Without a doubt one of my favorite places in New Haven, the Book Bank is pure good will. How many of us have books we've never read just sitting on our shelves collecting dust? Well, the books given to the bank will go to those who will actually use the information.
I admire the desire to learn simply for learning's sake and I am such a fan of this program, which encourages the free passage of knowledge. It's in Robin Hood style, only no one loses.
Not only all of the above exists, but they also offer free tutoring. So, if you have some time, help a kid and sign up!

I am writing this nearly purely for the cafe. With it's in-bookstore seating, coffee (yum) and offerings of splenda and fat-free half-and-half (lower cal faves), this is a great place to either take a break from work with a magazine and drink, or to hole up to write a paper.
But as far as the bookstore goes, it loses when it comes to the "Yale" part. It seems that the addition of any insignia causes the price to increase 3-fold. So, stay for the chillness factor, but don't furnish your apartment with its offerings.

it's nothing fancy, but it doesn't claim to be. it's open all day and night and everything they've got is laid out in front. you can copy, fax, get prints made and pick up course packets. nowadays, their paper-and-pen system is nearly archaic, but you gotta love the people and place for doing a great job in an efficient and effective manner. it can be a bit crowded at times but I've never seen mistakes or unfriendliness.

it's a great meeting place for "coffee." populated mostly with undergrad yalies in the evening who meet for said and who utilize the space for studying. during the day filled with a wider variety of yalies, including the grads (who might normally be at ol' koffee no. 1), and plenty of local businesspersons who come for the decently priced variety of foodstuff. coffee is good but not great, but there's amazing tea and plenty of alternatives to both. good owners, hip staff and fast service. just wish they played better music.
