple and mustard roasted pork loin and the signature crab club. Salad offerings include a baby spinach, golden beet and duck confit, along with classics like the Caesar and Cobb.

This place is a great place to hang out before and after Cubs games. It is right outside of Wrigley on Addison St. They do have great weekday specials, but unfortunately not on Cubs game days. No surprise there though. Nevertheless they play good and LOUD music with lots of beers on tap to choose from.
