This is a very convenient large Asian supermarket, located right near the 74th Street Jackson Heights subway hub. They have a variety of Asian (and some non-Asian) groceries. I love that it's pan-Asian, catering to the various ethnic groups living there, and I can get whatever I need. The meats are very fresh, often better than the other nearby supermarkets, and the vegetables aren't bad either (haven't bought any fruits there, so I can't comment). It's a great place for picking up groceries on the way home!

This is a great addition to 37th Avenue in Jackson Heights! Inner Peace sells all types of things that make perfect distinctive gifts, from aromatic candles to journals to ceramics, which also would make lovely accents in your own home. I love stopping in if I’m doing other shopping in the area, and it’s a great store for browsing since you never know what you might find.

Essa bagels have the perfect bagel--soft and chewy on the inside, but firm/crunchy outside. They are also huge--I used to joke how they were like life preservers. People rave about H&H bagels, but Essa has them beat hands down! When the bagels come out of the oven, they are divine. They also sell cream cheese and other related foods, but the bagels are the highlights. On weekends, there can be a long line. I used to live in the area and could pop by for bagels. Now I live farther away, but I still love to make a special trip to Essa Bagel. They have 2 branches, one on 1st Ave and 21st, and another at 831 3rd Ave. Bagels are 70 cents each. I highly recommend an Essa Bagel!

I used to go to Stephanie for haircuts regularly. She started off as an associate (or something like that) so only charged $35. I was usually pleased but not wow'd--I could rely on a professional looking haircut, but on the conservative side. The salon itself is big and I never found it that relaxing--it almost feels factory-like, and sparsely decorated--minimalism but with less style. It's located in a hotel. Much of the clientele when I went was older. (I was a student so I went during the day hours). After Stephanie's prices went up to $50, I started going to Liquid, where for the same price, I could get a more stylish cut.

Liquid is always a great place to go for haircuts in Philadelphia. Many of my friends independently go. I've been twice, once to Jen who was recommended to me and very good. Their stylists are consistently good--the other time I went, I just randomly called and let them assign someone to me, and she was great. I paid $50 both times for a cut and dry. Both cuts lasted me a long time too (I have long straight hair). The staff is very friendly too.

Max's is a welcome addition to the Rittenhouse area, giving an excellent option for buying fruits and vegetables. It's not going to be as cheap as going to the Italian Market, but their produce is always fresh, and it makes it so much easier to eat healthy! They also have pre-cut fruit and ready to go salads, which are excellent options. I also think they recently extended their weekend hours. The staff is very friendly.

Yann has amazing cakes! They look great and taste delicious. We’ve bought their cakes to bring to gatherings, and they always elicit oohs and ahs. If you don’t have an occasion to buy a whole cake, they also sell mini pastries that are also very good. The prices are very good considering the high quality.

I have been to the Body Klinic twice for massages. Both were done by the same person (I forget her name), and were great–very relaxing! The space is relatively small (“intimate”), but clean and comfortable. I found the staff very friendly and unpretentious. If you go to their website, you can get info on any specials, deals or available coupons. http://www.thebodyklinic.com/

I used to go to Hair 2 Stay regularly for haircuts, and had haircuts by either Lisa or Susan, and was always very pleased. I moved away from New York, recently came back, and headed back for a haircut. Lisa still works there (I believe she’s the owner), and I was once again pleased with my haircut. The salon is now on the ground floor of Baxter Street (just north of Canal), and looks more hip, but the prices remain the same. I have long hair, and my cut and dry was $30. You won’t get some edgy trendy haircut, but I always get something consistently stylish and professional-looking, that lasts for awhile. I work in the non-profit community, where I can’t afford to spend big bucks on hair, but I need to look good, and Lisa helps me do that! As a note, Lisa is Thai, so I’m not sure how she’d do with curly hair, but her cuts work for me as I am Asian American and have very straight hair (some who are not familiar with this type of hair have trouble with giving me cuts that I can later style myself).

Ajisen serves noodles and sushi, and has great lunch specials where you can get a soda, tea, dumplings or California role for free. This is a good spot to go for lunch with other people, since you can sit down, have a good meal, and spend under $10. I am partial to their Sushi Lunch B special : ).
