This place presumably has summer rollerblading events, but I haven't seen any. In winter, though, it's the favourite place for all the university students AND kids from the community, so yes, it can get pretty crowded once in a while. Colder winter evenings, though, are less popular, so it's even possible to be the only person on the rink! The staff are nice and won't close the rink on you. There's skates for rental, and you can sharpen your own for $5. At the beginning of the winter they also have "skate in your swimsuit" event. Amazingly, lots of people turn up for it! They look a bit cold, though :)

The reason I opened my account with PEFCU was that the ATMs of my previous bank - Bank One, also with a lot of local presence - were constantly out of order. One night, after trying 3 places, and not being able to use an ATM, I went over to PEFCU. They turned out to be quite a bit superior to other banks I used: I never had to wait more than 2 minutes in a line, their cashier's checks are free, and they serve free coffee to everyone who walks into their bank! So far (2 years) I haven't had any unreasonable charges, which is something that every other bank customer complains about. So, good place!

This is a really friendly and well-run place. They are very thorough in explaining what your animal needs and why, and very nice to pets all the time. Dog and cat reception rooms are separate, so that the pets don't freak out at the unfamiliar smells. There's a couple of live-in cats at the reception, very laid back and purry. They also provide boarding services and specialized food for pets. You can count on getting a reminder postcard when your next appointment is due.

It's the best winery I've seen - and I did serious touring of Napa and Sonoma valleys. You have to go, not least because they can't ship their wines inside or outside of Indiana (for legal reasons, it's something about agreements with other states, and buying extra grapes from Michigan). The wines tend to be on the sweet side, but Gewurtztraminer and Riesling are clear and subtle, and muscat is top-of-the-list. Tastings are free at all times, tours of the winery are too, the outdoor patios by the lake simply amazing, and they've got a good store of everything that goes with wine - fresh bread, cheeses, spreads... Just find a designated driver - you'll want to try more than you think.

I'm not kidding. I used to go to Vidal Sassoon's salon in Water Tower place in Chicago - and K J Nutt is better. Not to mention significantly cheaper (it's still $40 a haircut, and worth it). So, I switched, of course :) Be ready for serious questioning - as to which way you want your hair to fall after the haricut, etc. If you have a good idea of what you want, bring a picture; if not, it's probably even better, because everything I've seen them do only flatters their clients - they never do a cut just because. Great place. Make appointments in advance - they are known to be booked up for 2 weeks ahead...

The limo service goes from PMU to Indy airport. They will stop anywhere you ask to drop you off - the bus drivers are amazingly friendly, and they love students (treat them a bit like lost puppies, which is sometimes a good thing). The cost is $40 both ways, $23 one-way. They will take on pets and bycicles, but you'll have to pay for it. This shuttle goes every 2 hours, so whenever I flew into Indy, I could get out of the airport and on a bus within an hour, really. If you call them, they'll tell you when the next one is coming 'round. Great folks, overall.

It's really a flight schol, in conjunction with Purdue University aviation program; they do actually give pilot's license and all. But if you have never flown an aircraft, and want to know what you'll be spending the $4000 to $5000 on before you enroll in flight school, they offer a pretty neat intro lesson. You can choose the type of aircraft, and decide if you want to take someone with you (they can snap some pictures, but I'm told life in the back seat of a Cessna is pretty rough). You get an instructor who'll interact with traffic control and land the plane for you; everything else you can do on your own, if you want to - takeoff, picking direction, turns, etc. All you need is good weather. I had fun watching birds fly - from above them...

It's really difficult to classify this place - it's a kitchenwear store, with unique things all over, and they also have a state-of-the-art kitchen right in ther store, and they give regular classes there on various quisines. On top of that, they even offer "culinary" trips to Chicago to visit local markets and eateries. As you walk in, chances are they are cooking something, and great smells waft through the entire place. I have learnt so much just by browsing the store - about a gazillion of little useful devices for the kitchen! They also have condiments, teas, coffees, gourmet chocolate, and cookbooks. Ah, almost forgot - you can register for their cooking classes online. It's nice when a small local place has class and their own web-site!

Everything that can go wrong in a shoe repair place WILL go wrong here. First of all, their working hours in an empty concept - they are open only when they feel like it. They were late on the shoe repair (compared to their own estimate!) - and a WEEK late (thank goodness I am used to doing things in advance). They never called to let me know when the shoes were ready - I ended up calling them 3 times. When I went in, the "repair" was horrible - the strap for my high-heel sandals sewn on upside-down, the clasp on the inside... They didn't notice it until I showed it to them, and they said - well, if you need them soon, take them now, and bring it back for repair... As if I was late on picking up the order!!! I told them I wanted the shoe in WEARABLE CONDITION. They fixed it and billed me like nothing wrong happened. When I asked if they sincerely thought that being late, re-doing the work, and ruining the straps with five seams every which way cost as much as a normal job, they looked at me like I was from another planet. Well, I don't have time to teach them to do their work, and I'm not going back.

I've only really used this place to fix the tires on my bike, and I love it. You're in and out in 10 minutes flat, and it costs $6 - beats doing anything to your tires on your own! The store is pretty good, though - tons of biking, camping, rollerblading and sports equipments, various clothing and nutrition for outdoorsy people, and no stuck-up attitude or inflated prices, as compared to large chains. Still need to go back to get those rollerblading brakes - don't know any other place that carries those!
