Chomp Sushi wasn't what I had expected at all, but it turned out to be a nice surprise. Saturday night came with a loud, boisterous, fun atmosphere--very different from the quiet, elegant sushi restaurants I was used to! We came for the sushi and were seated next to one of the teppanyaki grills, which was great fun to watch while we ate. The chef threw rice balls at everyone's mouth to get them to catch them and did various other tricks as well. Next time we'll be seated at the grill!!

If you visit Portland, this is one stop you HAVE to make. When I first arrived here, one of the first places I went to was Powell's. If you love books, this is your Disneyland. I was speechless when I walked in. I literally spent all day here, hours just wandering around and browsing before walking out with an armful of books at closing--the first of many such trips. Bliss.

Red Light has always had that special just worn in enough, extra soft, kitschy t-shirt from another era that I needed (and sometimes more than just one!) at a decent price. The store is laid out well too, so that you don't have to spend time digging through bottomless bins. They've also got plenty of 70's jeans and filmy vintage dresses. The staff has that uber-cool attitude, but they are willing to help.

This place is very cute, although they have to struggle to accommadate large parties. The Thai iced tea is amazing and a must try. Get the appetizer combo and share it, because it is very tasty, with just enough of everything to tease and satisfy. I love their pad thai as well. It's a great place to stop into during the chill winter to warm up with a little curry.

The couches are plentiful and comfy, there's chess tables and board games near the front, and endless nooks and crannies to tuck yourself away in with a book or friend and a cup of java. Coffee Time has the coziest atmosphere in Portland, hands down. There's seating outside, although it can be hidden by the cloud of clove smoke. This is NW, so the crowd is very very emo/hipster with the occasional yuppie. All around wonderful.

I don't mind being left alone when I go by myself, but it can be annoying when you're with a group. The food is good, the booths are nice, and the bartender makes a mean Lemon Drop. If you like to be let alone while you dine without a server popping by every five minutes, this is the place for you.

Zookeeper is a fun place to go even if you're not searching for that special someone to be your new pet.
They have a variety of animals, everything from snakes to a sloth, genets to gerbils. They have been known to purchase animals as well, so if you're a breeder or maybe that hamster just had a litter, inquire at the front.
Ask the pirate-ish guy about bird-eating spiders, and he may have quite a tale to share with you.

Half Price has helped me pay my bills many a time by buying books, CDs, and DVDs from me. Although they can be stingy sometimes with their offers, they rarely turned down anything I brought. They also have had several books I was looking for on their shelves that weren't in other stores. The staff is nice, but it's hard for them to find a specific book without a computer inventory. The store is also very cluttered, which suits me but has bothered several people I've come with.

Barton Creek is the higher class mall of Austin with stores like Nordstrom, Coach, and Pottery Barn. The layout is simple, so it's hard to get lost, unlike the Killeen mall. Without a doubt, this is the place to go at Christmastime, because you can't beat the selection or the variety of stores. It's also a Simon Mall, so the Simon gift cards will work at any store here. The only thing it lacks is a place to get decent coffee.
